Bayern Munich - Alba Berlin (85:73)

The Bavarians against the Berlin wall

  • Published:

Even though Bayern and Alba have the best offenses in the Bundesliga, four of their five matches this season showed tough defenses. In the first match of the semifinal, the Berliners really crushed Bayern, limiting them to 55 points

Bayern score close to 90 points per match in Bundesliga, and it's clear that they can't hope for a good outcome when they score 55. That happened to the Bavarians in Berlin this Sunday. Alba were extremely aggressive defensively from the start, disabling Bayern's pick game, so they only managed to make a few fastbacks. It was all down to the individual attempts. Đedović scored 13, but wasn't brilliant when it came to the shots, and he scored most of them when the result was already obvious. The center Bryant seemed ridiculous at times, he was completely powerless in the paint, and so was Savanović. Gavel, Taylor, Micić... none of them did anything, really.

- Alba deserved the win. We couldn't do anything we planned out there. It was like my players have forgotten the basics. We were disastrous with the rebounds, and that segment is crucial for the rhythm and the development of the match - coach Svetislav Pešić concluded.

The only thing the Bavarians can rely on now is the home court. They only got two defeats in their Audi Dome this season. They lost to Alba four times in Berlin this season, but beat them in a thriller home match by the end of April, leaving them under 70 points.

The experienced Pešić didn't deal with Alba too much before the second match. He's aware that his team have to improve their game significantly:

- There are no tricks, only hard work and discipline. We looked like a junior team in the first match, we were naive. Still, we're experienced enough to quickly forget that match. The key will be in improving the rebound game and make better offensive decisions. I'm 100% convinced that my guys will find a way to deal with Alba, to play as our fans expect us to.

Alba played an almost perfect defense in the first semifinal match. They looked like an elastic wall that the opponent couldn't get through. Even though the point guard Renfroe, their best scorer lately, only had 3/12 shots, Redding stepped up, dealt with the one-on-one situations with Đedović and Taylor. Redding scored 6/7 for 14 points, added 5 assists and 6 rebounds. The wing center McLean did a terrific job in the defense, and managed to score 14 points in 19 minutes he spent on the court (6/6 shot). The Berliners showed much bigger offensive width than their opponents, they seemed like a true team, as their coach Saša Obradović thinks:

- Every player did his job, defensively first of all. It was a team win. It feels great to leave a team as great as them at only 55 points. But, we don't have time to celebrate. Bayern showed how quickly they can recover from a defeat this season, like against Brose in the Eurocup or Frankfurt in the quarterfinal.

Alba don't have any defeats in the playoff, but in eight away matches played in Munchen, they left the court as winners only twice, never in the playoff in the four duels.

- Everything can go wrong. Bayern will definitely play more aggressively, and we have to reply to that like we did on Sunday. We have to use the momentum... We're ready for anything, they can hardly surprise us - Obradović added.

Even though Bayern and Alba have the best offenses in the Bundesliga, four out of five matches they played this season were marked with extremely firm defenses. In Berlin, in November last year, when they were focused on the European competitions, you could still see a great looking basketball. In the other four duels, whoever would leave the opponent under 70 points would win. The Bavarian faced the Alba's wall on Sunday, couldn't match it with their firmness, and they didn't have a plan B. Pushing the ball to Bryant or Savanović didn't go well. Alba's faster centers completely neutralized the opponent's main tall players, and the Bavarians' back line didn't have a good day. It's hard to expect Bayern to have such a weak back shot in the second duel, but we shouldn't expect the Berliners to make a big turnaround, either, or that they would give up their aggressiveness.

Bayern have to do the same. Besides, their only win against Alba was in a match where Alba stayed under 70 points. Pešić will definitely make some changes defensively. You could see that Savanović was no match for McLean, and Taylor and Đedović had a really hard time guarding Redding.
