Groningen - PSV (1:0)

Groningen threaten injury-plagued PSV

  • Published:

Groningen are much more rampant on their own ground than on the road, while PSV are plagued by injuries and have several returnees from international obligations

Most of what Groningen have done well this season has taken place at their home stadium, with only defending champions Ajax scraping through undefeated, so there is no lack of optimism ahead of the encounter with runners-up PSV. Those matches against the giants of the Dutch football always bring an extra dose of motivation, which makes Groningen's boss Erwin van de Looi confident that his players will give everything they can in an effort to overcome the opposition from Eindhoven, like they did, for example, the season before the last, with a convincing 3-0 score.

- That last game against AZ was, in my opinion, our best so far. We won, but we also showed a lot of initiative and fighting spirit - the Groningen boss pointed out. He sees a lot of similarities between his team and PSV.

- Both teams are comparable in a way. Groningen and PSV are in a transition process and they both intend to play football. PSV have good players and more rotation options than Groningen, but we have several players who have recovered, we're ready and we'll try to play like we did against AZ in our last game - the home coach is hopeful. He won't be able to count on injured midfielder Bos, defender Bakker and forward Teixeira, but the first two haven't played at all this season, while it's much more important to note that forward Zeefuik and midfielder De Leeuw are back in contention. These two have already jointly scored five goals this season.

- This will be an interesting an open match, and we are still undefeated at home, and we wan't to keep that run going. I have full confidence in my team, and we believe we can use our home advantage for another success - Erwin van de Looi concluded. The Groningen boss will employ the 4-3-3 formation, indicating that his team will dabble in no calculations, but take risks and attack as much as they can.

PSV were less than stellar in their last two games before the international break, they lost to AZ and were lucky to beat Waalwijk 2-1 at home, but what's important for the rejuvenated and injury-plagued Eindhoven team is that they are still at the top, in spite of it all. Their boss, Philip Cocu, believes that his team will keep maturing as the season progresses, improving their winning ability, and right now it is absences that give him headache the most.

The visitors are coming to Groningen without several very important players, such as midfielders Wijnaldum and Park, first-choice goalkeeper Zoet and center back Rekik, while key midfielder Schaars is uncertain to play. Cocu will need to make a lot of rotations, and several of his first-team players played for their national teams this week, which means they only got to train with the rest of the team on Wednesday or Thursday.

- Zakaria Bakkalli, Memphis Depay and Santiago Arias made debuts for their national teams and came back healthy, so there is no reason for me not to play them today as I think they will be motivated to prove themselves again. We need a full focus on this match because we want to stay close to the top until winter, and then look for opportunities to strengthen the team - PSV coach Cocu says, aware that Groningen will be aggressive and eager to perform well and triumph.

- This will be a tough away game as Groningen are much better playing at home than away, but we are ready for any challenge. We will not retreat before the home side and our goal is also to win - the PSV boss pointed out. He will also play an attacking 4-3-3 formation, but PSV have only one away win and seven goals conceded in four games this season.

PSV are definitely overrated in terms of odds offer for the Groningen match and there's little reason to believe that the Eindoven team could handle the trip to the north of the Netherlands so easily, getting back with all three points. After a radical rejuvenation and selling several of their top players last summer, PSV have been struggling this season and their only real flash of quality was beating Ajax 4-0. However, if it weren't for the Ajax goalie giving away the first goal, who knows how that match would have ended as it was an even contest up to that point, but that goal shattered the visitors' confidence while lifting the home team.

PSV had some major blunders as well, such as losing to Ludogorec in the Europa League, while in the four away games in the domestic league competition they only managed to beat minnows Den Haag by 3-2. In addition to all that, coach Cocu will field a team without several key players, such as Wijnaldum, Park and Rekik, while several players are still tired after playing for their national teams. The PSV boss himself has said that this will be one of their more difficult away games, considering that Groningen are a typical home team that knows no fear with their supporters behind them.

Groningen already have three home wins this season, as only Ajax scraped through undefeated (1-1), and coach Van de Looi can count on some key returnees up front, such as Zeefuik and De Leeuw. Their defense is their weakest department and therein lies the danger of letting in a cheap goal that could make it hard for them to come back, but our impression is still that the offered odds on the home team to stay undefeated are great value in this situation.
And now, to conclude with an anecdote. Yesterday evening, prior to writing this preview, we met an avid bettor who cursed Barcelona for not beating Osasuna, and then he revealed what he is solely looking for on our website. Quote:

- When it comes to betting, I'm only interested in the big teams in individual leagues and I only bet on their games, nothing else. So, for Netherlands I want to know whether Ajax and PSV will win or not.

There, we've accommodated his request. PSV will not win today...
