Fener safe, Efes in dire straits

Two Serbian coaches on opposite sides, and history tells us Željko Obradović often lost games like this one before, allowing Partizan to advance due to loses by his teams

Fenerbahce have secured the playoff, and can only reach the top spot if CSKA lose in Milan. The odds of that are low, and Fener will not be very invested in this match. Fener on the other hand badly need this victory to keep control of their own fate. Euroleague's 'brilliant' scheduling set all the games at different times, something borderline insane. Efes depend on Laboral and vice versa, and the games are almost three hours apart. If Efes lose, Kutxa will be playing their most important match of the season at Malaga. If Efes win, the Malaga match becomes irrelevant. Either way, Efes have to go for the win to keep their fate in their own hands.

One has to recall the numerous times Panathinaikos and Fenerbahce lost last year, all of those against Partizan and all of them with Obradović leading the Greeks of Turks. In each of those cases Partizan badly needed the win, and Obradović's team needed nothing. We're stressing the fact that once again we've got two Serbian coaches on opposite sides, with one side badly needing the win, the other not at all. It's hard to discuss the plot and ending of this match, and rumor has it that Željko Obradović said in Istanbul that he'd never hear the end of it if he lost this match.

Fener have real issues that will make this match more difficult to play. Last week in Vitoria the Basques piled fouls on Vesely, 5 in 10 minutes, and then destroyed the Turks with picks, a game Obradović can hardly defend without Vesely or Žorić. Only officially confirmed absence is Hickman, whose absence will be a major issue for Obradović in the rest of the season. Preldžić and Goudelock will certainly play, as will Žotić, who recovered from hamstring injury.

Efes, on the other hand, stagnated significantly in their performance. A team with such a huge budget cannot allow themselves to lose that many matches at this time of the season against the worst teams in the league. Over the past month, they've lost to Usak, TED and Eskisekir, all three bottom ranked teams fighting for survival. Ivković did not make a fuss about their latest defeat, but losing such games was definitely not pleasant, especially not when you know what they'll face tonight.

They did well against Fener this season, winning two of the three matches they played, including the Cup finale, where tehy limited Fener to 60 points.

-We have to be fully focused on elements such as concentration, game control, and communication on defense and offense.- pointed out Ivković.

If they enter it, they almost certainly get in as 4th in the group, meaning a best of five series against Real. They're not doing so great in the league, and they'll be meeting Feenrbahce, Darusafaka and Sesiktas in the coming period? The past weeks proved that Efes have difficulty playing on two sides at once, and Complicating the league position could be a double edged sword if done during the series against Real.

In any case, many question remain unaswered, and we're eager to see there this match takes us.
