Fiorentina - Dinamo Kyiv (2:0)

Fiorentina closer to reaching semi regardless of decline in form

  • Published:

Fiorentina lost 3 out of the last 4 games to score only once - against Kiev in injury time. That made them favorites in the second-leg but Dinamo won't give up. Also, they have a derby match with Sakhtar coming up in three days

Two straight Serie A defeats didn't help Fiorentina in their bid to finish the season in spot three, which would see them play Champions League next year but there is still a chance of reaching that goal if they win Europa League. Fiorentina players were brilliant in European games so far, having recorded a good result in the first leg in Kiev as well. Babacar scored a late goal which would see them advance today if this game finished as a goalless draw. Following a brilliant string of results, Montella's team are definitely in decline since the only goal they scored in the last 4 games is that one Babacar scored in Europa League. In the same period of time, Fiorentina conceded 8 goals but lack of good results recently in spite, they are playing well this season and that makes them the favorite ahead of the new clash with the Ukrainian team.

Montella believes his team learned a lot in the last matches:

- You learn something from every experience. We now have that draw from the away game that isn't worth a lot, which is why we need to play our game. Dinamo are very tough physically and we need to play a good game both in technical and physical respect. We knocked out teams like Tottenham from Europa League and given the inevitable injury struggle you have when playing three competitions simultaneously, I think we did a great job this season. I am not okay with the team being jeered at because the players did so much and criticism is completely uncalled for in this situation. I get very irritated when I see my players are unjustly criticized.

Fiorentina were dominant throughout the entire match against Verona but failed to score from a penalty kick and got punished for it later on when Obbadi scored after a poor reaction by the goal keeper Neto. To make matters even worse, Montella lost Babacar to a knee injury in that game. Badelj received a nasty blow in that game as well but he will be on the list for the Dinamo game. Forward Rossi has been out with an injury for a while. It is expected for Montella to bring back the usual starters whom he rested against Verona and that they will be in the 4-3-3 lineup again.

Fiorentina will do their best to try and avoid the penalty shootout today as they are the worst team when it comes to penalty kick efficiency in Europe this season. Diamanti missed that penalty against Verona while Gomez did the same against Parma, Rodriguez against Sampdoria, and Babacar against Torino.

Dinamo were behind ahead of the first two knock out stage second leg matches of this season as well. But this time around, the second leg is not being played in Kiev, unlike the second leg matches with Guingam and Everton. Granted, they didn't lose the first leg but need to score in order to get through, which puts a certain among of pressure on the team. Worst of all, they conceded that one goal in first leg game injury time.

Dinamo are still sitting top table in Ukraine's championship, with five points more than Shakhtar, the team they will meet next Sunday in league's greatest derby match. Dinamo recorded another league win last round when they beat Voline from Luck after scoring three goals in only 8 minutes mid-second half to destroy hopes for the home team, who have had a lead as of minute 6. Left back Antunes missed that game after being forced to leave the pitch in Kiev with an injury 24 minutes into the game. Serhij Rebrov hopes he will be ready for the second leg:

- Antunes missed the championship game after which he for back to training. I hope he'll be ready. We need to give our best in each and every game. The players displayed character and managed to win. Each game is important since we want success in every competition. We need to prove that Fiorentia's goal in Kiev was the result of our mistake.

Unlike Antune who confirmed he thinks he'll be given the start today, Rebrov won't be able to count on midfielder Velos, center back Dragovic, and Makarenko, who's been out for a while now. Five players might miss the potential semifinals with a suspension in case they get booked today. but Rebrov says his team will think only about winning today.

- This clash is about two battles. The first one ended with us conceding that late goal after making a mistake. We are ready and I'm sure we'll display our quality. We analyzed Fiornetina's match with Verona in which they used only a handful of usual starters. They will do much differently against us because they have a lot of top quality players to choose from. Fiorentina are a great team, full of great players who are used to playing at top level. The only club like that we have in the championship is Shakhtar and that is definitely their upper hand - Rebrov said, once again lamenting that late goal and confirming they will do their best in Florence:

- Florence is a beautiful city but we are here to compete, not to do sightseeing. We are a bit tired due to busy schedule but our players are pros and fatigue should not be a problem once they step out on the pitch.

Vice captain and Kiev's top scorer in Europa League, Jarmoljenko says they know everything about the opponent:

- I hope the second leg game will be different and officiating more fair. We analyzed the game in Kiev and know everything there is to know about Fiorentina. As for rumors about me moving to Italy, I'm not interested in that. I play at Dinamo and I want to win trophies this season.
