Pascual: Zagreb are like Jugoplastika, only in handball terms

  • Published:

Zagreb's kids beat Kiel, PSG and Kolding home and coach Vujovic has an idea about how to stop the top offense in the world. Barca have three consecutive defeats in QFs first leg games

Huge lines that were forming ahead of this game are only a proof of what great achievements Zagreb have reached this season. And that won't change, no matter what they do in the two games against the team that is probably the greatest favorite for the Champions League title. When Vujovic took over at Zagreb, the players got a coach who has authority and whose every word is being followed to the letter. Neither Goluza nor Dvorsek had that. Zagreb won all home games, including the three great ones (Kiel, PSG, Kolding). Those three teams were considered the top contenders for the top spots ahead of the season. Kiel and PSG are still in the race, while Zagreb knocked out the Danes. Today, they are going to try and mess Barcelona's plans.

- We're ambitious but it's not the kind of a sick ambition. Barcelona were made to become European Champions but we're not afraid of anyone - Zagreb's coach said.

- They have the best attack but we have the best defense. I think I'm a serious coach and that we're a serious team. Each serious team has two main plus two back-up defenses. I don't know which one of those will work,  but I have an idea...

It's never boring with Vujovic, what you just read is what he really thinks and what he will tell his players. No matter how confident his youngsters will be today, this game will be decided by a million other things as well. But they will be fierce for sure. Barcelona's offense is not as brilliant, as weird as that might sound. Karabatic-Lazarov-Rutenka-Entrerrios are not particularly fast, especially Kiro and Sergej. This Zagreb know how to deal with players like that.

Zagreb are complete, with all 19 players being at coach's disposal today. The main problem for Vujovic is which 3 to write off the list. While his defense should do their job good, the great question is, how will the offense respond because playing against Karabatic and Sorhaindo, with Saric on the goal, is sometimes impossible.

Zagreb is in euphoria and everything is revolving around this game, while Barcelona are calm, in good spirits, and with a huge deal of respect for this opponent, in spite of the fact they are huge favorites in theory. Coach Pascual compared Zagreb to basketball club Jugoplastika, which Toni Kukuc lead to three consecutive European titles.

- Zagreb's players are not that famous, I would compared them to Jugoplastika. It seems like they're not much but we'll probably see some great star rising from that team in the next few years. Mandalinic, Obranovic, Brozovic...There are 3 or 4 players no one ever talks about but when you analyze their game, you realize you need to be careful. They also have a great goal keeper Ivic - Pascual said and added:

- I don't see any shortcomings on that team. We won't have it easy. We can say what ever we want but we need to be stand with both feet on the ground because the result will decide who is to reach the next round in the end. Many were happy with the draw, but only because they don't know Zagreb well.

He is not worried about the atmosphere at the Zagreb Arena:

- We are used to playing before 20,000 fans cheering for the other team. We can't control that and should worry about it. I want to see how we respond on the floor.

He knows that Zagreb are undefeated home this season while Barcelona have bad results from QFs first-leg games since they lost the last three (Copenhagen, Atletico and Rhein-Neckar Löwen).

- We know how important this game is, we'll try and do our best but we are meeting a team who have not lost home yet. I think they have a say in this too - said Pascual, who has all the players at his disposal.

''They told me I need to get this team running. I know the team I have and that would have been stupid. They are too young, they would have made too many mistakes. Who ever tried to outrun Paris and Kiel lost. I can get them to outrun Umag, because in that case, I am Barcelona'' Zagreb's coach Vujovic said recently something everyone already knows. Only the fast-paced Logrono managed to get Zagreb at over 60 goals in the CL home game. Kiel did it in Germany in a game Zagreb didn't even believe to have a shot. The other 8 Zagreb CL games finished under this margin and not only that. In fact, they all finished under 50 goals, some of them well under 50 (one with Kolding under 40). The significant SEHA league games with close rivals (Veszprem, Vardar, Tatran, Meshkov, Metalurg) all finished under 50 as well. Vujovic has 19 extremely keen players who can't wait to take on Barcelona today. I'm sure Zagreb will get this game in their rhythm and their level of toughness and no one can avoid that, not even the might Barca. I expect the Catalan team to struggle for each goal because Zagreb always seem to have an extra player in defense. Barcelona have only 4 unders at this margin this year, but I'm not worried about that. Their Spanish league games get finished even before starting, most CL games are no different either. Most of those game, Barcelona didn't try their best, especially in defense. The first key game, the one to Aalborg away was the first one in which they went full throttle on the defensive end and Aalborg finished with 11 goals (the game finished at total of 42, the second-leg at only 51). I believe Zagreb will manage to slow down the pace just like Aalborg and as additional reason, I can think of one Spanish league game which Barcelona barely managed to win. The opponents were Benidorm, who surprised Barca with deep and aggressive defense, limiting them to 10 goals in the first half. The game finished at 53. To sum up, Barcelona's maximum focus in defense, Zagreb's limited offense, and the fact they use up a lot of energy in defense and will want to bring the pace down will make it very difficult for the Croatian team to score 25 goals. On the other hand, I don't think Barca will finish with 30 or more at the Arena where Kiel and PSG were limited to 25 and 24, respectively. Under is the choice here.
