Hull City - Liverpool (1:0)

Hull for salvation, Liverpool in crisis

  • Published:

Hull were without a win for 6 games when they finally recorded one last Saturday but that got them only one point away from the danger zone. Liverpool are letting go the last few rounds and a win would secure them a spot in Europa League

Hull and Liverpool are to meet today in the postponed 33rd round game, which is important for both teams. Hull are in big fight to avoid relegation, while Liverpool need to defend the place leading into Europa League first and foremost. A win in Hull would see them get 4 points short of United, which means motivation will run high on both sides.

Hull did brilliantly away against Crystal Palace on Saturday to end the bad streak that went on for 6 rounds and resulted in only 2 points in that period of time. That win also saw them stay clear of the danger zone (one point more than Sunderland, who are in spot 18 which results in relegation).

Manager Bruce's team is on a very tough schedule as they meet Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United until the end. Good news to some extent is the fact 4 out of remaining 5 games will be played at their stadium even though Hull are overall with the third worst record home in the league.

- What I liked most was the fact we were fearless and I don't even have to say how important the win over Palace was. It was one of those performances we know we are capable of. N'Doye could have easily finished with a hat-trick given the number of attempts - Bruce said. A few of his starters like defender Davies, midfielder Meyler and forward Jelavic are still out, which means Bruce will probably go with the lineup that started against Palace last round.

- We have no time left for excuses. When you play a great team like Liverpool you need to defend well. We did that against Palace, slowed down their pace and had almost 20 shots on target. We hope for something like it against Liverpool even though they are a tougher rival, which means we'd be happy with a point. It's important to get something in each home game to avoid relegation - Steve Bruce said and announced a dense midfield. Out of the last 19 head-to-head games with Liverpool, Hull won only one (back in December 2013) while losing 13.

Liverpool are in a crisis, with only one win in the last 4 championship rounds and the painful FA Cup semifinals knock-out to Aston Villa. Brendan Rodgers' team failed to get past West Bromwich's tough defense and since Hull are very similar to Bromwich both in style and players characteristics, we could be in for a game very similar to that one.

That would mean that Liverpool will have initiative and higher possession but will have a tougher time creating attempts and ending up before Hull's goal. It will be very important for them to use first and second attempts as there might not be too many of those. Liverpool probably lost Sturridge for the rest of the season which is very bad news because it leaves them without a proper, in-form striker. Midfielder Leiva and center back Sakho are still out.

- The game in West Bromwich showed once again how difficult it is to play against the kind of defense Tony Pulis sets up. But we need to focus on ourselves and on getting our killer game back on. Last season was a proof of what great changes can happen in the table in the last 5 games. United are still within reach - Rodgers said. He should go back to 3-4-3 formation to get his back players as closer to opponents' goal as possible in order to get extra players in attacks.

- Hull are struggling to avoid relegation and it's always tough to play against the fierceness and toughness of such teams. But we'll try and win to cement our European qualification not matter how tough it will be - Rodgers said. Liverpool did not concede in 7 out of the last 8 games to get a total of 17 points while losing only in London to Arsenal (1-4).
