Dnipro - Sevilla (2:3)

Sevilla are the favorite but Dnipro have already messed with plans of a number of favorites

  • Published:

Dnipro can win a trophy for the first time ever today. On the other hand, this would have been the 4th Europa League trophy for Sevilla in 9 years, which would make them the most successful team in the history of this cometition

It would probably be tough to find a single Dnipro fan who believed his team would get this far at season start. They struggled against Hajduk from Croatia in the qualifying round and then advanced past the group stage with a lot of luck. But following the winter break Markevych's team started doing much better, with their defense lead by the brilliant goal keeper Boyko being particularly impressive. Dnipro managed to knock out favorites and mighty teams like Ajax, Olympiacos, Club Brugge and Napoli on their road to the finals. They made it to the final game deservedly and now take on the defending champions Sevilla. Dnipro lost the Cup final game and the runner up spot in the league very late in the season but that's no surprised since they are completely focused on Europa League final that could see them reach the greatest achievement in club history.

Coach Markevych admitted that he didn't think his team can make it this far either:

- I couldn't imagine us getting this far but when you start eating your appetite only grows. I would lie to tell you that the boys aren't nervous but it's very important they forget about the nervousness once the game kicks off. I think Napoli are a lot like Sevilla, which could help us a lot. They can create many attempts but our defense is at a very high level and we need to neutralize them.

Midfielder Fedorchuk hopes for the support of Polish fans in Warsaw:

- The club payed for the tickets and partly for the travelling costs for our fans. We want them to stay positive. I hope that the Polish fans give us their support as well, they are our neighbors after all. I hope our style would make them happy. We expect an exciting final and we dream of lifting the trophy.

Dnipro will have to do the final game without Roman Zozulya and Sergiy Kravchenko (injuries) while Shakov might not play for the same reason. It is assumed Markevych will go with the same starting 11 that beat Napoli in the second leg game of Europa League semifinals, which means the Croatian forward Kalinic would start on the bench while Selezhnyov takes on the striker position in the 4-2-3-1 tactical formation.

Sevilla won the Europa League trophy last season and then went on to let half of their players go. The expectations for this season weren't high but coach Unai Emery still managed to create a powerful team with what he had at his disposal. As the season advanced, Sevilla's ambition grew higher. Their main goal in the end was Champions League qualification. Sevilla have had two chances of getting in CL group stage. In spite of great performances in the Spanish championship Sevilla finished one point short of Valencia (in spot 4) and therefore missed out on the first chance. The second chance for making it into CL is this Europa League final against Dnipro, in which the Andalusian team are a heavy favorite.

The media put Sevilla in the role of the favorite but Unai Emery expects a close match:

- 90 minutes will be played today and anything can happen since it's only one game. Even the smallest things can turn out crucial in a final like this one. I expect a close game in which we need to be fully focused to let our quality prevail and in order for the aforementioned smallest things to go in our favor. Dnipro are a very well-organized team whose greatest characteristic is extremely tough defense. They also know how to keep possession and be dangerous in offense. All of that suggests we're in for a very tough task.

The Ukrainian football is just a huge question mark for most Spaniards but Emery had a great inoformer Juande Ramos, who used to coach both Sevilla and Dnipro:

- I've studied Dnipro in detail. Juande Ramos helped me with it as well as his old assistants Marcos Alvarez and Juan Muniz. Our goal was to find everything there is to know about them and since the three of them were there up until recently, they were definitely a great source of information.

Sevilla won Europa League three times in the last 9 years. A fourth title would make them Europa League's most successful team which serves Emery as a great motivator:

- The final and the trophy itself is motivating, together with the Champions League qualification. But of course, the greatest motivation is the idea of making history. It's a big chance but also a big responsibility. Europa League is a great competition that only grows each next year but we want to take that next step and play Champions League next season.

Emery has almost no injury-struggles ahead of this final. The only significant player he can't count on today is center back Pareja, who's been out for about a month now. Sebastian Cristoforo and third choice goal keeper Barbosa are out as well but the team has gone without them for a very long time now and their absence is no problem.
