Hats off to what Saudi Arabia did against Croatia and Belarus but Germany is simply at a different level. I expect them to trash their opponents today. They have no mercy, play perfect defense, have two top goal keepers and there is no holding back on that team. They won the first half against Chile 17-6, and had an 18-8 lead against Arabia in Doha at World Championship (36-19). The Saudis are not the same team but their key players are the same. That's not even important though, because they cannot be compared to Germany. They are without left handed players at right back, they have no one over 190 cm tall and I really don't know how they will score today.
Germany had 11 against Chile at half time, 5 against Hungary, 6 and 8 against Austria and Romania in test games respectfully. I don't expect anything under 9-10 here. Details

After the win over Poland, the path toward the round of 16 will be wide open for Brazil if they defeat Japan, so they will be highly motivated. Brazil demolished Poland by 5 at halftime yesterday with great defense (Thiagus, who means a lot to them, is back), and even such wounded Poland is a level better than Japan. Under Nunes they also defeated Slovakia by 7, and they are similar to Japan in quality. There may not be many relevant results on their side, but I am sure they will be maximally motivated today and they will want to decide the game early on so they could possibly relax a bit in the second half. Japan showed a lot of problems against 6-0 zone in the game against France, which is no surprise since they are much shorter than other teams, and they could have a lot of problems today against Brazil's defensive blocked formed by Ponciano and Thiagus. On the other side, Japan's defense is very weak, and they cannot really stop anyone. They were down by 3 at halftime against Russia, but Russia were in the lead by 5 or more the entire half, and Japan closed the gap due to their bad defense. In the second round they were down by 8 against France who played relaxed, and from earlier they were down by 5 against Bahrein, 3 and 7 against Qatar. Three years ago they played a friendly head-to-head, and Brazil were in the lead by 7 then, by 18 at the end.
Everything here is in Brazil's favor, they are motivated, have great defense that can cause a lot of problems for Japan and use counterattacks (like Russia and France have), and Japan's defense is very bad and I cannot see how they could stop anyone, because Brazil can outplay them both 1-on-1 and with outside shots. I expect the game to be decided at halftime and I think Brazil shouldn't have any problems with covering this low margin in the first 30 minutes. Details

No need to spend many words on this one. Lokomotiv are currently the best defense of VTB League and Eurocup, without a doubt. In VTB they allow 65 on average, and they left eight out of 11 opponents under the 70.5 margin. In the last three, versus Astana, Zenit and UNICS, they allowed 51, 62 and 64. Those numbers need no additional explanation. We can only add that between that in Spain, against Gran Canaria, they allowed 71, and then at home against Murcia 60. And we all know how Spanish play. Kalev's number are not under the wanted margin, but that doesn't matter because games against Novgorod, Jenisej and similar teams have no weight. At home against CSKA they recorded 68 with 24 in the last quarter when everything was over. Against Khimki at home they recorded 77, 24 in the last quarter. Against Zenit they remained at 73, last week against Riga at only 66. And those are all defenses under Lokomotiv's level. In 11 games of VTB League Lokomotiv only allowed over three times - CSKA 74, Saratov 74 and Khimki 73. And the offense of those teams can't fit in the same sentence with Kalev's. Details

I'm writing this in case the info comes out that Tej will play today. He'll play even if there's a slightest chance due to the importance of this match.

This is a 'to be or not to be' match for Tunisia, since they will have a harder time beating Slovenia in the next round, and without two wins they can't pass on. They fell apart against Macedonia in the last 20 minutes, it was expected the same would happen against Spain yesterday, but it didn't. They were defensively great, the limited Spanish offense struggled with their zone and they've shown their greatest weapons. Undoubtedly the defense will be on a high level today too, and since Iceland are at least equally modest in positional offense like Spain, then we shouldn't expect Iceland to be overly efficient, at least not in the first half while Tunisia, as a rule, oscillate. Tunisia had the marginal 27 goals against Macedonia by half-time, but Macedonia were criminal in the defense who a lot of times played 7-on-6. At the Olympics they stayed under this margin in four games, only against Croatia where they didn't stand a chance and they fell apart was it 35, completely unimportant for this bet.
Iceland's defense turned to be their biggest ace which was to be expected, since offensively they don't have a lot of options. They struggled Spain in the first half with their defense, Slovenia the same, and they'll be looking for their chance today. This is the last train (the same as for Tunisia) for the second round, and if they lost today, they will have to try and find a way out against Macedonia. Thus I expect a maximum fight from the first minute, and no more than 25 goals by half-time.
Iceland stopped with Spain at 22, with Slovenia at 19, even in preparations when they played a lot faster they were at 27 against Egypt, while matches against Hungary and Denmark where they ran around a lot and had stronger offenses don't seem relevant (33 and 30 goals). In the Euro qualifications in November they had 26 against Ukraine and 22 against the Czech Republic; last summer in the qualifications for this WC they had 17 and 23 against Portugal, all four games with Palmarsson in the line-up. This is a match which will decide who will pass into the second round of the EC qualifications. It's important to note that Estonia still have a very short rotation. With such a rotation, they're doomed to only one game style, to try and be competitive against the hosts as long as possible. In order to succeed in that, they have to play long attacks, and then be great in the defense. Their offense is currently going through a crisis. They're missing some important links and that can be felt on the result. In earlier stages when they had some players available, they recorded 13 and 14 against Kosovo who, you will agree, are a step lower than Turkey. The hosts are announcing an amazing approach to the game under the new selector. That means they're pumped up and we shouldn't doubt it. They will have a well-filled hall supporting them. And a few days ago when they played their first leg, Turkey had 11-9 at half-time. There's no reason for Estonia not to be able to record three or four more goals today. Everything over today's margin is completely illogical because they would ruin themselves; in same conditions at home they lost the second half with -8. Thus why their under in the first half seems to be a very good opportunity for this match. Details

