The Hungarian coach said that half of his roster are players of around 20 and that they will get a chance here, as a preparation for the World Championship.
They are without top player Hanga and Kane is out as well, just like Toth and Ferencz. Last weekend, Hungary lost to Slovenia 64-84 (-20 in the second half), to the Czechs (without VEsely and Schilb) 51-85 (-18 in the second half). Coach Ivkovics rested Vojvoda in the second half and influenced the result. We can expect something similar today. Russia are without Sved and Karasev in Kazan. Sved not being there is a problem but not too big of a problem. Russia are one level above Hungary even without him (trashed Bosnia in qualifiers last season, beat Finland by 18 without him last year). Russian coach Bazarevic has a very good team at his disposal. Mozgov is there, as well as players from top RUssian clubs (Fridzon, Kulagin, Antonov, Voroncevič…). There are 14 players on the roster, the race for a few spots for EC is on and I believe they will do their best. Details

The arch rivals, Argentina and Brazil, will play the last group-stage game of the AmeriCup. Three teams from this tournament will advance to the WC, so winning a medal is necessary to qualify for the World Cup. Argentina have secured the semi-final, but not the top position, which is important because it means they would avoid Canada and face Puerto Rico. Brazil are also after the top position, which they get if they win here, and if Colombia lose to Venezuela (which isn't impossible) Brazil will be playing for the top position and semi-final (if they, and Colombia lose, Virgin islands will advance). Argentina are great on both ends, but they still haven't faced a team this good defensively at the tournament. Virgin Islands and Venezuela play fast and are offensively oriented, Argentina defeated Colombia 70-47 yesterday. Brazil are offensively limited, they are missing a few key scorers from last year's South-American championship. They have not scored here over 68 points, but their defense is at the right level. They limited Venezuela to 63, Virgin Islands 58, Colombia 47. Brazil are, with Canada, physically the strongest team here, they are aggressive, and I think Argentina will struggle in offense. Brazil won 73-57 at last year's South-American championship, they are weaker now and Argentina are the favorites. Also good options are under of overall points and counter-handicap, but I see the most wiggle room in Argentina's team under. Details

Greece didn't reach the Olympics last year which saw them hire a new coach. He said that his focus will be sticking to the tactical ideal, concentration and defense. Judging by Greece's game against Romania last night, they listened to him. They trashed Romania by 58, conceded 48 points, 21 in the first half and 27 in the second. Their aggressiveness was high throughout. Greece host the tournament in Patras, they said they really care about this. Messas has 16 players at his disposal. His team is powerful physically and great in defense. I daresay they are more powerful this summer as some players got back on the team. I don't think the UK will be anywhere near yesterday's numbers when they beat Ukraine easily and had shooting of over 50 percent. Their coach used all 15 players yesterday and will probably do the same today. Last year in EC qualifiers, the UK went over 70 every time we cannot compare Greece's defense with Macedonia, Hungary or Luxembourg's. The Brits stayed quite low against more defense-oriented opponents in all preparation games (hit 68 (41) and 71 (24) against the Netherlands, 61 (33) against the Germans).
Regardless of the fact this is a preparation game, I think Greece are clearly motivated and I expect Britain to struggle in offense against. I don't see them getting close to 70 points. Britain's first half under is a good option as well. Details

Australia are very disappointed for no longer being in the race for medals but I doubt they lost motivation. They nearly forced the mighty Russia into overtime yesterday and have not given up even when they were 14 points down. China, on the other hand, lost to Canada by just 3 but Canada controlled the final part of the game. The Chinese coach used just 6 players in QFs. They opened well but things were going downhill as the game advances. Australia use 10 players and that has to affect the result.
When preparing for this tournament, Australia beat Canada 69-56 and China 64-51. Last year at U17 WC Australia won 66-41. Australia now have 8 players from that tournament (all the key players included). China have just three but those three were by far the best ones at that championship. A big problem for China here is not being able to count on center Li who joined their A team and is the top player there. Details

