Teodosic in good form, the Canadians let the Italians go through

Serbian captain scored 19 points in the first real preliminary match his team played, and added 7 assists in a convincing win against BiH. Canada were defeated for the third time in a row, mostly because big offensive oscillations in the second half-time against Italy

Serbia got a win in their first real preliminary match. In the first round of the Trieste tournament, they defeated BiH national team. The Serbians kept the advantage the whole time, except for a little bit at the beginning. Captain Teodosic scored 10 points in the first period, allowing his team to lead 16-9. Still, after Teletovic came in, BiH made a series and got a minimum advantage at the end of the first period. Serbia finished that part with 4 tied points, and started the second period even better. 

They got tougher in the defense, allowing the opponent to score only 10 points, and they were in the +12 lead by the half-time. By the middle of the third period, it was +15, and then Teletovic scored two three pointers, Sutalo one, and the Bosnians got to -6. Serbia's 11-2 series decided the match, so they started the last period leading 65-50. Teodosic scored 19 points and had 7 assists, Markovic scored 14, and Bjelica and Raduljica 9 each.

- We played a very good, firm defense, crucial for this result. After the match, I went to the locker room and congratulated the players for the way they played and won tonight. We're going on, this is only the first in the row of strong preliminary matches waiting for us - Djordjevic pointed out. He wasn't counting on the center Krstic, according to the announcements, and he won't be in the rest of the tournament, either.

Today, Serbia will face Canada who will be playing their fourth match in four days. Whoever put the schedule for the Canadians clearly has faith in their physical readiness because they're supposed to play six matches in six days. After the first two matches against Croatia, three in this tournament in Trieste, they're having an away match against Spain on Wednesday.

Last night, the Canadian players resisted the tournament host well, after two defeats against Croatia. On Saturday, coach Jay Triano rested four important players against the Croatians, which proved to be a good move. After the first period, the Canadians were in the minimum lead, and in the second, they caught their rhythm and had +6 by the half-time, after they had a double-digit advantage in the second period.

Still, in the rest of the match, the Italians started to have more flow in the offense. They made a 15-0 series between the first and the second period, getting to +5. Canada couldn't score for 7 minutes. The Italians used the Canadians' mistakes a lot and made another 11-0 series at the end of the third period, getting to the 52-48 lead. In the final period, Italy controlled the game and routinely finished the job, despite the win not being convincing with the result.

- We started the match well, getting 6 points ahead by the half-time. The basketball is a game of the series. The key was that the Italians made 11-0 series, and we couldn't reply to that... This Europe tour continues to be good experience for our young players, so they can become the team we want them to be next summer - Triano pointed out.

Altogether, the Canadians played better than in the first two matches in Slavonski Brod. Especially in the first half-time when they dictated the rhythm, but they fell apart defensively in the rest of the match. Those oscillations are a big problem of theirs. They had 12 turnovers, some in very important points. They only had 38% field goal. Joseph lead the team with 16 points (6/10 field goal). Ejim scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds from the bench.
