Athletic Bilbao - Malaga (1:0)

The two previous matches had no winner

  • Published:

Considering how closely balanced these two teams are in terms of quality, it's little wonder that the away team+s coach stated he prepared his team for a possible penalty shootout

Athletic and Malaga are meeting for the third time in just seven days, and the prior two matches gave us no winners. The first game showed us caution from both teams, neither of the coaches wanting to start the rematch with a negative position. The championship match showed a different scenario, with Athletic attacking for 90 minutes but struggling to score, while Malaga turned one of their rare chances into a goal.

Athletic will have fond memories of this season, and Ernesto Valverde sees the cup like a competition where they can redeem themselves:

-Our fans deserved some happiness in this difficult season. There are games that set the tone for the entire season, and I believe that getting to the semifinal at San Mames would be such a game for us. After the draw in the first game it's still an open game in the rematch, but I still believe we're under far greater pressure than Malaga, primarily because we're playing in front of our fans, but also because we've had a great last season.

The Spanish media did not report any news of injuries, and the minor problems Mikel San Jose and Adonni Iraola had last week have been completely cured.

Malaga played great in the first part of the season, but are decidedly lackluster in the second. However, coach Javi Garcia is not too worried prior to the rematch:

- I'm actually really pleased with the way we're playing and I think we're in really good form, we just don't seem to have any luck with the results. It's our performance that's got me convinced that we can get through Athletic and get to the semifinal. We've faced the same opponent twice in a few days, and it was obviously a clash of two equal teams. I expect something similar in the cup rematch, where the smallest details could decide the match. We're ready for 90 minutes of trench warfare, extra time if it happens, even for a penalty shootout should they occur.

Malaga are slowly rounding up their roster, so the only ones out of commission today remain Sergio Sanchez and Flavio Ferreira, both absent for a while now.
