Denmark - Argentina (24:24)

Gudmundsson: Argentina have surprised before

  • Published:

Denmark are taking the opponent seriously, which is crucial in games such as this one. If the game is decided early, once can expect the Argentinian selector to rest the Simonet brothers

The memory one has of Denmark from the past few competitions is of them among the best teams and utterly failing in final games. They lost 35-14 against Spain two years ago, but the 32-41 in front of a filled home arena probably hurts more, as everything was set for a farewell gold medal for Ulrik Wilbek. However, France were too experienced and too good, able to take advantage the way Croatia did not a few days earlier, and Denmark once again lost the highest award and left with a bitter aftertaste.

They are once again among the top contenders in Qatar, which is hardly surprising as they kept basically the same team they had last year. The biggest change is the leadership, as the helm is now held by Iceland's Gudmundsson, and it will be interesting to see how far Denmark sails under his leadership.

-Our goal is to get to the semifinal, but that is a long way ahead, behind a tough group. We'll be facing very good teams, in quite a few 50-50 games. We cannot underestimate Argentina, and we naturally have to beat Saudi Arabia- said Gudmundsson.

Although they were mostly successful in the preparation period (lost only against Iceland), one gets the impression they did not dominate. Veselin Vujovic had this to say:

- Of the four teams here Denmark are the most likely to fumble. They seem to lack creativity and their game is based solely on what kind of a day Mikkel Hansen has. If he is not in the mood, they're in trouble.

It's true that Hansen is the driving force behind this Danish team, but Gudmundsson will have to find a way to relieve him and include others in the organization of Denmark's offense. In games against weaker opponents, such as this one, the Danes rarely struggle, as they are capable of grinding down the opponent. Their quality defense with the great Landin at the goal is complimented by quick transition through wingers, and that's the way they'll go about looking for an easy win in this match as well.

- There are always minor injuries, but everyone is ready to play- points out Gudmundsson, and continues:

- It's always a challenge to play against an aggressive defense. We've tried simulating the setup of the opponents. I'm not worried, but it's my policy to never underestimate the opponent. Argentina are a tricky team with experienced and aggressive players, they've surprised before.

Argentina arrived to Qatar as the dominating winner of the Pan-american Championship, where they demolished the competitors led by the Simonet brothers. They will be leading the team in Qatar as well, but selector Gallardo is well aware his team has a tough job ahead.

Argentina's goal is getting to the second stage, but they drew into a group with four European teams that are all aiming at the quarterfinal. Their best chance is against Russia and Germany, whom they're facing last. Argentina have a quality team, but it's common knowledge that Sebastian and Diego Simonet are their driving force. Gallardo himself pointed otu a few weeks ago:

- Denmark and Poland are certainly the toughest opponents. We have to be smart and preserve our starters so we could be in good shape for the games we have a realistic chance of winning.

That would be a wise move, since Poland and especially Denmark are a few levels above after all. This is why it will be interesting to see how Gallardo will react when Denmark start to mount up their expected lead. He will certainly fully commit at the start, but the second half might bring some calculated moves.
