NY Mets - Milwaukee (2:4)

Mets' superb starter wants a strong finish to the season

  • Published:

The Mets are in a very good form. Everything seems to be working well in their camp, and they won seven times in their last ten games. The victory in Cincinnati was especially important as they were the underdogs in that set, but managed to get away with two wins.

A game of no special significance will be played in New York in the final series of the season. The NY Mets (73-85) made life hard last night for the Cincinnati Reds, who were looking for some vital wins, but the Mets didn't care and beat them twice in a three-game set. They won five times in their last six games and seven times in the last ten. They averaged 3.38 runs per game in that period, and their pitchers' ERA was 2.69 in the same interval.

The Milwaukee Brewers (71-81) have once again let their fans down this season, but their players' form is not to be blamed as much as some other circumstances. Outfielder Corey Hart was out of contention for the entire season, their best hitter is suspended and has struggled with injuries throughout the season, while Rickie Weeks, who has carried this team on his shoulders for years, had a horrible season and got injured in the end. All this has affected a team which has major potential, but they were unable to tap into it this season, and now they are simply waiting for this one to end so they can move on.

The home team will rely on their in-form pitcher Dillon Gee (12-10; 3.54 ERA), who could hit the 200-inning mark in this set. Gee has turned his situation around in a big way this season, and it all started at the Yankees, where he pitched 12 strikeouts. Since then, he is 10-4 with 2.73 ERA.

- It means a lot. One of the main goals, especially coming off an injury, was to hit that 200-inning mark. I haven't been there yet - Gee explained.

This will be his last start of the season, and there is no doubt that his motivation will once again be enormous, which is why we can expect an excellent performance from him and a lot of trouble for the Brewers' offense. He is 5-2 in the last ten games with 2.49 ERA, while he has a 2.49 ERA at the Citi Field. Against the Brewers he is 0-2, but only four batters from the current Brewers' roster have seen him.

The visitors will hand the ball to Johnny Helweg (1-4; 7.43 ERA), who continues with his disappointing displays. In his last start, against St. Louis, he limited the damage to two runs in five innings, but he had plenty of luck as he walked five batters. He started seven games this season, allowing three or more runs on five occasions.

I wasn't very efficient, but just effective enough to keep us there through five. It's going to help me going into my next start - Helweg said after starting against St. Louis at Miller Park.

Helweg has had one start against the Mets in his career, and it was rather turbulent. He spent only 3.2 innings on the mound, allowing three runs and walking five batters. He has three starts on the road, in which he allowed nine runs in total.

Dillon Gee has a huge motive in his last start of the season, and that is to finish it in style and break the barrier of 200 pitched innings for the first time in his career. Gee has made a huge turnaround this season, which began with the New York Yankees when he overturned 12 strikeouts, and has had a 10-4 ratio with 2.73 ERA. In the last ten games he has had a 5-2 with a 2.49 ERA ratio, while at Citi Field he recorded a 2.49 ERA. Against the Brewers he has a 0-2 ratio in his career, but only four batters from the current roster of Brewers saw this. This bet is based on another very important information, and that is the Brewers' injury list. In addition to being a long time without their best hitter and two other leading ones, they were left without their backbone Aramis Ramirez who injured his knee again and will not be returning until the end of the season. They also lost a striker Jean Segur who has the best hitting average .
