Efes Pilsen - Fenerbahce (71:77)

Efes' defense was dominant in the first head-to-head

  • Published:

Ivkovic's team limited Bogadnovic and Goudelock to combined 7-for-26 from the floor and not even 16+16 by Nemanja Bjelica helped Fenerbahce. Both teams are 4-2 ahead of this game, but Fener didn't lose a single Top 16 games away

Both rich Turkish teams are in fine form ahead of the head-to-head game. Efes are on a 5-game, Fenerbahce on a 6-game winning run. Both are 4-2 in Top 16 and who ever wins today will be only a step away from Euroleague QFs. Many experts, however, think both of these teams will make it among the top 8 European teams.

Fenerbahce were better in last season's head-to-head games and ended up winning all four, never allowing Efes to finish with more than 65 points. Efes lead by Dudo Ivkovic, however, now seems much better, especially since they settled the head-to-head very early to win 85-67 in the end. Efes played perfect defense to limit Fenebahce to only 36% of two-point shots and 33% in three-pointers. It is not realistic to expect something like that again, particularly now that Fenerbahce are better than back when the first game took place. They made progress since Nikos Zisis joined to make Obradovic's team game more stable.

Following the crushing defeat in Novgorod, Efes pulled themselves together to beat Olympiacos and Milano in Euroleague and tricky Gaziantep and Trabzonspor in the Turkish league.

- I definitively expect a great game. It will be different than the one we won easily in the league. Fenerbache won all of their away game so far, they control the game well, while we need to focus on playing this with good rhythm. It will be a good game - Dudo Ivkovic said.

He didn't use Draper and Krstic last weekend against Tofas, Perperoglou was given very little time on the floor, and none his players spent more than 25 minutes in the game. It was obvious that the coach was already thinking about the Fener game and the way the game was unwinding allowed him to reshuffle quite a bit. 53 percent of two-pointers and impressive 60 percent for three (12-for-20) and 26-9 in the third quarter saw Efes take a 15-point lead very early on. Bjelica and Huertel lead the team with 17 points each.

Fenerbahce's last performance wasn't nearly as convincing, even though Obradovic managed to rest some of his player too and only Vesely finished with more than 25 minutes (27). Fenerhance beat Trabzon 67-61 and managed to record 12 blocks, while Trabzon didn't have a single one. 4 blocks by Vesely came as no surprise, but 4 by Bogdanovic did. The fact Bjelica took only three shots, Boganovic only 5, Goudelock 6 proved that Fenerbahce were not 100% in the game. Obradovic had Hickman back at his disposal to record 11 points in 23 minutes (4-for-8), which left Zoric off the list on account of the foreigners' rule.

Both opponents thus saved energy for this game that should be all about top-level basketball.

- Efes are young and very energetic. They are great home, their confidence is running high in the games and we need to prepare for a great fight - Bogdanovic said. He will have an interesting matchup as he faces off with one of Europe's guards Perperoglou.

Zisis should control the unpredictable Huertel, Bjelica and Vesely have the upper hand over Saric and Mirko Bjelica, while Efes have advantage with Lasme and Krstic who are more reliable than Erden and Savas. Balbay and Goudelock clash will definitely be one of the most important ones in the match and if Efes manage to stop the American, they would get much closer to winning since Fener's offensive end depends on Goudelock's shots a lot.

In the only head-to-head of the season, Goudelock had 3-for-11, Bogdanovic 4-for-15, Vesely finished with 20 and Bjelica with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Efes's Perperoglous recorded 17 points, Osman followed suit with 14 and Janning with 13. Efes were without Krstic, who was out with an injury.
