Athletic are in fine form but they will be without a few important players in Madrid

Real once again weren't doing brilliantly away but a late goal by Luka Modric saw them get three points in Granada and stay more or less close to top table Barcelona and their city rivals Atletico. 

Real mostly played weaker opponents since Zidane took over but he is now to face the greatest challenge yet:

- Athletic are a powerful team. I have a great deal of respect for them. What's the most important thing? Doing our best, being able to look in the mirror after the game. There is no perfection in football but we definitely need to bring the bad periods to a minimum.

Gareth Bale was expected to maybe make a comeback today but the coach said:

- Gareth won't be on the team for as long as he's not at 100%. He's an extremely important player for us and there is no point in taking any chances by sending him back too soon. 

Injured defenders Marcelo and Pepe won't be at Zidane's disposal either. Athletic will come to the capital after playing a draw with Villareal last round. That saw them stay quite far from positions leading into Champions league. The Basque team is in fine form and they are still in spots leading into Europe. However, the biggest European competition is further away each next round. 

- The draw was the fairest outcome of the Villareal game. Sadly, it wasn't the best outcome for us. We are far from Champions League but there are still 45 points left until the end of this season. We have no intention of giving up. We are in for a tough task but we'll do our best. The game in Madrid will show us where we really are. It's one of the toughest road games in Spain - coach Valverde said. 

Things are far from ideal when it comes to the list of players set to miss this game. Raul Garcia and Ibai Gomez are out with injuries, defender Mikel San JOse and forward Williams with suspensions. Center backs Xabier Etxeita and winger Susaeta were questionable during the week. it was confirmed yesterday that Susaeta won't be on the team.
