Banska Bystrica - Kosice (4:3)

Duel of two leading teams and two best goalies in the league

  • Published:

Banska goalie Zane Kalemba is the best in the league with 94,14% of saves while the Kosice goalie Alexander Hylak is just behind with 93,87% of saves in the season

The Banska Bystrica team secretly desired the win against Poprad for two reasons. The first is obvious, because of the win itself and three new points while the other was connected with today's match. They knew that if they win away at Poprad they would await the derby with Kosice as the second placed team in the league. Can one imagine a better invitation for fans? The match was turned to their favor by several things. Let's start with the goalie. Kalemba again had a great night and saved 32 of 34 shots on goal (94,11%) and gave the team support in decisive moments. In the offensive play Handlovsky was inspired with two goals in the opponents' net, both from powerplay. That was another reason Banska celebrated. They took advantage of two powerplays out of seven offered, while on the other side their penalty killing was successful on all eight occasions.

- A very interesting match to the very end. In the first half of the game we were better and more active and then Poprad took initiative and leveled the score. In the end we scored the winning goal and goalie Kalemba supported us - coach Vladimir Orszagh analyzed the game.

This is not the first time Kalemba's contribution was decisive for success. His saves this season average 94,14% which makes him the best goalie in the league at the moment. Banska is on a four win streak at the moment and they are full of self-confidence ahead of the game against the league leader. Although, the Rams might have preferred to play that game away at Kosice. They have the best away score in the league with 17 points won away, while they only won 10 on home ice. Another thing worth considering is that the match against Kosice will be their fifth in eight days which means that their stamina levels are going "red". However, coach Orszagh can be partly at ease because his team is the second youngest in the league, so they have the ability to heal sooner.

Kosice took what they had to in Martin. On paper they seemed the team with more quality and eventually they proved it on ice. They outshot the Martin team by 41-23 and they put pressure on their opponents from the very start. However they needed 23 minutes to break the resilient hosts who soon leveled the score back. By the end of the second period Anton Tomko's players were back in the lead and they didn't drop it again. As a matter of fact close to the end of the game they confirmed the three points from Martin with their third goal.

- The winner was decided by the third goal. In the first half of the game we were the better team but we relaxed after the first goal and Martin leveled the score. It is too bad that we didn't get away by two goals in front sooner, so it was dramatic until the very end. Still we deserved the win because we dominated most of the match. I am thankful to the guys for their commitment and fighting spirit - coach Anton Tomko said after the match.

Kosice goalie Hylak was also superb in this game saving 22 of 23 shots on goal. Their excellent goalie is just slightly behind Kalemba of Banska Bystrica with 93,87% of saves and he is one of the main reasons Kosice conceded the least amount of goals in the league - 25 in 14 games.

Kosice are the leading team of the league and they are five points ahead of second placed Banska Bystrica, but their away scores are not as convincing given the quality of their line-up. Even in games they won, it wasn't always smooth (for example against Zilina). They played against Banska this season on their home ice and they won after turning the score around in the closing 10 minutes of the game.

As far as the absentees list, forward Svatos should be back into the line-up, at least the Kosice official web-site says so. Defenseman Deyl and the prominent forward Pasek will be out for some time.

Yes, one of the reasons for this bet are excellent goalies in both teams, which can be seen from the game's announcement. However that is not all, another reason is the importance of the duel itself. The clash of the two best placed teams in the league always means more motivation on both sides. Even though the season just began, points won in this duel have some extra weight. I mostly praise the offensive power of Kosice in my announcements, but they don't show it in away games, at least not as much as in home matches. So they only scored more than three goals once, against Trencin when the opponents weren't tuned in as they should be. Banska had a shooter's night only against the offensively driven Poprad. In all other games, five in total, they ended with less than 5.5 goals. Kosice remained under that margin in five games out of six. With all of the above mentioned put together, I expect this in their head to head clash as well.