Caceres went to this away game without their main play Marco, and the important center Riauka didn't practice the whole week due to back problems and he almost certainly won't play today. Since a few days ago they ended their contract with Nathanaelsson, and they haven't found a replacement, they will have a very thin frontcourt, and Breogan are the strongest in the the paint where players such as Gilling, Stainbrook and Fakuade are great lately. Bereogan are complete and they're in swing again which they've lost for a short time in December. They tied three wings, they beat last weekend the might Burgos who were on an eight-game winning run in an away game with +9, before that the strong Ourense at home with +13. At home they rarely lose, their record is 8-2. They lost to Huesca at the start of the season when they had problems with absences, and recently to Arberri who have been very good in the past month.
Caceres recorded five wins in the last seven rounds. They fell with -15 against Palencia, -22 against Burgos, -24 against Ourense. In away games their record is 1-7. They were beaten by teams such as weak Marin. They only beat Arberri, which is the exception confirming the rule.
In the first head-to-head this season Breogan won in Caceres with 63 points of difference. Today we shouldn't expect something like that, but the circumstances are such that I expect Breogan's convincing win. They're in good shape and complete, in the hunt for the first place, they're strong at home. Caceres have been limited to 6-7 players who will have full playtime. They aren't convincing in away games, and lately they lost to teams the quality of Breogan. Breogan are the owners of the strongest offense of the second league, they're fast, so it's no wonder they don't suit Caceres. Details

Tunisia have certain problems here. First of all, they're missing their first goalkeeper, and that's a handicap for them at the start. After that, they don't even have real replacements for all of the players, and as the tournament goes on, that will be felt. When we talk about Tunisia as a team, their offense is pretty bad. Of course, some will mention they recorded 30 goals against Macedonia, but that Macedonia and defense can't fit into the same sentence. Also, the preparation games in Croatia can hardly be relevant. They served only to paint a better picture about Slovenia and that's it. Tunisia showed their real face at the Olympics where they were terrible. They only played in the group phase, and this was their efficiency: France -2 at the opening, Denmark -8. They lost to weak Argentina, and Croatia tore them apart. Before that Poland did the same, Slovenia twice, and then Germany. Today they're the same team who can't be saved. Spain aren't known was a crusher team, but their progress is visible under the new selector. Still a lot of it is based on defense, but offensively it looks a lot better. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Finland were smoothly won, and in the preparations for this competition, Poland and Argentina lost with a double-digit difference. Qatar was at -5, but we know they're led by Rivera. They opened up the championship quite weakly against Iceland, they missed a lot, were searching for their game, fell behind at half-time. But, half an hour of real game is more than enough for them to show what they can do. In the end they won 27-21. Today there's no doubt they will be motivated, and that's hard to think of for Tunisia who tomorrow have a very important game against Iceland. Besides, we saw how Tunisia play when they fall apart. What's realistic is to expect that the best players will spend the second half on the bench. As the icing on the cake, we can mention the head-to-head from the last WC when it was 28-20, and you guessed it - Spain won. Today we can expect the same thing. Details

