Zalgiris - Barcelona (72:83)

Pascual angry because of the latest defeat

  • Published:

Barcelona played an away match against Valencia in the league and were terribly defeated. They're fighting with Real for the first place in Euroleague's Group E, so today they have motivation. Zalgiris's chances for quarter-finals are paper thin, but they won't go down easy. At home they concede around 69.9 points on average

We've mentioned Zalgiris through a couple of previews that they play determinant matches regarding Euroleague's current season, and that they stand a chance for quarter-finals. But, today it's going to be an important match. If they fail, Zalgiris's record would be 4-8, and in case they win in the last two rounds, and if the fourth Panathinaikos loses all three matches until the end of the second phase, they would still be worse than Greeks because they're weaker in head-to-heads.

In the last round Zalgiris visited the uncomfortable Tel Aviv where they haven't won in over a decade, and the tradition continued, although they didn't go down easily. During the whole first half they were at Tel Aviv's heels. They stopped in the third, and in the fourth quarter they were losing with -12. Only then did they activate their signature thing - defense. For six minutes they didn't allow Maccabi to score and they dragged themselves to 66-60, but then American Pargo slammed the final nail in their coffin, scoring a total of 26 points.

Milaknis was leading Zalgiris with 19 points. He was also excellent with the three pointsers - 4-for-7; while Anderson's shape seems to be failing. For 12 points he waster 11 balls (4-for-11).

It was Milaknis, together with center Javtokas, whom coach Gintaras Krapikas was resting in the league duel against Lietkabelis on Monday. And other key players didn't break too much sweat. The meeting was done by half-time so Anderson, Jankunas, Songaila, Gudaitis and Cherry didn't play for more than 17 minutes. Fatigue shouldn't be a factor, and neither should the motivation because Krapikas fears of playing the rest of the three matches at their maximum. He also fears Barca's "feistiness".

- Such a team can't allow themselves two tied defeats, so they'll be full of motivation - warns Krapikas who'll see the return of Gudaitis after four missed Euroleague matches.

- He moved well against Lietkabelis. There are no signs of the injury. He looked good and he'll help us a lot against Barcelona - said Krapikas, and Gudaitis adds:

- It's very hard to stop Barca, we felt that in the first head-to-head. But now we're playing at home and we can do a lot better with the help of our fans.

It's important to point out that Zalgiris's defense is great in defense at home and in Euroleague they concede 69.9 points on average in front of their fans. In 10 matches only Real (88) and Sassari (79) scored more than 73.

Barcelona are arriving to Kaunas furious. The second championship defeat in a row really angered coach Pascual, but more than that he was angered by the way it happened:

- It's not a shame to lose against Valencia, but we shouldn't have fallen apart like that and given up. That's absolutely unacceptable and I apologize to all of our fans. No fatigue can justify what we did.

Barcelona's defense was criminal, and it's usually their forte. There was no defense against Valencia and that's why Pascual is so angry. Their approach has to change, and it starts today.

- I don't want to see such a game against Zalgiris. We have to show mental and physical strength if we want to win - Barcelona's coach is clear.

Barca are better in Euroleague than in the home championship, and they stand a chance to fight with Real for the first place, but in order to do that they need to win today, and it won't be that easy.

- Zalgiris are very good, especially at home. Their fans can create an excellent atmosphere and it's not easy to play there. It's our duty not to play as bad as we did in the last championship meeting - said play Huertas.

Barca easily beat Zalgiris in the first head-to-head. They completely stopped Anderson, and on the other hand they used the advantage they have in the paint, and over Doellman, Tomic and Nachbar they crushed the away team. Today it's going to be tougher because Zalgiris are a firmer team at home, and since Barca have lately been vulnerable in away matches, this seems like a complicated match.

Starting from the very presumption that this match is very important for both teams, the margin still seems to high for a point or two. Zalgiris need the win in order to leave some theoretical chance for the quarter-finals, and Barca will try to take over Real's first place in the group. Further on, Zalgiris are offensively limited, and depend on Anderson's mood (who, by the way, isn't in some perfect shape lately). So it's not surprising they'll be focusing on the defense. How good is it they've shown a lot of times this season, and especially in their home hall where they conceded 69.9 points on average. They left one Real at 68 in their first head-to-head, Nhizny at 63, UNICS at 71... Only Real (88) and Sassari (79) scored somewhat more in the rematches. They have 7 out of 10 unders on this margin. They went over when they conceded more and when they crushed Nhizny. Barca, in writing, has the best defense in Europe, but sometimes they forget to play it. Their coach was furious after the Valencia fiasco where they conceded 93 points, and today I expect them to be strongly on their feet, and feisty. So I don't see this over the set margin.
