Reggio Emilia - Brindisi (86:62)

The stakes are high and the chances equal for each team

  • Published:

The result is 2-2 ahead of this game. Each team won once home and once away and the smallest details will decide this game

Reggiana were defeated home in one of the most important games of the season after 15 straight home wins to then allow Brindisi to make a comeback after being 8 points shorts in the next game away. That got them extremely close of being knocked out. They went on to play the fourth game of the series and showed character. It was a very good performance by Reggiana as they were in the lead for the most part of the game to win 73-62 in the end.

The calmness Reggiana had while playing such an important game is awe-inspiring. They were calm and collected throughout the game while taking advantage of nervousness at Brindisi. The only bad period for them was third quarter when they allowed Brindisi to make up for the 10-point deficit and even take a 1-point lead. But Reggiana responded promptly, taking the lead again and not allowing the home team to get even close until the end.

- We played an amazing game. We were very confident and aware of the kind of a situation we were in - coach Menetti said. He praised Kaukenas' performance in particular:

- He is teaching his teammates new things each next game.

There is no doubt that Kaukenas brings a lot of experience to the team together with his compatriot Lavrinovic. He scored 10 out of his 16 points n the third quarter when Reggiana took the crucial lead. Lavrinovic managed to score 11 points in only 14 minutes. His average of 16 points in only 17 minutes throughout this series speaks volumes of his efficiency.

Reggiana now have the final crucial step to take. That won't be easy because Brindisi are physically a bit more powerful, which shows when Reggiana are attacking as they recorded only 14 assists in the last 2 games.

- We now need to go over our limits - coach Menetti said.

Brindisi will definitely feel bad about missing out on the match point. The main reason they lost is inexperience because they were lacking rhythm all throughout the match and nervousness on their part was almost tangible. Denmon failed once again after doing brilliantly in Game 3 and scored only 7 points (2-for-9). James scored only 2 points (0-for-3). Pullen added 10 points, Mays 12 while Zerini (12p) and Turner (11p) helped a lot from the bench.

- It's the beauty and the ugliness of the playoffs. You can either win or lose but we now have Game 5 to play and we have to open it with new enthusiasms and faith in ourselves. We failed to deal with the pressure properly and we were very nervous from the start - coach Bucchi admitted but added that they want a win in Regio Emilia:

- Reggiana are a well-experienced team that aims for Euroleague. But they will be under pressure now. We won away many times this season and we are not afraid of anything.

The visiting coach is definitely aware of the chance that they are being presented with since his team was put up a good fight, being an opponent of equal quality in all 4 games. They are probably still lamenting the first game in which they had a 32-point lead. But if they managed to bounce back after that to win Game 2, Bridisi then definitely stand a good chance today.

Defensive ends have played the key role in this series. The games finish with an average of only 139 points, with Reggiana finishing with one point more than Bridisi on average. The home team will need Diener to be productive today. He's been more or less invisible in this series, recording two-point efficiency of 35% and three point shooting of 19%. This is what he said about his bad performances:

- I cannot find rhythm because I'm not taking as many shots as I have at Sassari. I'm physically fit I just need to get my shooting up - Diener said and then turned to this game:

- Mays is their key player. He forces the opponents into a lot of faults and often has two players guarding him. Great shooters Denmon, Pullen an Turner and always around him. The pressure will be huge but we cannot succumb to it. We need to be mentally tough like we were so far.
