Olympiacos - Barcelona (71:68)

To be or not to be for Barcelona

  • Published:

Barcelona played an almost identical series against Panathinaikos two seasons ago, and they won in the key quarterfinal duel in Athens. They hope to do the same today, but they'll have to really improve their shot percentages for that

Olympiacos won the third round of this quarterfinal battle, and today is their chance to finish the job at home. A win would get them the so desired placement to the Final Four.

- We're leading 2-1 and we have to win one more game with the support of our fans, they've been an incredible incentive for us - Sferopoulos said.

The defense was the key on Tuesday, once again. Barcelona didn't score a point for almost eight minutes of the last period, and that's when Olympiacos made an 11-2 series that basically decided the match. The Catalonians got one more chance in the last seconds, but Olympiacos saved it.

- The defense we played in the second and the fourth period made the difference. It's really important to keep your opponent at low numbers in a match this important - Mantzaris said.

Printezis lead Olympiacos once again, with 19 points. He was the only one with double-digit score except for Spanoulis. Still, regardless of their success, Printezis is aware nothing is done yet.

- Barcelona are very dangerous in away matches. We've seen how they can play, so we have to forget this win.

The first three matches brought a big defensive battle, as expected. The result was a game that ended with low numbers. Neither of the teams scored over 76, and we can expect a big battle for every point today. Considering the result, this match is the crucial one. The Catalonians are at the edge of being eliminated, but also, a win would bring them a momentum before the key match at home.

- Tomorrow's match will be the toughest one. They want to bring the series back to their court, and will do their best, but we don't want to go back to Barcelona - Dunston said, and added a few comments about the tactics:

- I don't think we have to change anything. We have to keep the good elements from the first two matches, pay attention to the defense, and keep our rhythm. We could be better in the offense and in the pick-and-roll, and run more fastbacks.

Barcelona got to the lead in the third match, at the beginning of its last period, and then a blackout happened. They didn't score a single point in almost seven minutes, and the game was solved there and then. They did have a small comeback at the very end, which was their chance to win, but Oleson's shots just wouldn't go in.

- Both teams could have won, but in the end Olympiacos celebrated. We fought, but our offense wasn't working in the last period, and that's why we lost - the coach Pascual said after the duel.

He definitely didn't make a good move by keeping Oleson in the game in the key moments, the man obviously didn't recover enough, and missed two key shots in the last minute. This time Justin Doellman spent enough time on the court (30 minutes). Even though he seems ready physically, his shots still aren't it (1/5 three-pointers), and that dulls Barcelona's game, who have a hard time dealing with Olympiacos' offense as it is.

- It's always hard when you lose a game, but it's even harder because now it's two in a row. But, I remain optimistic and believe we'll play better in the next game - Ante Tomić said. The Greeks guarded him well in this match.

Barcelona dominated the rebounds, and that allowed them to stay in the game until the very end, despite their disastrous shots. But to keep the series going and get it back to Barcelona, they'll have to shoot much better today. Doellman is the key, he'll have to open the paint with his back shot, and that's the only cure for Oly's defense.

Let's remind you that Barcelona played an almost identical series against Panathinaikos two seasons ago. They won the first, lost the following two, and then broke PAO in the key fourth duel in Athens, winning the series in the end. It remains to be seen if they can repeat the same thing today.