This is basically the final for South Korea and New Zealand. If New Zealand beat Korea today, they will secure the World Championship. Korea can do the same if they win. New Zealand don't have a good offensive end but the defense is very good. They score 59,3 points on average, which is less than any other team. Their three-point percentage is 22 percent (also worst than any other team) and they shoot 36,1 percent from the floor. They averaged 59,3 points and allowed 58,3 in the group with China, Taipei and North Korea. They went at 112 with Taipei, who are most similar to Korea. South Korea were in a more competitive group with Japan and Australia and had 36,8 percent shooting. Some important players are clearly missed. They played at 126 against run and gun Japan and 132 against Australia. Last year in the Olympic qualifiers in the key game they lost to Belarus 39-56. This is another key game and I don't think it will fall apart. I think Korea with struggle with their opponents' toughness. At the same time, New Zealand cannot get their numbers significantly higher. Details

The Asian championship starts today in India. Australia, China and Japan stand out in quality in Division A. Japan started preparation for this tournament 2 months ago, at the USA and Europe tour, lost to strong European teams (Serbia, Spain), easily handled weak teams like Bulgaria and Macedonia. At the end of the preparation period, they faced Netherlands at home, and first won 72-45 and then 91-42 (Netherlands were not with their best team, but most of their players were in the Eurobasket qualifications last year): Philippines were in Division B at the Asian Championship two years ago, they lost to Malaysia, defeated Kazakhstan in overtime, North Korea by 1, and with a win over India (82-76) entered the Division A.
It is hard to find any comparable Japan's games in the past years, but they also faced India at that Asian Championship and defeated them 131-31. Japan are with a weaker roster (WNBA player Tokashiki is out), but the Philippines are as good as they were before (even though they had plans, they do not have any Americans on the team), which is best seen from the fact that they faced Malaysia in preparation for this tournament and lost 53-64, and Malaysia lost to Japanese University team Tohoku 51-71 a few days after that. Malaysia are not at the Asian Championship this year.
All in all, regardless of the fact that Japan have a weaker roster than last year at the Olympics and at the last Asian Championship, because of their quality, mentality and Philippine's lack of quality, I expect them to win convincingly. Details

Hungary came in 5th at U18 EC last year. Their only convincing defeat was to France who went on to win the championship (65-76). There are nine players from that EC here. All of the key players are there expect for 4th best scorer Studer. When preparing for the EC, Hungary beat France twice (61-55, 67-61) and lost to them once (61-65). That French team beat Australia and Canada later on. Hungary beat Turkey in preparation games 70-54, 79-37 and Croatia 76-59 away. They will be even better now since Torok joined the team.
Mexico learned that they will play this WC in late May as FIBA gave them a wildcard after suspending Brazil. Mexico finished the U18 American championship in spot 5 and lost to teams like Puerto Rico. The only good-quality opponents they met were Canada, to whom they lost 56-87 (31-37). They are now weaker than last year because they are without second and third top scorer and the best rebounder from the American championship. Mexico do not possess the necessary height or strength. Their quality won't be enough for them to stand up to any of the serious European teams. Details

Since Slovakia beat Ukraine, the Czechs can no longer reach spot in the group or the semis. They needed Slovakia and Germany to win. Also, they needed a 12-point win over Greece here. However, since the first requirement was not met, Greece are the team with higher motivation here. They can reach the semis if they win while in case of a defeat, they they will not go through.
Greece are more motivated and better-quality in my opinion. That might not be the case if the Czechs are complete here but they are not. Greece, on the other hand, have their key player to count on now, compared to the 2015 EC. No team was able to stop her until now and I don't think Czechs will either. They played well only against Ukraine here. Slovakia beat them by 6, Germany by 12. Greece beat Slovakia in overtime and lost to Germany by 2. They beat Ukraine by 7 yesterday but they were in control. It was obvious they were shifting attention here. Details

