Mattersburg - Horn (0:1)

Mattersburg fired coach Tatar and brought back Lederer

  • Published:

The loss in Vienna was disastrous for the coach of Mattersburg Alfred Tatar and the assistant Karner and long-standing strategist Lederer will together try to bring the former first division team back to the top of the table

After an embarrassing loss in Vienna against weak First Vienna, sixth loss in the season already, Alfred Tatar expectedly got fired from Mattersburg. The last season's first division team counted on being the first candidate for the second division title this season but after 12 rounds they are 10 points behind the leading Altach.

When he took over the duty of the coach of Mattersburg this summer, many people were doubting that Tatar has the capacity to lead a team which has the first position as their objective and the events in the first third of the championship confirmed those doubts. Tatar didn't have any game plans nor an idea how to motivate the former first division team of Mattersburg and 22 conceded goals are a disaster for the club who dreamed of first place.

The club administration decided that the assistant coach Markus Karner and the long-standing strategist Franz Lederer will lead the team together until further notice because Lederer has the role of a sporting director. Lederer got out of luck at the end of the last season after he has kept Mattersburg in the top division for years with minimal investments and developing of his own players. Lederer and Karner will start rescuing what can still be rescued in today's match against Horn who are ninth and have the weakest defense in the league and 28 conceded goals and a big advantage for the new and old coach is that they know the situation in the club well so their primary task is to raise the players mentally on a higher level and bring them back their lost confidence.

 - We spent a lot of time on individual and group discussions and conversations because we know every individual is important for the success of the team. We tried to make it clear for them that everyone needs to take over their part of responsibility and do their best for the club in the coming matches in order for the team to improve the results. It is important that the team believes we are still capable of being on top. We need to be aware of our strength and our advantages need to have an effect already in the match against Horn - explains the former assistant coach Markus Karner and the bad news for Mattersburg is a serious knee injury of the midfielder Maunel Seidl who is lost for this season while the experienced Romanian midfielder Lovin doesn't have the right to appear against Horn because of excess cards. Dominik Doleschal is not able to play because of problems with the knee since the start of the season.

 - For starters, we realized in which phase of the game we have the most problems and that is the defensive behavior because we conceded too many goals. That was the most important thing we focused on in everyday work and training. However, the handling of the ball is also important, we need to be capable of setting up our own pace and style of the game - points out Karner who considers the win against Horn extremely important and a possible turning point in the season.

 - Our stadium needs to be a fort in each match and more than on the opponent we need to focus on our performance. We desperately want to show we can win against Horn and we need players who are ready to do their best for the team and for the fans in each seconds of the game. I am convinced that will already happen today - concludes one of two new coaches of Mattersburg Markus Karner. It definitely needs to be rememberd that in their first match this season in Horn, Mattersburg were losing 0-3 and in the end they won 4-3.

The coach of Horn Willhelm Schuldes probably gets nauseous when he remembers that match and, unfortunate for him, there were more such matches where the defense ruined everything good that was done in the offense. Both of the rivals today are similar in those weaknesses but Horn also has a lot more modest quality of individuals and are facing a difficult away match.

They will lack the suspended midfielder Michael Stanislaw and the scorer of four goals Sahanek as well as the standard young defender Dominik Baumgartner who is with the U-17 national team. Bernd Gschweidl's appearance is also uncertain because of thigh injury but he will probably be in the combination for the lineup and his four goals so far prove that he is important to the coach Schuldes.

 - We shouldn't have lost against Hartberg in the last match and I think we were harmed by the referees when they sent off Stanislaw and that is not the first time it happened this season - said the strategist of Hron who is aware that the situation is rather complicated.

 - We are not in a good situation. We are troubled by absences but during these two weeks we recovered and we will try to do everything we can for a positive result in Mattersburg. The home team are pressured to win and their possible nervousness we might use to our advantage - hopes the strategist of Horn Willhelm Schuldes.

Alfred Tatar has done nothing in 12 matches and left Mattersburg 10 points away from first place, but Austria 2 is an unpredictable competition and they could always catch up, or at least threaten to do it. Last season was the best example of this, when Austria Lustenau smashed it in the first part of the championship and then decided to lose most of their matches since they weren't financially sound enough for the top division.
Mattersburg haven't given up their hope of joining the battle for the top and have put Franz Lederer as their assistant coach. Starting with today's match against Horn, they're moving in for the kill. Changing manager often produces positive changes, mobilizing the players and making them more serious and motivated, and such effects are expected in Mattersburg. This team has quality, there are good individuals, and although important midfielder Seidl has been injured, the new duo on the bench has enough advantages to put pressure on weakened Horn, who have conceded the most goals in the league by far and will have to make do without some of their first team players today.
We should expect open football and lots of goals, as well as dominance and aggression on part of Mattersburg players, who are aware that they can't make any more mistakes against weaker rivals. In their first head-to-head this season, Horn weren't saved even when 3-0 up, and given Mattersburg's problems, bookies have set a slightly higher rate on his victory than would have been the case at the start of the season. This is worth a try since Mattersburg should get their form back after changing their manager, especially given their last season's squad which played in first division. Horn are in a different league entirely, their squad isn't complete and that's why the home side are more to be trusted. It's high time they started winning...
