Dnipro - Club Brugge (1:0)

Brugge coach: The chances are 50-50

  • Published:

After 0-0 in Belgium, both teams have equal chance to get through

Dnipro didn't get beat in Brugge, which was Markevych's first goal, but considering they didn't score, that result doesn't do much for them in getting to the semifinals. Dnipro's form has been fantastic after the winter break, and coach Markevych obviously did a great job. Dnipro got minimally beat only by Ajax in 14 matches played, and that lead them to the Europa League quarterfinal. Except for Brugge, they also played a tie against Olympiacos and in the recent championship duel against Metalist. In those 14 duels, Dnipro saved their net and didn't receive a single goal 11 times. The atmosphere was improved even more by beating Olimpik Donetsk convincingly this Sunday.

Even though Markevych talked about his team being able to win Europa League before the away match in Brugge, he's trying to mild the euphoria down before the return fixture:

- The most important thing is to not go over the limit. The guys just have to play the game, that's it. We don't need to over-exaggerate the situation, everyone is aware of the importance of this match. If the players are reminded daily that they have to win, it rarely brings a positive result.

Evgen Shakhov is back for Dnipro after finishing his suspension, but Valeriy Fedorchuk will miss it for the same reason. The huge problem for the coach are the injuries, the very good back Egidio, the center back Ondrej Mazuch, and the forward Zozulya. Considering those absences, Bruno Gama and Roman Bezus are fighting for Fedorchuk's position, and the young Valeri Luchkevich could get advantage over Selezny on the right wing.

The Belgian team didn't manage to score in the first game, but what matters is that they didn't concede a goal either. Especially considering the fact that Dnipro were far more active offensively. This way, they still have a decent chance, and scoring one goal would change everything. Brugge played an important championship match against Anderlecht this weekend, were losing 1-0 at the half-time, but thanks to Oulare and Vormer, they managed to turn it around in the last 15 minutes. That win will definitely boost their self-confidence before the return fixture against Dnipro.

- My team didn't play the European cup final for a long time, so we're happy to be here. I'm proud we're still fighting for all three trophies: the league, the cup that we already won, and the Europa League. We'll do whatever we can to win all three. No competition is especially important for us, but the first match that's coming next is - Brugge coach Michel Preud'homme said, and added:

- Dnipro are a strong team, but there are no weak opponents at this stage of the competition. They're organized very well, but so are we. We got ready well, studied everything and I think we can reach our goal. I don't think they have an advantage after that first match. We didn't score, but hadn't conceded, either, so this is 50-50.

The guests will play without two starters, the right back Thomas Meunier, and the midfielder Felipe Gedoz. Another starter is questionable, the center back Oscar Duarte.