Tipsarevic looks unstoppable. He focused on challenges at the start of the season, avoided the Australian Open qualifications and now he's on the verge of earning new 80 points, one step away from returning to Top 100. Last week he had a tougher fixture, and he didn't lose a set. He's here on an eight-set winning run in which he didn't lose more than three games. Yesterday against Altmaier he had 6-3, 5-0, so it only could have been more convincing. Li, at 30, still didn't manage to make it to Top 200. He has only 31 challenger wins in his entire career, and the matches with Top 100 players clearly show a limit. Against them his record is 1-11, and the one win he has was six years ago against Gabashvilli who spent most of his time outside of this company. He lost the last 10 such matches without an earned set. I'll write in the brackets how many games he won against his opponents: Anderson (4), Cervantes (5), Soeda (5), Duckworth (7), Soeda (9), Golubev (5), Delbonis (7), Bogomolov (3), Querrey (4) and Verdasco (4). So, in nine out of 10 of those defeats he was under 19.5, but the very good Tipsarevic in shape is a stronger players than most on the list. Besides, Li had a very gentle roster here. Only Garin was from Top 250, and he should have/could have lost to him in two sets. Before that he saved a match-point against Maden in the second set. Details

In the last 20 home matches, France were defeated only twice, and they often crushed their opponents. We'll mention the most important - official matches: Brazil 31-16 (17-7), Lithuania 37-20 (21-7), Switzerland 31-23 (19-9), Macedonia 35-24 (17-10), The Czech Republic 41-25 (20-12), Turkey 31-23 (17-10), Norway 32-28 (15-10). I went four years back - not something I do - but in this case it's important because it shows the team's character, and Karabatic and Omeyer have been the team leaders in the last 10 years. So, the fact that they crushed Brazil at the opening of the championship is no surprise, that's how they do it in official matches at home. Those are all teams stronger than Japan.
Russia took the lead against Japan 7-1, they had 5-6 points of difference during the first half, and they won at half-time with +3 thanks to defense's indolence. They struggled for 10 minutes in the second half, but in the end it was -10. Japan don't have a lot of comparable matches, Qatar crushed them three times by half-time (9-16, 8-18, 9-14, two friendlies), and once they stood up to them (12-15). That Qatar and Russia are the closest comparison to France, even though a lot lower than they are.
I won't lie, they showed a good side in the offense in the game against Russia, that's intriguing, but the defense is non-existent. I don't see another option that France's full domination. All types of handicap are good, as well as the France's team over. However, I'll take the half-time handicap because France's defense is good, and the second half they will probably spend without the main stars. Japan can't do better than Brazil, Switzerland, Macedonia, The Czech Republic... Details

Group F is played in Friedrichshafen with Germany as the hosts, but even if they weren't, Croatia has nothing to do here. Last year Germany were fourth at WEVZA, and considering that all of the teams from that competition are playing in these qualifications, we can say that the biggest quality is focused in them. They beat Switzerland who are an uncomfortable team with 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19), and France 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-20), and lost only to the strongest of teams, and not without a fight. Against Belgium (silver) it was 1-3 (25-23, 19-25, 23-25, 16-25), and the champions Italy also 1-3 (21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 17-25), while in the fight for the third place they lost to Spain with 2-3. They did serious preparations before the qualifications. They hosted France, and despite the two losses (1-3, 2-3), the impression is more than great. On the other hand we have Croatia who are known by their weak work with younger teams from various reasons, and that reflects on the results. At MEVZA's championship by the end of last year they were sixth in a competition of seven teams. They only won in two games, and that was against the weak Slovakia (in the group), and the bottom-placed Austria, and Slovakia paid them back in the match for the fifth place. What's especially noticeable are the defeats by Israel 1-2 (23-25, 14-25, 28-26), The Czech Republic 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-17), and Slovakia 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-21) who are second class teams in this generation. The fact is that they were without the important receiver Hanzic, but the mentioned defeats were too convincing for one player to change all of that. We also have Croatia's results from the year before the last one, and then they were last at MEVZA's championship with one win in five games against an even more desperate Austria. Slovenia and Slovakia crushed them with 3-0, The Czech Republic with 3-1 with 14 points of difference, and Hungary did it with 33 even though they lost a set (24-26). I think the Germans will solve this in three sets with no problems. Details

Chile have talked only about this game ever since they started preparing for the championship, knowing that this is their chance. Garralda said a long time that they will look for their chance in shooting from the distance. Belarus no longer have Rutenka who lead them into a win in Doha against Chile 34-23. Chile put up a good fight until half time (14-11). Chile have three Feuchtmann brothers, some important players and they believe they can do much better. Last year at the Panamerican in Argentina, they stood up to Argentina and Brazil, who are close to Belarus. It was 12-13 and 13-7 at half times of that game. Chile mostly got limited under this margin in Doha and fell apart in the second half. Belarus are physically tough in defense and will be able to defend Chile. It's important that they no longer have the offensive strength they have, which is obvious from the last test games where they rarely went over 25. If they could got limited to 25 two years ago and I expect similar outcome today in the most important game for both teams. Who ever loses this will no longer have their faith in their own hands and that will complicate things. Chile want a surprising win here, they have been preparing for this for long . Belarus have Chile and Arabia in the first two rounds and this is their focus. Details

