Besiktas - Turk Telekom (83:80)

Besiktas feel comfortable at home

  • Published:

Yagizer Ulug's team won five straight home games, and they easily defeated today's opponents away in their first head-to-head game. With the domination in the paint and great performances by Wolters and Lampe

Besiktas faced Karshiyaka with the weight of the fact that their last away win was on December 7th, and that hasn't changed at Karshiyaka either. They suffered their 9th straight away defeat, but they always found comfort at home after away defeats since mid-December. The same happened against Yesil Giresun against whom they earned their fifth straight home win.

Besiktas were down by double digits at Demir Buyukcekmece and Pinar Karshiyaka, and they vented their frustrations the same way against Yeshil:

- We improved our defense in the second half, and we established the pace we wanted. In the first half our opponents stopped us from finding it, they slowed the game down. In the second half we imposed more pressure - said coach Yagzier Ulug.

It did not look good after the first half, they were down 33-39, but they completely improved in the second half. They won that period 54-29, and they were especially impressive in the last 10 inutes (31-13). And since we're talking about impressive, Lampe scored 19 (8/12) with 11 rebounds, and Ulug got a lot from Culpepper (17 p) and Wolters (17 p, 6 rb, 7 a).

Besiktas have a slightly better schedule ahead of them. They are playing another home game, after that they will face bottom-placed Istanbul, and after that await Trabzon at home. This is a chance for them to completely join the play-off battle. Wolters, Atsur and Lampe missed a practice at the start of the week, but they worked normally after that so we can assume they just got some rest, which Lampe and Wolters could use. They got spent a lot against Yesil.

Turk Telekom already lost to Besiktas, and at home. They were still led by Henrik Dettmann then and it was one of the rare good defensive performances at that time. They were dominant throughout all 40 minutes, and Lampe (18pt, 9rb), Wolters (12pt, 5 rb, 10as) and Atsur (15p) were an unsolvable enigma. In comparison to that game. Seeley, Murphy and Radosevic are not here, but Hamilton returned in the meantime and they acquired Elonu and Culpepper.

Turk Telekom were in a good form in general until last round. We said in general because in their four game winning run, three were in weak Fiba Europe Cup and in the league they defeated Demir Buyukcekmece. A little stronger opponents and the winning run was over. Hakan Demir's team lost at home to defending champions Karshiyaka, in an even game in which Telekom were always slightly behind their opponents, but at the same time they didn't let them take a big lead. It ended that way, with a decent defeat.

The problem is that Telekom cannot afford to lose right now, because they are second-to-last at the league table and a win is worth gold right now. They had problems with control of defensive rebounds against Pinar, the champions have caught 14 offensive rebounds, and in the attack they were often forced to make back-court shots because they lacked better ideas.

They shot nine more three pointers than they had shots for two pointers, and they finished with low percentages in both of those categories. Even those player who were in double digits (Woodside, Jenkins, Haislip) had spent too many balls, this trio shot 12/34 combined. If we know that Turk are a team that primarily depends on attacking efficiency, then they cannot defeat opponents who are weaker than Pinar with such performanecs.

In the first game against Besiktas they had problems in similar segments in which they had problems against Pinar in the last round. They lost rebounds 41-25, had weaker shot percentage, and even though they had not shot a lot of three pointers, 2/13 shots says enough for itself.

In comparison to that game, Telekom no longer have in their ranks Brown and Savovic, but they have Harris, Rasic and Haislip, so the quality is similar, and they may even be slightly better because of Haislip who will face Lampe today and that will be interesting to watch because both of them can score from the paint and from the back-court.

Possible win would be great for Telekom, because after this, they have two home games against direct rivals, Yeshil and Istanbul, so a run of three wins could improve their situation and get them away from the bottom.