Turkish center at this Eurobasket is the American Quanitra Hollingsworth, WNBA player who is, looking at the physical strength, among 2-3 most dominant players at the tournament. She is 197 cm tall, she scored 15.7 on average here, with 11.3 rebounds (7.7 defensive, 3.7 offensive). In their games so far at the tournament she recorded: 14 points and 6 rebounds against Slovakia in a game that was quickly decided, so she had reduced playing time. In the second round against Italy she scored 29 points (10/20) and recorded 21 rebound in 37 minutes. That game is the most relevant one for today's game against Greece because the Italians are similar to the Greeks, short lineup without a center who could physically handle Hollingsworth. The American scored only 4 points with 7 rebounds in 13 minutes against Belarus in the second round, but that game was not relevant, because Turkey already secured the top spot before that game. Greece faced Serbia in the first round, their center Milovanovic scored 17 points with 8 rebound, and in the second round, their second center Lisec scored 15 points. In the 3rd round against France their centers Miyem and Clark played great /12 and 11 points), but France have a wider rotation in all positions, unlike Turkey. And finally, in the round of 16, against Russia, the Russian center Vadejeva scored 18 points and added 21 rebound in 35 minutes. Two years ago, at the European Championship, Sanders was Turkish center, and he was their best player against Greece (18 points and 12 rebounds). The option on the over of points by Hollingsworh is good, but I think that an even better option is the over on rebounds, because we can expect a tough game at lower numbers, and I see Hollingworth recording a double-digit number of rebounds. Russia opened the competition with a win over Latvia, who prefer a very fast paced basketball. The game finished at 130 points. Belgium, on the other hand, played Montenegro, who are not at the highest level defense-wise, at 130 points. I expect an even tougher meeting today. I doubt Belgium can hit 25 in one quarter again. Russia have one of the best defenses here. They beat Belgium 57-48 in a test game in Italy. Belgium were without their top offensive end player Meessman which means they will be better on both ends of the floor today. Looking at Russia's test games with defense-oriented teams comparable to Belgium, they have 65-40 with Italy, 59-58 and 69-52 against Turkey. They had a 15-point lead over Belgium by the end of first half. The game fell apart early on which I do not expect to happen today. Belgium lost the test game to Italy 62-68 and to Spain 59-59 and 48-87. Details

The Czechs host the EC and this is their final test game open for public. They haven't done too well in test games so far, having lost to China and Latvia, to Slovakia by 22. They beat the Slovaks 62-51 the next day. Their top player Vaughn is now on the team. Five players from the EC of two years ago are here plus Vaughn. They say that they want to finish the test period properly. I don't expect any experiments today since they play Croatia again tomorrow but that game will be closed for public.
Croatia won't be at Euro basket so they use this chance to try out some new players. They played 3 games so far and lost all of them easily (-27 against Slovenia, -11 to Hungary and -60 to Hungary).
They are without all of the key players. I would go with higher stake if The Czechs were in better form. Croatia cannot stand up to teams like this and apart from the handicap, the team over for the Czechs is a good option as well. Details

Macedonia beat Bulgaria yesterday 77-62 which is no surprise because the Bulgarians are just building a new team and don't have 6 players from last year. Macedonia says that the goal here is to get their game organized, to create connection between players because they played no intentional games in the past three years. They played qualifiers for EC in 2014 and lost 66-108 and 59-101 to Lithuania, 53-78 and 60-71 and Belgium 66-94 and 58-95. Even though it's been a while since, Macedonia have not changed.
Japan beat Bosnia easily yesterday. Their coach, well aware of their dominance, rested most key players. I have no doubt they will go full throttle again today and their top players will probably get more time on the floor. Macedonia rely too much on their American with the rest of the team mostly being inexperienced and young. The big difference in quality and the amount of time they spent together. Apart from the handicap, a good option is team over at Japan as well. They prefer fast transition and I don't think Macedonia are capable of slowing them down. Details

Japan and Bosnia's U20 teams are to open this Skopje tournament. Bosnia started preparing for the U20 EC a few days ago and immediately headed for Skopje after just one day together. They said that they believe this tournament will be very helpful and that the result won't be the priority. This Bosnian team has players who were at U20 EC and U18 EC last year. At U20 EC Divison A they won spot 11 and lost to Spain 49-93, to Portugal 47-67, 67-94. At U18 EC Division B, they won spot 3 last year in Sarajevo. Out of 15 players on the roster, 6 are back from U20 EC, 6 played the U18 EC.

Japan are in the middle of their European tour, getting ready for the upcoming Asian Championship gold from two years ago. Compared to the last year's Rio Olympics, 7 players are back now, among them their top player from the Asian Championship. There are 15 players on the team, all them A team players, most with experience at international level. Japan started preparing over a month ago, did a shorter tough in the States and played some games with WNBA teams. They also played two games in Spain, stood up to Canada and lost to Spain Details

