Toronto - Washington (86:93)

A series that could be decided by point guards

  • Published:

This is a duel between one of the best offenses of the league, Toronto, and one of the best defenses, the Washington Wizards

After the end of the super exciting regular part of the season, where the last two to join the playoff weren't known till the very end, the 2015 playoff will start in Toronto, where the Raptors will host the Washington Wizards. It'll be a duel between two teams who played a great first third of the season, as obvious from the combined ratio of 46-15 they had in December. However, both teams got a bit worse in the rest of the season, which brought them the fourth place of the conference for the Toronto Raptors, and fifth for the Wizards.

They were a bit of a surprise when they got to the playoff last season, but Raptors started this one with a goal to outdo the last year's success, and pass the first round of the playoff successfully for the first time in 14 years.

- Getting to this phase was our primary goal, but now we want to take it a step further. We played the experienced Brooklyn Nets in the first round of the playoff last year, and got eliminated in a series of seven matches where we could learn a lot. Now it's time to take that step further - DeRozan said.

Coach Casey's team got 49 wins this season, which is the record of the organization. The Raptors got a lot of that thanks to their great offensive game, which lead them to sharing the fourth place of the league with 104 points per game. It all starts with Lowry who continued this season where he stopped in the last. The numbers show Kyle has 17.8 points per game, 6.8 assists, and 4.7 rebounds. His backcourt partner, DeMar DeRozan is also having a great season (20.1 points per game), and their performances will be crucial, especially considering that the Wizards' best weapon is their backcourt duo, Wall-Beal.

While good offensive game is the Canadian team's biggest weapon, defense might be their biggest weakness. The Raptors often had defensive problems this season, ending up being one of the worst defenses of the league with 100.9 points conceded per game. However, the last two weeks of the regular part showed coach Casey fully focusing on that segment, and the progress was obvious.

- As for our defense, I feel much better now than I did two weeks ago. I think we made a big step forward in that segment - Casey said.

Wall and his company will show best whether Casey was saying the truth. The Wizards' road was similar to the Raptors' this season. A very good start and euphoria were replaced with being average in every segment, and that lead to a disappointing fifth place of the conference with a 46-36 ratio.

While the home team's best weapon is their offense, the Wizards had big problems with that this season. Coach Wittman's team score 98.5 points per game this season, and only the Nets and the Bucks were worse than them in that segment. In Toronto, it all starts with Lowry, and in the Wizards, it all starts with Wall. He's even more active than Lowry, he's leading the league in the number of minutes spent with the ball in his hands.

It all resulted in a great season for the Wizards' point guard, he has 17.6 points with 10 assists per game, but it's obvious he'll need the rest of the team to pitch in tonight. First of all Beal, but also Pierce, Nene and Gortat, they have to show more than they did in the regular part.

A big problem for the Wizards is when their game is slowed down, when Wall is not allowed to make fastbacks. Then the Wizards are forced to play half-court offense, and that's not something they do well. They can thank that to taking too many mid range shots, only the Knicks had more in the entire league.

However, the Wizards make up for bad offense by playing great defense. They are one of the best in the league with 97.8 points conceded per game. Washington are aligned great defensively, and the defense will be the key tonight.

When it comes to matches these two played against each other this season, Toronto celebrated in all three, but they were all played before the All Star break. We should also mention the last two were decided in the last seconds, so that ratio can easily mislead you.

- Now that the playoff started, the results from the regular part don't matter anymore. A completely different basketball is played now. A completely different mentality in the players' heads, a different intensity, and the atmosphere - Beal concluded.

The atmosphere will definitely be great tonight considering that the hot Air Canada Centre got another incentive when Pierce said he's not worried if they have to play the Raptors even before anyone knew they'll face each other. With that in mind, and the fact that the Canadian fans don't keep Pierce in a good memory after he blocked Lowry in the seventh game's final moments last season, eliminating the Raptors from the playoff, it's obvious this duel will be a real treat.