When the opponents don't suit, getting past that is difficult. Zvezda are 6-0 against Fener in the last 15 months and that's no coincidence. They were not even close to winning any of those games. The first head-to-head of this season finished with a 15-point difference, two from Belgrade last season with 23 and 14 points. Fener will now play with more or less the same team. Zvezda acquired some offensively important players and has been relying on system and team game this season, which doesn't work against all opponents. It's no accident taht they lost to Oly, Baskonia and Fener. Their game styles do not suit Zvezda.
Some will say that they beat Real and CSKA home. They beat Real in previous seasons as well, CSKA last season in playoffs in Moscow played close games with Zvezda and the team from Belgrade had the attack for a win in one. They were never close to something like that against Fener and I don't think anything will change there. Details

Georgia and volleyball are concepts which do not go together. This Georgian team is no exception, as their results from the EEVZA championship from a month ago confirm. They came in 7th out of 8 teams and Belarus finished 3rd with just one defeat (Russia 3-1) and three wins. One of those wins was over Georgia 25-33, 25-11 and 25-11. They trashed Latvia (25:19, 25:15, 25:17), won two sets against Russia and beat Ukraine in straight sets in the match for spot 3. Georgia got a total of 37 points against Russia, 58 against Latvia and the game with Azerbaijan wasn't important because they are similar to Georgia. Also, Belarus went to Poland late in 2016 to play 3 matches with the home team. They lost all 3 but Poland have a great generation and they won the EEVZA champions (3-1 over Russia).

    - We prepared well and even practiced on Christmas Day. We have tough games with Bulgaria and Denmark in Sofia and I expect us to be at a high level against Gerogia at the start - Belarus' coach said.

To trash somebody by 40 like Belarus did Georgia cannot be an accident. Belarus are simply two level above their opponents. Apart from the under, good options are Georgia team under, straight sets, points handicap, that is, any option against Georgia. Details

Jones got the wild card as national u-18 champion. He was good in doubles last year, but didn't win a set in singles. In December he played qualifiers for the Australian Open wild card, these matches are played at best of five, and he won 6 games against Polmans who is outside the Top 200. The only match that can go against the handicap on him is his win over his compatriot who is now in the Top 1000, but not even that since that Australian recorded only one challenger win in his career. Jones gave statements that he is happy to be invited to AO's qualifications, his only goal is to enter the main tournament, he thinks he can achieve that. Arevalo's record against players outside the Top 100 was 10-0 last season, he lost a set only once. In the other 9 wins he has 8 matches where he limited his opponents to five or less games. The only exception is Mendoza with tie break, but he was in the Top 800. Best of all, Arevalo finished last season with 2 back-to-back futures titles. He even switched surfaces in the period of few days, and lost a set only once. He limited 7 opponents to five games and under, Jones is no better than those players. If he had not won that weak U-18 championship he would be in the USA preparing for College season where he is the 4th player in his school with 3-3 record last season. Details

