Knocking out Feyenoord boosted Heerenveen confidence

Vitesse seem to be the favorite at first in Europa League playoffs final but they have only one win in the last 11 head-to-head games against Heerenveen. A win over Feyenoord in the previous playoff round makes them very confident about this first leg game that will be played at their stadium

Heerenveen and Vitesse from Anhem are to play the first leg game of Europa League playoffs final today. The second leg is scheduled for Sunday. Both teams have advanced from the semifinals by playing a good and confident game even though each team won only one game while the second leg in both cases finished as a draw. 

Heerenveen first beat Feyenoord 1-0 in semifinals first leg and than lost 0-1 in Rotterdam in the second leg. But they manged to make a comeback in extra time when their top scorer Uth netted two goals. One other goal Feyenoord managed to score didn't ruin the day for Heerenveen and they advanced into finals. 

Dwight Lodeweges's team thus took advantage of the crisis Feyenoord are dealing with in the final part of the season. But they are now to take on Vitesse, a team that has been doing brilliantly for the past two-three months. Vitesse are even more confident than their opponent which means Heerenveen will probably use the same tactics from the first leg against Feyenoord. The main goal will be not to concede any goals home while in Vitesse, they will try and create attempts and score if possible. 

- The fact we knocked out Feyenoord gives us extra strength for the Vitesse game. We did 120 minutes in Rotterdam on Sunday. but I don't think that made us tired. A result like that can do wonders for the team. It creates power and we now believe that we an beat Vitesse as well even though we know that each and every player has to do his best and that we cannot have a single weak link on the squad - Heerenveen coach Lodeweges said. Center back Van Aken and midfielder Therm, who scored the winning goal against Feyenoord in the first leg game) are questionable for this game and even though both want to play, the medical team will make the final decision later today. Defender Buijs has been out for a while now.

- We are being given the role of the underdog again but Vitesse are not Barcelona and there's no reason to fear them. They are in form, we have respect for them and they have excellent offensive midfielders but I think they are very vulnerable in defense, which is something we'll try and take advantage of. We'll try and take any lead ahead of the second leg game - home team's coach Lodeweges said. The Abe Lenstra stadium that can accommodate some 27 thousand people is sold out.

Vitesse lived up to their role of favorite against Zwolle in semifinals even though Zwolle pretty much beat themselves through all the mistakes in defense that helped Vitesse scored all of the goals.

But Vitesse had higher possession in both games, they were creating attempts and once again proved they are the kind of a team that always plays an offense-oriented game and the one any player can score. Will that be their approach in Heerenveen today? We have to wait and see but there's no reason to doubt they will try and score at least one away goal that would make their task in the second leg much easier, regardless of the final score today.

- It's season end and the time has come to either take the final prize or not take it. We have been consistent over the past three months and I think we're in good shape physically as well even though Heereneen are very powerful in that aspect as well - visiting coach Bosz said. His Equatorian winger Ibarra won't be able to help him today but everyone else is at his disposal.

- We didn't beat Hereenveen this season but I don't think those two games have to mean a lot. I think the home team will be more defense-oriented especially because they are good in counter-attacking, as the Feyenoord games proved. We are bursting with confidence though and we'll try and build our game as always, which should result in a good score. A good final score today for us is anything but a defeat - coach Bosz said.

When it comes to head-to-head games, we have to say that in every one of the last 11 of those each team scored at least a goal. Vitesse have only one win in 11 games, while Heerenveen recorded 4. They were very convincing home this season when they won 4-1 on January 24. 

But Vitesse made massive progress after that to win 12 out of the last 17 games and recorded a single defeat - 0-1 on April in the Hague.
