Efes Pilsen - Real Madrid (63:76)

Efes' reboundning dominance turning the series into a drama

  • Published:

Saric had 15 rebounds in the third game (4 of them on the offensive end), which is as what Madrid had in total

Efes surprisingly managed to extend this series even though everyone expected Real to put an end to it after two lucky wins in Madrid. But, it didn't happen and Efes proved they can put up a good fight against Madrid and that their game does not suit the Spanish side. The only one who is failing to see that is Real's coach Laso, who again spoke about the lack of luck after the game:

- We managed to make a comeback after lagging behind in the last quarter but luck abandoned us and  we lost when they scored to beat the buzzer. We need to forget about that and turn to Game 4.

Real should do exactly the opposite and instead of forgetting take a look exactly why they lost. Judging by the quality they have on the team, the defeat never should have happened but Efes made the key difference in rebounding, thanks to Dario Sari who recorded staggering 15 rebounds, four of which were offensive. The whole team from Madrid had 15 rebounds combined.

We said before that Real cannot develop their game without rebounding and that proved to be true once again. Without Bourousis and with Mejrija spending very little time on the floor, Real are basically without centers, which makes it impossible to stand up to Efes in rebounding. That is only one in the string of Laso's mistakes. He is continuing with tactical experiments that will probably cost his team the Euroleague title this season.

- A tough mental and physcial battle will take place as it has every game of this series so far. It's important that we are ready to play under pressure of the home crowd for 40 minutes and that we return to Madrid but only for the Final Four - Laso said.

His team is the favorite in this match as well but judging by everything we saw so far, they are defitneily no longer the favorite. If Efes manage to dominate rebounding again and limit the game to 70 points, they will have a great shot at another win. Laso has nothing new to offer and what we saw from Real so far wasn't good. This series would have been long finished if the world was a fair place and if Efes had just a bit of luck. They would have, in that case, reached Final Four, not Real.

That is the greatest truth from the first three games but the score is 1-2 and sports is not always about fairness. The fact is, Efes are dominant in rebounding all season long and Laso has nothing to stand up to that. He made a desperate move by putting Slaughter in the last game, giving him a significant among of time on the floor. He does that only when the opponents's centers need to be beaten up. For example, he mostly does it against Tomic and now against Krstic, who did great again.

The Turkish side waited for Janning long enough and then decided to leave him out of the list for the Turkish league but then put him back on last week, which might have served the American as extra motivation (Bjelica out for the rest of the season). He tuned into a hero at Abdi Pekci, not only because he scored the buzzer-beating three pointer but for his overall shooting productivity that got Efes 10 points ahead. Just like in Marid, they lost the lead due to bad solution's against Real's strange zone defense in which Slaughter played almost the most important role. Only Laso is probbly playing that kind of a zone.

Perperoglou and Draper were horrible in shooting, allowing Real to get back through Rodriguez. Individually, Real won't win here and Efes and totally equal. When they have this kind of rebounding, they're even superior.

- All the games so far were top level and I expect this one to be the same. All of our players except for Korkmaz will be ready and I expect our good game, just like so far - Ivkovic said.

Efes are getting better in form, that is very obvious and a great reason for it are good performances by the young Osman. He was the MVP at U-21 EC last summer and lead Turkey toward the gold medal.

- We have confidence and believe in ourselves. We're ready to fight until the final moment of game 5 - Osman said.