Ozaki is 1-9 against Top 60 players, she beat Stephens last season and Stephens recorded her 4 out of 10 defeats of the season to Top 100 players. Ozaki lost her 9 matches to (break-difference in brackets): Beck (0), Peng (9), Goerges (5), McHale (7), Stosur (8), Svitolina (8), Bouchard (2), Putintseva (6) i Venus Williams (7). She covered the handicap twice, against Beck in 2013 and against Bouchard last season. Ozaki played the qualifiers, had two days to rest before the Bouchard match, while her opponents traveled from Kuala Lumpur. Looking at players around Top 60, Otaki lost to: Hibino (7), Lepchenko (10), Konjuh (8 i 9), Doi (6). Mayr beat her by 9 and Periera by 7. Ozaki did beat Flipkens though. The match against Nara here, where Ozaki won the first game in the second set is not something you see every day but Nara is in decline over the past two seasons.
Safarova beat Golubic by 5 and Allertova by 9 this season. Both of them are better than Ozaki. All of Safarova's results from last season need to be taken with a grain of salt because she was making a comeback from an injury. Still, she was 5-2 against players outside of Top 100. She beat Gavrilova (8), Karolinu Pliskovu (3), Stosur (5), Vandeweghe (6) which shows where she belongs. Two yeasr ago she beat Hsieh by 7, Naru (on clay court) 10, Pironkova 8, Puig 7, Mladenovic by 7. Granted, she lost to Shvedova, Larsson, Smitkova, Dulgheru but none of them can be compared to Ozaki. Safarova is better then Ozaki by at least 6 games at the moment (7-8 are expected, that is the game difference Ozaki had against Venus, Stosur, Svitolina, Peng). Safarova's win in straight sets is good news as well because Ozaki won sets in her 9 defeats to Top 60 players. The sets she won against Bouchard and Svitolina were due to opponents' problems. Darcis was more than convincing in the first round. I decided not to go with that tip because I wasn't sure about the limits of his 17-year-old opponent. Podlipnik is 29 and his limits are pretty clear. He was in Top 200 only for a short while and is now not even in Top 400. Darcis is very convincing in these kind of matches. He is 21-1 against Top 200 players this and last season. Also, he recorded last 12 of those in straight sets. These are his results on hard court this and last season: Moutet (10), Mektić (7), De Minaur* (6), Krawietz* (8), Bachinger* (6), Ilhan* (6), Paul (7). He beat the players marked * indoors. He should be motivated here, he has no points to defend since May. Podlipnik was 3-12 against Top 200 players last year and he beat Dutra Silva twice. Those were mostly matches on clay court. He had some good performances but he played just two matches on a surface other than clay court. Ovreall, he is 1-15 against Top 500, 0-5 against Top 200 on hardcourt. These are his results against Top 5: Struff 36 46, Fucsovics 36, Gabashvilij 76 16 36, A.Gonzalze 16 06 and 36 67 against Karlovic a long time ago in Davis Cup. He got limited to 4 games against Opelka last year and Opelka almost never records such results. Balaji limited him to 6 games and he's not even in Top 300. He recorded both wins of last season against players outside of Top 500. He lost 6 games to an Australian ranked outside of Top 1200 here in the first round. Details

AEK's coach, Jure Zdovc, says ahead of every Champions League game that they are going for the win, that it's their most important game. Today's game against Ludwigsburg is really their most important game. AEK are at 6-5 record, they compromised their situation with bad away performances, and if they lose today, they cannot count on the second position and direct advancement, their situation would complicate even more, and their advancement would come into question. AEK showed this season that they are home court oriented, it's not easy for anyone to play at their arena, so of the 11 official games, they lost only one, to the leaders of the group, Besiktas, who obviously don't suit them. AEK lost at Ludwigsburg in a tight finish, I expect the Greeks to be much more determined today. On Saturday, at home, they defeated Aris, who have been in great form, by 20 points, and in the Champions League they recently defeated Spirou by 20, Partizan by 10, Sassari by 20, and they concede less than 70 points on average at home. The great news is that they are complete, Vasileiadis is back, Mavroeidis is fully fit, and new center Elonu is clearly a real reinforcement.
Ludwigsburg have been good in the Champions League, they secured their advancement, they are still fighting for the second position, but they are not as convincing away as they are at home. In the Champions League they lost at Stelmet and Partizan, won at Sassari. This entire season, if we look at difficult away games, they did not fare well. They lost by 17 at Ulm and Bayreuth, and by 29 at Bayern, plus these two Champions League defeats.
Considering AEK's defensive performances at home, a solid option here is a team under on the Germans, but even better option is the Greek's win in handicap because they will not only go for the win, they will want to win by over five to have a better head-to-head record against Ludwigsburg and that way stay in the battle for the second position in the group. With 60 points on average, Helios have the worst offensive end in the league. That average would have been much lower had they not hit 78 and 74 points against fast-paced Bakken, who basically do not play defense at all.
They recorded unders in the other 9 games. They hit 54 twice against Aris, 55 and 59 against Monaco, 56 and 62 against Fraport, 53 against banvit, 55 against Nymburk and most importantly, 61 against Ironi.
They would sometimes record unders in the domestic championship and the Alpe-Adria Cup. They hit 52 against Arkadia, 67 against Krka and Rogaska, 65 against Lastovka, 62 and 64 against Lasko.
Ironi are not your typical defnese-oriented teams like most clubs in this group but they did limit Fraport (54) and Helios (61) under this margin. They limited Tsmoki to 66 and 67 in qualifiers.
In the head-to-head match, where Helios recorded 61 points, Casey hit 19 but the latter left Slovania. Lelic is out for sure today, Bolcina is questionable. They didn't do great in the Ironi game but they are important players for Vulic's team. Jones cannot play Champions League and they hit 64 points with him in Lasko the other day (63 in regulation time). Details
