Silkeborg Voel - Tvis Holstebro (24:35)

Silkeborg playing their first playoff ever

  • Published:

By losing to Silkeborg in the last round of the regular season, Tvis Holstebro practically selected Silkeborg as their opponent in this quarterfinal series

The last round of the regular season, in which they beat Holstebro, will be remembered as a special day in Silkeborg history, as that was the first time in franchise history that they got to the playoff and into the title competition. Although many handball experts placed Silkeborg among those likely to get relegated, even before the season started, Silkeborg proved them all wrong through great results during the season and victories against 'great' teams like the defending champions Viborg, top ranked in regular season Esbjerg, and in the end beating third ranked Holstebro.

Apart from getting fifth ranked in the championship, Silkeborg also have two of the best scorers in the league on their roster. Jetter Hansen ended the season as top scorer with 157 goals, Ane Cecilie De le Cour is right behind her with 135. Both were invited to play at the Golden League tournament by the temporary Danish selector Heine Eriksen, where Hansen scored 6 goals, while Cecilie de la Cour cancelled her participation due to knee issues.

Home team's coach Jakob Andreasen stated his views of their first quarterfinal duel:

-We're looking forward to playing in the quarterfinal, where we've got nothing to lose as we've already surpassed all expectations for this year. In the last match against Holstebro, which we won by 4 goals, they entered it with completely different motives  and they will have a different attitude in this quarterfinal game. We have a tough game ahead of us, but we're ready for the challenge. Our last match brought about 1600 fans to the Jysk Arena, we want it full today. With great support we can hope for a victory too- said Andreasen.

Holstebro had a clear situation prior to the last round of playoff, and could have chosen their rival in the quarterfinal, Silkeborg or Randers. According to coach Agesen, he and his team decided to play the quarterfinal against Silkeborg and lost the match. Back then Agesen said that the return bout of the EHF cup and away game in Paris were more important for them, as those were just two days after the Silkeborg match. Back then Linn Blohm, their central defender, was not present, while perimeter players Larke Moller and Jasmina Roberts played for a limited time. Today they will have a totally different attitude towards the match.

-We haven't lost even half of our energy in the last duel we played two weeks ago, and played a match without much movement and without high intensity. Today we're ready for a quick paced match with lots of running and good defense- said Niels Agesen.

Last week Agesen lacked seven of his players due to national team obligations. Since Monday all of them rejoined the team and started practicing for this double match, and the only player that returned injured was pivot Stine Bodholt Nielsen. She missed the last match Denmark played against Poland due to a foot injury, and will be on the roster for the away match against Silkeborg according to coach Agesen.

A duel between the team with the second best offense of the Danish championship, Tvis Holstebro, and a squad with the two leading scorers in regular season, Silkeborg, naturally imposes the expectation of an offense dominated game. These two teams already met just two weeks ago in the last round of the championship, but that match cannot be a benchmark as Holstebro played that match to lose and then meet Silkeborg in the quarterfinal again. Holstebro coach said they played at half strength in that match, and that they'll pick up the pace and play aggressively in the quarterfinal, with lots of running. Their first duel, in the first part of the season, ended with Holstebro running over Silkeborg like an express train, with the game ending at 56 goal in this very arena, while their last preseason duel had a similar outcome (38-19). Silkeborg already exceeded all expectations here, and have nothing to lose. Their main strengths are their perimeter scorers, Jette Hansen and Cecilie de la Cour, and they'll rely on them here as well. A handicap option on Holstebro is also playable, but I see more value in the margin offered on over.