Slovenia left a good impression in test matches. Their coach has the best women's basketball can offer. They won in the first test game in Hungary 77-64 (43-37 at HT). The day after, they won 81-79 (40-37) without all the key players. They first beat Turkey 63-40 (33-18) and three days later, beat Poland 77-50 (39-25). Coach Grgic says there is no place for euphoria and that they play the last test game home. They want to keep making progress. Last year in qualifiers for EC, Slovenia beat Lithuania by 21 (+16), Latvia by 18 (8). When it comes to Croatia, they are starting a new era. They have the new coach who mostly has young players on the team. Only 5 were in qualifiers last season. All the key players are gone. They have been together for only two weeks. This is a great opportunity for younger players to get a spot in A team. The plan is to allow the more experienced players to rest to be ready for the qualifiers for EC. On the one hand, we have Slovenia who are complete and played more together, while on the other, we have Croatia with a lot of new players and all the key names. I don't think they can stand up to the Slovenians. Total handicap is the best option but first half handicap and team handicap at Slovenia are good too. Details

Russia started this tournament with a convincing performance against Belgium, they had a 15 point lead by halftime, and later routinely finished the job, even though they had 0/9 three point shots. They relaxed in the final quarter so the win by 9 does not show the real situation. Selector Vasin did not keep any player on the court for longer than 20 minutes, Osipova, Cerepanova and Logunova were not on the record so we can expect them to play today, because they are not injured. We should point out that Russia and Belgium will be in the same group at the upcoming EC so that my be why they slowed down at the end.
This was the first friendly game for Russia this year, Hungary played three, and lost all three, and they had no chance against hosts Italy last night. It was proved once again that they are struggling in defense, they have a short bench and no width in the paint which is where the Russians are the strongest with Vadejeva, Vieru, Vidmer, Osipova, Cerepanova. All the Russian players are playing in top Russian teams (mostly UMMC and Dinamo Kursk), and all players showed up.
Hungary cannot count on their top player, WNBA point guard Vandersloot who is still in the USA, but should join them in june. In comparison to previous national team games, they cannot count on point guard Quigley any more, who carried the team in the past years, and important Vajda and Honti are also out. Hungary lost twice to Slovenia in this preparation period. When Slovenia were complete, Hungary lost by 13, and they lost when Slovenia were weakened the day after that. Last night they were down by 7 at halftime against Italy, they fell apart in the third quarter.
Hungary are clearly out of form, Russia are much better, and I think this will be an easy win for Russia. Handicap on the game and first half handicap are equally good options. Details

Spain and Canada are to open this tournament hosted by Spain. The hosts had no problems in EC qualifiers last season. They are one of the top teams in the world. Last year, they made it into the Olympics final, two years ago at Eurobasket they took bronze. Coach Mondelo has ten or so players who are on the team again. All of them are either WNBA players or play at top European teams. This summer they will be even stronger because Lytte is back. There is a total of 11 players who were at Rio Olympics last season. In two test games, Spain were dominant, especially in defense. Canada have a very young team, without all the key players from the Rio Olympics and FIBA Americas of two years ago. They won the gold there (the US didn't participate). Lisa Thomidis said their goal here is to win 5 games, to focus on team development and see where they are.
Only three players were at Rio and FIBA Americas - Langlois and Plouffe sisters. Langlois had good stats and she is the only one who deserves to be on the national teams. The rest are mostly young players who play in Europe or US and Canada universities. Some are still in high school. This is the first test game for them this year. Their first opponents are mighty Spain. Last year, they lost to Spain in Rio by 13 with the top team. Before Rio, they lost to Spain by 15 and 23, also with a top team. Details

