Jurgen Zopp - Pablo Carreno-Busta (5:5) forf.

Zopp asks for protected ranking for his favourite tournament

  • Published:

Carreno has had an excellent season, but will have to play well indoors as well. He played only eight indoor matches so far, winning just two.

Zopp has been one of biggest over-performers of the last season's indoor tour. Tricky Estonian player won a challenger tournament and recorded two ATP wins this time last year, affirming himself in the Top 100. On the downside, he then suffered the worst injury of his career, putting him out of the most of this season.

Due to back problems, he missed the last few challengers of the last season and whole five months of this season. Of course, his ranking plummeted because of that, making him almost have to start from the scratch. His task was harder as it was the clay season, something he really doesn't enjoy, so he had to wait for the late July to record his first big result of the season - a semi-final of a challenger. He started playing his best in the hard court season, immediately impressing at Petange, winning against a couple of good opponents, reaching the semi.

- I have a difficult period of my career behind me. I am back after a serious injury and I am well aware I'll have to prove myself all over again - the Estonian spoke after winning his first ATP match of the season at St. Petersburg Open.

He impressed winning a set against Gulbis in the next match, but took a three-week break after the defeat. He returned to action in Rennes the last week, somewhat disappointing. Zopp successfully got through qualifiers, only to lose to the 19 year-old Belgian Coppejans in the first round.

The Estonian's next challenge will be this tournament, one of his favourites. He played his first ATP match here two seasons ago, winning his first ATP match the next season. These are one of the reasons he asked for protected ranking for this season's tournament.

He'll play against Carreno Busta in the first round. The young, 22 year-old Spaniard has made a huge impact at this season's challengers. He made a huge improvement this season - making an almost incredible leap from below 600 to almost Top 50 in the ranking. His development and dominance was evident in both the futures tournaments (39-1 score), as well as the challengers, scoring the impressive 34-8 and winning four tournaments.

That alone was enough for Top 100 ranking, but he started proving himself at ATP tournaments, where he still holds a positive score (6-5). He earned his ATP tournament spot, but there is a problem for him with the remaining tournaments.

Despite playing in different condition throughout of his career, the Spaniard has played only eight indoor matches so far, winning only two. He simply didn't have the chance and the need to play in such tournaments, so now he faces a daunting task.

He started off well, winning a match in Kuala Lumpur recently, but lost to Tursunov immediately after. His next challenge came at the fast court of Shanghai, but lost to Lorenzi in the qualifiers, so we can say he under-performed.

I think that the playing surface will determine the winner in this match. This tournament is undoubtedly Zopp's favourite venue, and he therefore asked for protected ranking so he could enter the main draw straight away. He played his first ATP match here, and won his first ATP match here as well - so he certainly enjoys this fast court at this indoor tournament. Carreno, on the other hand, has had a great season so far, but still has to prove himself indoors. He did win a match in Kuala Lumpur recently, but that was against "headless" Bogomolov. Overall, it was Carreno's only second indoor win yet, so I think he'll have to work on that aspect of the game. Zopp has played some of his best matches indoors, so I think he'll use his aggressive play and great serve well and win this one.
