Ikaros Esperos - Apollon Patras (72:64)

Very talented in offense, very irregular

Ikaros took advantage of a week of practice to fit Beck and Gagaloudis in the team and they are ready for the home premiere. Apollon play very fast basketball, but their coach thinks that they don't have optimal offense and is therefor insisting on defense

Ikaros definitely haven't started the season very well, but the defeat against Rethymno can always be tolerated, especially because it seems that many will have a tough time against Rethymno. But despite the loss, coach Kalafatakis was very pleased with what he saw:

I congratulate my players because they return to the match two or three times after Rethymno started getting away from us. Unfortunately, there wasn't strength for anything more but this is a good indicator. You saw how much Gagaloudis and Beck mean for our game. They're gonna be great re- inforcements and I can't wait for them to be assimilated with the rest of the team.


Ikaros have indeed put together a quality team that, in time should become better and better. They're most powerful in back positions which is bursting with talent, so a match with a large number of points is therefor no surprise. We might keep seeing this kind of Ikaros because they have 5 or 6 players who can score 20 points in every match if they get the chance-


A problem for them is going to be playing under the hoop, thus they failed in jumps against Rethymno because in the five they have Manolopoulos and Borovnjak who are not classic centeres. Against Trepalovc from Apollon they might have some trouble, but they also might take advantage of their slow return to defense.

We had a week to practice before this match, and it's very important for us because Gagaloudis and Beck now get all the plays. We expect to play much better than in the first match and with fan support we can get our first victory - said Kalafatakis.

It won't be easy because Apollon proved in the first match that they're the more serious  team. They destroyed Ilysialos, had a double digit lead after the first quarter and they kept it.

We won this match with our defense. We can't expect to win all matches at the beginning of the season with offense. That's why we had three playmakers on the court for most of the match, to get the game organization, but a more aggressive game.

What er can see right away is a very fast game which is lead by a number of Americans. Wilson and Taylor can jump very well in wing positions and their athletic abilities allow Apollon to dominate in jumps, but to also use the fast transition.. Alongside the great Argyropoulos in play, this team is capable of playing great basketball, and they aren't coming for a picnic against Ikaros.

Like us, Ikaros won in the first round and they have a lot of self-confidence. We know they have a very good team and it's gonna be a tough match, but if we show the same energy we had against Ilyysiakos, we can win - thinks Argyropoulos while his coach thinks that the team isn't in ideal condition:

-We're not in top form, so we'll again have to emphasize our defense because we can't expect much from our offense at the beginning of the season. If we play well in defense, we'll stand the chance of winning.

We'll have two offensivally very potent teams that both emphasize defense at the start of the season. But this is the tempo both teams are playing at and with this much offensive talent, we can expect over points, despite what the coaches say.

Apollon had a great start to the season. They overran Ilysiakos with great defense, even if the main power of the team should lie in talented shooters. Playmaker Argyropoulos has been leading the physically great Americans and with their great game transition Apollon could create big problems for many teams. Here I see them in a very good position to win against the hosts because they have a big advantage in the paint, where Trepalovac, Wilson and Taylor should dominate and prevail in rebounds. Should they also manage to stop Gagaloudis and Beck, who are not yet fully coordinated with the rest of the team, Apollon will be halfway to victory. As a safer variant, of course, I recommend playing this handicap.
