LA Chargers - Chicago (19:22)

The Chargers on a 4-game losing run

  • Published:

Things got even worse as they learned the top receiver Allen got injured, which will make the offense at least one level weaker. But, Rivers still has enough weapons for continuing his streak of 5 games with more than 300 passing yards each

The San Diego Chargers are having another usual season. They are doing amazingly, at least when it comes to offense, but aren't taking advantage of the chances they get, which in the end costs them the win. The Chargers are currently on a 4-game losing run after recording a defeat last Sunday in Baltimore (29-26) after being in the lead for the most part of the match.

- We could have reacted better in some situations and we weren't exactly lucky. We simply have to keep on believing and pushing forward. We can win four games in a row just like we lost 4 in a row - Rivers said.

Including the last season, the Chargers won only 3 out of 12 games. They suffered 4 out of 6 defeats this season by 8 or less points, which is very typical of them. The bad results are almost incomprehensible if we know that Rivers has yet to face a defense capable of stopping him. That especially goes for the last 5 games, as he finished each of them with more than 300 passing yards, while completing 246 passes, which seems a bit unbelievable. He passed for 2,753 yards in that period and will probably keep on doing just as well today, regardless of the fact he'll be faced with a defense that allowed the opponents more than 240 yards only once.

The Chargers lost their top receiver Allen last Sunday (out for the rest of the season). His absence will be a big blow for the offense since Allen had 67 catches for 752 yards and 4 TDs in 8 games. Dontrell Inman, who has 21 catches for 300 yards in his short carrier of 14 games, will be Allen's substitute.

- We're not going about this thinking we need to find a guy capable of having 70 catches in the next 8 games. I don't know whether that will happen. It could but I think we'll focus on getting everyone a bit more productive - Rivers said.

The Chargers will have to do without running back Oliver and linebacker Williams for the rest of the season as well, but neither one of them is as important as Allen. The offense produces 423,2 yards but for only 23,9 points. Luckily for the Chargers, they are now to face a team that allows the opponents 28,9 points. San Diego do not struggle with offense only as the defense allows the opponents 362,9 yards and 28,4 points. They allowed the opponents to produce points in 70 percent of attempts (14/20), which is of course, league's high.

The Chicago Bears are in similar trouble as injuries and bad final parts of the games saw them record only 2 wins in 7 games. After losing in overtime in Detroit, John Fox's team were 7 points up five minutes before the end to finally lose 37-34.

- We were in the game until the very end, as in most of the games over the past 4 weeks. We won two and lost two because of the bad finish. I think we need to do better in those final parts of the games. We have to be using the chances we have better - coach Fox said.

The Bears lost one of their to players last week as well. Matt Forte suffered a knee injury that will see him sidelined for the next few games. Eddie Royal also got injured, but luckily for Chicago, neither of them needs a surgery. Forte recorded 767 yards this season (rushing and receiving), while Royal has 26 catches for 171 yards.

- No one will come and rescue us. We have to work with what we've got - coach Fox said.

Jeremy Langford, whom the Bears landed in the 4th draft round, will step in for Forte. he had 12 carries for 46 yards last Sunday.

- It won't be too much for him. He is willing to learn. I think Stan Drayton (running backs' coach) did a great job with him. He that specific character. He learns very fast for such a young player - coach Fox said about his running back. his team won 5 out of the last 6 games against the Chargers, but the last pen was played in 2011.

I normally avoid overs at margins of over 70 or so yards but I think this one is at least 10 yards off, which has to be taken advantage of. When Brandon Marshal left, the no. receiver became Alshon Jeffrey but sadly, what was supposed to be the best season in his carrier became a nightmare. He played only three out of 7 games but still managed to show off all of this talent. He recorded 23 catches (out of 37 passes) for 78, 147, and 116 yards. His importance for the Bears' offense is obvious if we know that Jay Cutler sent 35 percent of passes in the last two games his way. For example, the best receiver in the league and the leading player in this category at the start of week nine Julio Jones was targeted in 33 percent of his QB's passes. What makes this pick really good is the match up. The Chargers are bad at stopping passes and their two starting corner backs are 12-13 centimeters shorter than Jeffrey, who also has freakishly long arms. The match up is brilliant and the absences of the Bears' best receiver (Royal) and best running back who participates in passing a lot as well, make this a very interesting margin.
