G. Dragic: Parker may score 35 points, as long as we win

  • Published:

The French were victorious here 20 days ago, but they scored a win only in the final moments of the match. Today we also expect a leveled and nervous match, while all eyes are set on G. Dragic and Parker

The final group stage standings enabled the Slovenes to play an easy match against Finland on their last day of play at the end of the second round. Knowing that they have secured second place and can't contend for the first, they were able to rest their best players and give a chance to those who'd spent less time on the court, which Maljkovic did. He gave G. Dragic only four minutes of play time, which was a logical move although Dragic joked about this at the end of the match:

- When the crowd started cheering my name, I thought to myself : Let me play Bozo! But obviously it was good to prevent any risk of injury since we play a key match of tournament on Wednesday.

The berth against France will also be a showdown between the best playmakers of the tournament. Dragic vs. Parker promise an NBA duel which will decide a lot in this match:

- France is not all about Parker, they're one of the favorites for the title and they have a lot of other fantastic players, most of whom are NBA players. As far as I'm concerned, Parker can score 35 points, as long as we stop the others and win. If we show the fighting spirit, play good defense and lose as few balls as possible, we've nothing to fear.

Dragic also stressed an important tactical fact:

- We'll have to keep narrow in defense and close the space under the racket because they have excellent penetration. We can use the same recipe we used against the Greeks, when we played an excellent defense. We also have to block them out on rebounds, which we've been good at so far.

This means we might see a lot of zone defense, which will force the French to make outer shots and this is usually a weaker spot in athletically powerful teams. Slovenia had a chance to get a feel for all this in their final friendly match before Eurobasket when they hosted France here in Ljubljana. Bozo Maljkovic's players had a lead for most part of the match, but they squandered it away losing balls in the final five minutes of the match.

- We mustn't allow this to happen today and we have to be very organized in the offense. We know they're a team who jump and run well and we mustn't be drawn into their game - Maljkovic said.

What we're definitely going to see is an extremely aggressive defense on both sides. Given the ball will be handled by NBA playmakers Parker and G. Dragic, we can expect plenty of counterattacks as well. This is exactly what a celebrated Slovene basketball player Peter Vilfan hopes for:

- We can't score a win today without scoring at least 15-20 counterattack points. So, the aggressive defense we've had so far followed by fast counterattacks.

This seems to be the only logical tactics as the French have an extremely aggressive defense setup. With Ajinco under the racket, Dragic and company will have a tough job penetrating, which is their biggest, if not the only, weapon in the offense. So far, the outer shot and play against zone defense have proved to be an open wound for the Slovenes.

The French have disappointed at the tournament so far, to put it mildly. Their level of game has been low, which was obvious in their last match against Serbia. Duda Ivkovic beat Parker, Batum and Diaw with Micic, N. Krstic, Kalinic, Gagic and Stimac on the court, a team of inexperienced players even in ABA terms.

Tony Parker was right when he said that the tournament starts today and everything that happened before becomes irrelevant. The French know they need to play much, much better.

- Our defense suffers, we miss communication. I'm not sure if it's down to motivation, but I know that we have to do a lot better. Even against Latvia when we scored 100 points, we received 60 points in one half-time. Gosh, 60 - Nicholas Batum, a hot and cold player, said.

Before Eurobasket, they played their last match against the Slovenes here in Stozice, winning 70-65. This wasn't an irrelevant match; both teams gave their maximum and the French were taken to the win on the wings of Alexis Ajinco, who dominated under the racket (17 points). Parker scored 14 points, but they had a poor shot efficiency from play (-3/10).

On the other hand, Dragic scored 18 points, and we expect to see him play aggressively today. It's almost certain he won't be guarded by Parker. Collet will be looking for his guard among Batum, De Colo and Diot, depending on who on the court at the time.

- We mustn't become loose and have to remain aggressive. This will be the key as they're the most aggressive team in the tournament, and whoever fails to resist, they lose - the French selector said.

Parker went even further comparing the Slovenes with Team USA, but only in one segment.

- They're fast and our first job is to stop them from running. Remain concentrated, not paying attention to provocations from the audience, even judges, then control our defensive jumps - the Spurs playmaker said before today's match.

It is obvious this will be a clash between Dragic and Parker, and by their own statements we should expect it to be even more aggressive.

- I feel I haven't been aggressive enough, not even against Serbia. Perhaps I've been too patient, waiting for a player to come to me.

Bozo Maljkovic will certainly have his specialist Joksimovic ready, who did a great job on Belinelli and Spanoulis. The aim is to be aggressive on Parker. He's difficult to stop, but at least he can be tired out.

Boris Diaw Player total points 10 tip: Under   Iguodala
Odds Stake Min. odds Last margin Bookmaker
1.80 6/10 1.65 8 Unibet
This margin is based on Diaw's last two games, against Serbia and Latvia, when he scored 12 and 16 points. The fact is that this is Diaw's best tournament in terms of efficiency. For example, two years ago in Lithuania he was on an average of 8 points (semifinals against Russia 6, quarterfinals against Greece 0). France need him above all as a player that connects the backcourt and front court, a very intelligent player who is not forcing too much. Today everything will be around Parker who is expected to be more aggressive. Batum also owes a lot and DIaw is here to give a few assists and contribute in rebounds. In a friendly match against Slovenia 20 days ago he scored 2 in 30 minutes. Slovenians are pretty 'tall' in the paint and Diaw will have trouble getting into clean situations and his mid-range shot is not as reliable as it used to be.
