Sevilla - Espanyol (1:0)

Sevilla after the goal-advantage home

  • Published:

Espanyol are on a four-game winning run, but the Barcelona-based team are well-known for good performances home - all of the four wins happened home

Sevilla have had a brilliant start to the year, both in the Cup and La Liga, in which they manage to claim spot four. But the last seven days cast a shadow over everything the Andalusian team did well so far. Sevilla were badly defeated to Espanyol in Barcelona and can in the end be happy the goal difference wasn't bigger (3-1). In the very next game against their direct rivals Valencia, Sevilla lost 3-1 again, this time in the championship.

- The squad won't change much in comparison to the one from the last two matches. But this time, we need to do things better, especially since we're playing home. We need to see Sevilla from the best period of this season. We have a great and tough task ahead but it won't be impossible to complete it. We need to show what a great team we are. I have prepared my players, they know that staying at top level for 93 minutes is essential since it's Cup quarterfinals and the game might get settled that late. This team has made massive progress this season and our goal is to get even better - coach Unai Emery said.

Benoito Tremoulinas, Sebastian Cristoforo i Stephan M'Bia are out and Juan Antonio Reyes most likely too since he got injured seven days ago. It was reported that he would need a 3-week break but according to the Spanish media, he might be back in the lineup today. Polish defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak will most likely miss the game with a minor injury too.

The unpredictable Espanyol have started doing better recently to record 4 straight wins ahead of the game at Sanchez Pizjuan. It is, however, very important to note that all those wins were home wins, which only goes to confirm they do much better home than away. Espanyol were not that successful in away matches this season and we have to wait and see whether they can change that today.

Coach Sergio Gonzalez said:

- We have the advantage from Barcelona but everything is still possible. Our win seven days ago gives us right to hope in getting through to semifinals and in order to see our dreams come true, we need to play a great match in Andalusia.

Catalan team coach has all the players at his disposal today and has taken them all to a trip to Sevilla, even though he clearly made some changes in the lineup. Defender Anaitz Arbilla, who has some minor injury struggles the last few days is supposed to start today.