Belarus U20 stood no chance yesterday. By the end of first half, they were down to A team 12-45. In the second half, A team started holding back and won by 42. U20 team coach said they got together only 4 days before the tournament for the first time this year and didn't have time to get to know each other better. The UK played Belarus A team on Monday but that was closed for public. The UK had a 3-point lead by half time but they lost 62-64 in the end. That was the first test game for them. Coach Buceta wanted to give all players some minutes so the best ones didn't play for over 15-18 minutes.
The UK have 6 players from Eurobasket of two years ago and 6 from last year's EC qualifiers. Key scorer Leedham and WNBA player Fagbenle are out but key players are there. They played for French, Spanish or British teams or they're at American universities. They beat Argentina with a lot of struggle yesterday but key players got more time on the floor this time. I think Belarus won't do much more than yesterday. The UK are close to Belarus A quality-wise. The Brits mostly play with the top team in the first half and later on give everyone a chance. They will play the key game for spot 1 tomorrow and I think the difference in quality will get obvious here in the first half. Apart from the 1st half handicap, you can play total handicap as well. Oostende are after their 6th consecutive title. They are on a 16-game winning run in all competitions. They lost to Mons in the first round home in Belgian league and went on to record 17 straight wins since. They finished regular season with 8 wins more than runner-ups Antwerp and that only shows how dominant they are in Belgium. Since they were set to finish in spot 1 with 10 rounds still left in the championship, their motivation and focus wasn't always top level. However, the playoffs are to start today and given coach Gjergja's mindset, I have no doubt they will go full throttle.
Willebroek managed to reach the playoffs for the first time ever. They wanted but couldn't avoid spot 8. They lost to Oostende in the last round by 9 but there is the story about motivation again. Oostende lost earlier in Willebroek but that game came at the worst possible moment for the defending champions - between two semifinal meetings with Chalon in FIBA Europe Cup. Earlier in the season, Oostende won by 11 home, had +20 at half time. In the first game in Willebroek, it was +22 (+22 at HT).
There is no question about the difference in quality here. Oostende have a lot more players to choose from. An extra problem for Willebroek is declining form. They are on a 6-game losing run away. They managed to do well only against weakened Okapi and lost by 8 while they lost by 30 or more against Spirous, Mons and Brussels (double digits by half time). Unlike Oostende, those teams had something to play for in the finish of regular season.
Total handicap is also a very good option but since the next meeting is on Friday and the stats back the first half a bit better, I'm going with that option. Details

Bayern dominate the Bundesliga by far in the last months. Their score in their Audi Dome is 15-1 in the regular part of the season, losing only to Ulm who had a record running win. They got even for it in April by beating Ulm on the road by 15. They beat Brose at home by 8, Oldenburg by 7, Telekom by 12, Bayreuth by 12, Ludwigsburg by 29, Giessen by 50 in the last round, Frankfurt by 25. Alba lost by 12 to Frankfurt in their last road game, by 8 to Bremerhaven, by 6 to the weakened Ulm, by 17 to Brose, by 23 to Telekom, by 12 to Oldenburg. The Berliners are in a 7-game losing run in Bundesliga, and replaced the coach recently. Ahmet Caki was replaced by the 35-year-old Thomas Pach whose job isn't easy because he lost the captain and best player Milosavljević for the rest of the season, and their main point guard Siva hasn't been active for a long time, but he might get to play till the end of the season still. Alba lost to Bayern in Munchen 58-97, in Berlin 56-80, by 8 in Berlin in the BBL cup Final Four, but they were complete then. Bayern are complete, and have Zirbes and Joyce who are in great form, Đorđević won't play with tactics like he did in the last games, and i don't think the weakened Alba can do much here. Berliners will definitely be trying to use their center Kikanović as much as possible, and nobody has as much width in the paint as the Bavarians do. I doubt Alba will manage to avoid losing this. Besides the entire game handicap, a first half handicap is also a decent pick. Details

Brose know that they can't get in the playoffs a few rounds before the end of EL group stage but not even that stopped them from wanting as good results as possible in Europe. They lost to Darussafaka in over time in the penultimate round and then lost a close game to Galatasaray. They played rather modest games in Budesliga in between thsoe two. After EL finished and the important point guard Strelnieks got back on the team, they had a 12-point lead over Bayreuth by half time. Away against Tubingen (without Miller, Radisevic and Zisis) they had a 16-point lead at HT and against Alba home by 15. During Euroleague, this is how they did with teams comparable to their today's opponents in the first half: Göttingen +11, Rasta +23, Jena +17, Würzburg +17, Braunschweig +12, Giessen +20.
They were down at HT in Bremerhaven but that was played not even 48 hours after the defeat by a point to Fenerm a few days before the UNICS. Brose are well-rested and ready today. The second spot is at stake, Bayern are close and since the next round is to be played on Monday, I expect Brose to open this fiercely and to settle it by the end of first half.
Bremerhaven are not in bad form but they have one of the worst defensive ends in the league. I think Brose will have no problems playing their game here. Bremerhaven beat Jena, Tubingen and Rasta away but they were down by 23 to Ulm away, by 8 to Bayern (-25 in total), by 10 to Telekom, by 22 to Alba, by 6 to Oldenburg, by 11 to Bayreut, by 9 to Wurzburg in the last away game. Bremerhaven are just doing the job here, they will not be relegated but at the same time cannot reach playoffs. Details
