Atlanta - Tampa Bay (31:23)

The Falcons are worried about the injuries, in addition to their score

  • Published:

The home team offense will be impaired by the absences of their starting running back and best two wide receivers.

The bye week came at just the right time for the Atlanta Falcons, after three losses in a row, for the first time in coach Mike Smith's era. Only one win in five games is a major disappointment for the team that was eyeing the Super Bowl with optimism before the season. Still, they can find some reason for optimism in the fact that they lost all four games by seven points or less.

We've got to do what we've got to do to stay close as a team so we can turn this thing around. You can't moan and complain. You can't point fingers. And that's one thing we do a great job of. We've owned up to the mistakes we've made in games. Now we just have to turn the ship around - said wide receiver Harry Douglas , who caught 16 passes for 219 yards this season.

One of the league's most explosive offenses suffered a major blow when it was announced that the super-fast receiver Julio Jones will miss the rest of the season because of foot surgery. What makes it even harder for Atlanta is the fact that Roddy White has been having problems with hamstring and ankles.

White is listed as questionable today, and running back Steven Jackson is also unlikely to play, due to his hamstring injury. His replacement Jason Snelling is recovering from the concussion he suffered in the 30-28 loss to the Jets. After completing several practices successfully, Snelling is expected to join the Falcons backfield, but left tackle Sam Baker (knee) and linebackers Akeem Dent (ankle) and Sean Weatherspoon (foot) almost certainly won't play.

We're in a difficult streak with injuries right now, but I think as coaches we look at it as a challenge. No one thinks you have a chance right now, so let's try to figure out a way to get this done - offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said.

All this puts added pressure on quarterback Matt Ryan, who did his job very well this season, as confirmed by the numbers. So far he's completed 69.3% of his passes for 1649 yards, with ten touchdowns and three interceptions. With Jones out, and White hampered, if he's playing at all, Ryan will have to rely even more on the experienced tight end Tony Gonzalez, who caught 22 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns in last two games.

Injuries have had a negative impact on the defense as well, allowing 26.8 points on the average, but fortunately for them, today at Georgia Dome they are hosting a team scoring a paltry 12.8 points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have lost their first five games for the first time since 2009, when they started the season with seven losses. It wouldn't be a surprise, considering their form, if they spent some more weeks looking for a positive result.

Every team is going through their issues. We need to find a way to get it done, and that's what we need to do this week - said coach Greg Schiano, whose team lost three of the five games by four point or less.

Josh Freeman, who was fired, has been replaced for the last two weeks by the rookie Mike Glennon, who passed for 193 yards and one touchdown in his debut, along with two interceptions. He was better last week, when he threw for 273 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the 31-20 home loss to the Eagles.

Last week he couldn't count on Mike Williams, who could play in Atlanta, since he took part in some of the practices this week. Still, most of the passes will go toward Vincent Jackson, who caught 26 passes for 406 yards and two touchdowns this season. One of the reasons for the Bucs poor results is Doug Martin's lesser production, with only 3.5 yards per carry (406 in total), but part of the blame goes definitely to the offensive line, as well as weak offense by air, which means the opposing defenses could concentrate more on stopping him.

On the other side the Bucs look much better, but their job today isn't going to be easy, regardless of their opponents' problems. The Falcons have one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Matt Ryan, capable of taking advantage of his opponents' smallest mistake. Historically, the home team have won seven of their last nine games, but the Bucs can build their optimism on the fact that they won in Atlanta 22-17 on December 30 last year.

Truth be told, the Bucks have been far from impressive this season but the same could be said of the Falcons, who will miss a couple of very important players tonight, especially in offense. As accustomed as they have become to the absence of running back Stephen Jackson, replacing Roddy White and Julio Jones, some of the best receivers in the league, will be a difficult task. Thus, quarterback Matt Ryan has lost some of his best targets. In addition, the Falcons will most likely play without their left tackle Sam Baker (knee) and linebackers Akeem Dent (ankle) and Sean Weatherspoon (foot). The visiting team may not form a part of NFL elite but it is my opinion that they possess enough quality to compete with the decimated Falcons. In addition to counter-handicap, it wouldn't be a bad idea to try with the under on the home team (25,5).
