Adrian Mannarino - Roger Federer (4:6 2:6)

Federer: I shouldn't have played some tournaments this year because of my back

  • Published:

Rarely does the great Swiss admit he's made a mistake, but he admitted he played some tournaments even tough he shouldn't have this season. He want to reach his eight concesutive final in Basel, Mannarino's game is good enough indoors, but Federer is at a completely different level

Playing home is not as big an advantage in tennis as it is in other sports, but Basel has been Federer's oasis for years. He reached finals last seven times he played here and won five titles. That's something you don't get to see that often in Series 500 tournaments. He can be happy because none of the Top 4 players are here, but he is, on the other hand, not among the top two seeds anyway. He's currently holding ATP position 7, and he decided to make some changes at the very end of the season - he's no longer working with coach Annacon.

- We started off with a three-year-plan of winning a Grand Slam title and reclaiming the first position. We reached the objectives, but decided to part ways now - said Federer.

The media are questioning Federer's current motivation since he's never been in this kind of situation. They're wondering if there's any left to keep him going. Is this a desperate attempt to change something or a decision that can make a difference. Annacone is not questioning his motivation, on the contrary:

- Roger is not panicking. We just returned from two week training session in Dubai. He simply loves tennis. I was struggling on the court when doing nothing, and he is just laughing, and working with so much enthusiasm you wouldn't believe it. He's never panicking, nor he ever criticized me or the other people he works with because of his defeats.

We are inclined to believe him - he did just get fired. Federer isn't trying to hide the fact he's made mistakes, but blames only himself for it. He's never forfeited a match in his life, but he realizes he should have skipped some tournaments. Indian Wells, Hamburg, and Gstaad especially:

- In hindsight, I shouldn't have played those tournaments, my back was not fit for it.

Mannarino's experiences with Federer are not good. It's not surprising, but not winning more than three games in any of the eight sets played calls for concern. Especially since they played on a faster surface, and Mannarino's game is good in those conditions. He can't be happy with his recent matches either, he was knocked out in the first round in two out of the last three tournaments, despite having favorable draws.

He was defeated badly to Federer two years ago. He claimed to have been too impressed, but he obviously didn't learn his lesson - he lost in New York this year without even putting up a fight:

- I was far below his level, and had no options. First set was good to some extent, but he forced me too take too much risk. I lack experience against the best players, his game is too fast for me.

Federer can be happy with a slightly better game he displayed in Shanghai, but he's aware that repeating the success from 2011 when he won the three final tournaments of the season (London included), will be difficult. He didn't even book his place in London yet:

- I am physically and mentally fit for the last 15 matches this season, but I'm not sure my game is good enough for three titles.

Federer's problems are well known, but here he could hardly have had a better draw at the opening of the hometown tournament. He played Mannarin three times, twice in Grand Slams and the Frenchman never won more than three games in a set. It's eight sets, which means a representative pattern. The Frenchman has too much respect for the Swiss, admitting himself that his play is too fast for him. That respect will be even greater today in a packed hall, and I do believe Federer yearns for a good start to get the critics off his back. This can go with a break per set, which makes the bet quite certain and so the stake is higher. For 4/10 a limit half a game lower can be taken.
