Reneses fears away team's strength

Gran Canaria have 17 out of 18 in Eurocup, and Krasiyaka are arriving with an 8-game run with no defeats. Their Top 32 record was 6-0

Gran Canaria's domination this season in Eurocup is impressive. Their 17-1 record is worth the praise. However, it's obvious they're having trouble in the home championship because of that because they can't seem to catch the tempo. The playoffs seem to be miles away now after they've lost in the last round in Bilbao and it's really hard to explain how can one team play so well in the Eurocup, and struggle in the home championship.

Today they have a chance to earn a positive result before the rematch in Turkey where they surely won't have it easy.

- They have the advantage because the rematch is being played at home, and they didn't lose that in the Top 32 phase. We mustn't think of the rematch today and some difference because any difference will be welcomed - said coach Reneses.

Gran are still undefeated at home in the Eurocup, which is great news. However, Reneses is worried because of another situation:

- I'll only mention that Banvit are the only team who've beaten us this season in Eurocup. They were really strong and aggressive. And Karsiyaka beats them in the physical sense.

Reneses is obviously worried because of the fact that the Turks are very aggressive in the defense and are among Eurocup's leading teams when it comes to steals.. Luckily for the Spaniards, their offense is great and they rarely have turnovers.

- They are a very aggressive team, so I expect a tough and firm match which is also historical for us. Our road in Eurocup is so far great and I hope it won't change.

Although Grana are the second best team of the Eurocup regarding the number of points on their home court, a lot will depend on their defense today. It enables them the transitions where they're the strongest and we should see if they will implement it this time because they're up against an opponent who are faster than them, but don't have any real center which Travares and others should soon discover.

- We have to go step by step. Play one action after the other and only like that will we be able to score the result we need. We want to have the support of our fans because no away team can have it easy in front of them - said one of the more experienced players, Albert Oliver.

Oliver is right, and a lot of teams convinced themselves of that. The last one was the big Barcelona. The Turks are far from such quality which means that the "islanders" will enter this match as slight favorites.

And while Gran Canaria won 17 out of 18 matches in Eurocup, Krasiyaka don't have any reason to be ashamed of their numbers. They lost some unimportant matches at the end of the first part when they were safe, Top 16 record was 6-0, they passed the quarter-finals without a defeat with two impressive matches against the strong Rytas. The first one was a draw in Vilnius, and the second one, in Izmir, Rytas were crushed with +20 until halftime.

- Our first goal today is to win the match, and we could do with a draw like with Rytas - coach Ufuk Sarica is full of optimism, and he has reason to be like that.

- Our current situation is very good, we're playing our game, we have good ball flow, and the trust is great.

Krasiyaka really seem powerful. On Saturday they took a stroll through Ankara with +17 against Telekom, who are not a weak team. They kept their rivals at 45% of shots for two and 24% of shots for three points. They solved the match early so Sarica could save his players for today.

- Gran Canaria are dangerous opponents, they lost a single match in this competition. But we're on an 8-game run without losing, we don't have to hold back in front of anyone. We are a team who can beat anyone.

Sarica's greatest challenge will be the game on the inside where the Spaniards have the huge Tavares. Karsiyaka don't have such a center. Palacios is shorter and he will have a lot of difficulties. Gabriel has to deal with Kendall and Summers, but that shouldn't be as hard. Diebler and Kuric will also be at each other's throats.

Gran Canaria's 17-1 in Europe looks impressive, but we could discuss that with the following: "Against how many top teams have they played?" Buducnost, Artland, Dijon, Asvel, Oostende... All middle classes of European basketball, and what Karsiyaka present at this moment is a bit above that. This Karsiyaka played egal matches against currently top European team Fener, lost the sad semifinals of the Cup, beat Efes with ease at home. Rytas won Zalgiris with +30 before heading to Izmir, and Karsiyaka had +20 until hald time. Sarica created an excellent team who have no problems with injuries, who are playing top defense and who didn't concede over 80 points in Europe in strong matches. I won't count the unimportant meetings such as the ones against Stelmet, Buducnost or Lokomotiva in the last round of the first part. The strong Lokomotiva were left at 75 in Russia, and Krasiyaka now look more impressive. On the other hand, Gran Canaria look very modest. I would daresay they're more modest than in the first part of the season. The home defeat in the Cup finale against Joventut was difficult. Last weekend they played a desperate third quarter at Bilbao's and broke down. My pick for the semi-finals are Karsiyaka, and because of the quality of their defense and Grana's modest games lately, and because of the physica fitness of the home team where the Turks can easily stand up to Newley, Kuric and Bellas, I choose the Spaniards for today to go under 81.
