CSKA extremely motivated after three defeats in a row

The Moscow team dominated the season so far with 30 victories, and it was hard to expect them to lost three in a row. One cannot talk of crisis, especially considering who they lost against (Lokomotiv, Olympiacos, Khimki), as well as the fact they held their own in all three games and had a chance to win in the final moments. However, just like they won a few close finishes in their grand series, now they lost a few, but are still playing at a high level. The negative series can only motivate them for today.

The match between CSKA and Khimki on Sunday was a basketball treat. A city derby between two great rivals, as well as great, attractive basketball throughout the game. The end result perfectly depicts the performance we saw, and the whole thing was seasoned with the close finish, decide by Rice with a three-point shot a second before the end. The coaches did not enjoy as much as the fans, as there were a lot of errors on defense and ups and downs during the match.

- We lost a great match, which could have been decided by one shot. It could have gone either way, and Khimki won in the end, congratulations. We definitely need to improve our game, this primarily goes for our defense. We took a combined total of 66 points in two quarters, while we won the home game 78-60. Khimki do have plenty of players who can score, but such a score is still unacceptable- said Itoudis.

Defeats did not have an impact on the CSKA's position in competitions, they're still among the top ranked in the VTB league and have lost just a single game in the Euroleague. There is no doubt they'll go full throttle today, especially at the start, as CSKA wish to prove they're still the strongest, and Milano might end up as collateral damage in order to send a message to the competition.

-We'll be playing the last game of the first part of the season against the leading team of the Italian league. Milano play an organized game, especially in positional setups. Most combinations start at the perimeter, where they have many good players such as Hackett, Gentile, Brooks, Moss. Under the rim they've got Samules, Melli and Kleiza. We have to play a quality game for the full 40 minutes, as Milano play good defense. We have to dictate the pace of the game, which will not be easy- said Itoudis.

Milano's agony continues. They're getting further and further away from the top four spots that lead to playoff, and are currently ranked last with a 1-5 score. Their biggest issue are performances at home where they had 0-3, with the last defeat suffered against Efes. The match was very close, and the teams took turns in the lead throughout the game. Efes were calmer in the final moments and won 73-71. A major handicap for Milano is the absence of Gentile, who missed the league match against Venezia too, as did Shawn James.

That was still not enough for the top contender to stop Milano winning their 13th game in a row. They won 84-74 with five double digit scorers, Samuels best at 18, Ragland with 16, and Hackett making a bit comeback with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

His return to the team and end of suspension in the league brought on the expected departure of Trent Meacham. He is setting up the transfer and it's just a matter of time before he moves over to French Asvel.

Milano arrived to Moscow yesterday evening, but will still be missing Gentile and James, which might be fatal against CSKA.

- CSKA are the best performers so far, proven by 15 consecutive wins in the Euroleague. They lost in the last round however, and this will make them highly motivated and eager to win. They'll surely take us to the limit of our potential, as one must give a perfect performance against a team such as theirs- said coach Banchi.

A high margin, but I'm pretty sure this will be a blowout. CSKA lost three in a row after winning 30 in a row, and will be fully motivated to prove they're still best in Europe right now. Those defeats were not due to a crisis of their performance but due to playing top level opponents and losing matches that could have gone both ways. The negative streak will only push them to be fully committed to winning throughout the match, in a performance Milano will be unable to parry. The Moscow team covered this handicap in 5 of their 8 home games this season, 13 of 18 at home if we count in VTB league matches, against teams such as Himki, UNICS; Maccabi, Unicaja... Milano suffered bitter defeats in both Piraeus and Vitoria in this stage, and will face an even tougher job today as they're missing Gentile and James. I expect the Russian team to win by 20+ points.
