Juventus - Napoli (1:0)

Derby match to decide who takes top table

  • Published:

Juventus are on a 14-game winning run, Napoli won the last 8

The Juventus Arena is set to host the big Italian derby tonight. The stadium has been sold out a long time ago since this is the first chance for Juventus to take top table this season. Following a poor start, Allegri's team went on a record-breaking 14-game winning run in Serie A. Buffon has not conceded a single goal in the last dive games. Juventus have been doing brilliantly the past few months, adding a Cup semifinal win over Inter to the list of their wins in the league. Allegri's team is set to face Bayern in Champions League Round of 18 first-leg game some 10 days from now. However, the minds in Turin are not set on that game yet since they are now facing one of the most important Serie A meetings.

Allegri wants to take the pressure off his team ahead of the Napoli game:

- To be honest, I have not prepared the game yet. We're playing tomorrow so we still have more than enough time. Napoli are doing great in the championship, they have 56 points and showing their quality. We are still in line with last season's results as we're only 3 points short of the record exactly one year ago. The defeat from the first head-to-head is what sets us apart at the moment. This will surely be a good game tactically and technically but that doesn't mean it will be crucial. There are 13 games left to go, which means there are still 39 points left up for grabs.

Juventus usually go with the 3-5-1 formation this season but the key center back Chiellini is injured, which could change the lineup into 4-4-2. Defenders Asamoah and Caceres, midfielder Khedira and forward Mandzukic all struggled with injuries as well. The increasingly better Morata should take the striker position alongside Dybala. We have to see whether Evra or Alex Sandro will start at left back position and whether Cuardado or Pereyra will start in midfield.

Napoli have been sailing through Serie A the last few months just like their opponents from Turin. Napoli are on an 8-game winning run. Sarri's team has by far the best offense in the league, lead by the unstoppable Higuain, who averages a goal per game. Napoli struggled against danger zone Carpi in the last round to get some help from the refs and end up winning. Carpi's Bianco was first sent off for no reason and Napoli were awarded a penalty later on.

Sarri hopes Napoli will stay in the top spot after the derby match:

- Is this more my Napoli or Allegri's Juventus? There will always be a bit of Conta at Juventus and Benitez at Napoli. Allegri's been doing a great job in Turin. This is not just another game for our fans. Juventus' experience can have a role in this game but there are others things involved as well. If experience was the only important thing, Gigi Riva would still be playing. We have to focus on the ball more than on physical game that suits them more.

The visiors from Napoli will be only without midfielder Grassi, who got injured right after joining the team from Atlanta. Sarri will go with the usual 4-3-3 formation and the usual starting 11 tonight.
