A direct clash for a spot in semifinals

The winner of this match will play semifinals tomorrow. Russia are here with a B team, China with their U23 players. The Chinese are better rested, seem to be working better together and will be pressure-free

The last game on the final group stage day offers the most interesting match. This is a direct battle for a spot in semifinals. The Netherlands have already secured it and the winner of this match is to get a spot in it as well. Both teams beat the Dominican Republic and both lost to the Netherlands.

Russia, who sent their B team to Switzerland lost to the Netherlands yesterday 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-22) after playing a match full of ups and downs. But that was all expected since this team did only some 10 practice sessions together. The match against the Dutch was only their 2nd match. The first two sets were a pretty close battle but the Netherlands dominated the second half of the match.

Blocking is the best element in Russia's game and they should probably be able to do that better today. They were pretty vulnerable at reception yesterday and coach Pankov did some reshuffling to save some power for this important game. Bavykina was the best Russian on the floor with 19 points yesterday.

China had a day off yesterday which is why they are better rested ahead of this match. This will be the third game in three days for Russia and they did the initial preparation for European Games before that too. Fatigue can therefore play an important role today. China sent their U23 team to Montreux Masters and recorded a surprising first round win over the Dominikan Republic.

Game two saw them lose to the Netherlands. We can say it was an expected loss in straight sets but the Chinese put up a good fight. They lost the second and the third set after a close race but the Dutch were more focused in the end. They used the greater experience to beat the young Chinese team.

There is no doubt about this China working better together than Russia and that will be their upper hand today. They played the Asian U23 championship early this month, they make very little mistakes, have well organized and prepared attacks and have a very good Liu Yanh, who is their top player. Also, they are under no pressure to record good result here and making it into semifinals would be great. Russia won't have it easy as they try and reach semifinals today.
