Poland - Germany (26:29)

A rerun of the clash they had in the qualifications

  • Published:

Poland won both matches in June with a minimal lead, and IHF gave Germany another chance. They arrived to Qatar with problems in the perimeter lineup, but also a new selector and better tuned team

Rivers of ink were spent to describe "the German case" and their entry to the World Championship. For years one of the best national teams, they've been on a downward trajectory lately. They missed the Olympics in London in 2012, as well as the European Championship in Denmark, and it seemed they'd see Qatar only on television as well. The Germans did not manage to get there through qualifications, but being the sponsor and fan magnet they are and with lots of clout in handball at the global level, they got the spot instead of Australia, who had no chance in the duel. Regardless of how unfair it seems, the championship will be more interesting with Germany there, though there was certainly no fair play involved in the decision...

Fate is fickle, and the luck of the draw decide that it would be Germany and Poland, who eliminated them in the qualifiers this summer, who will face off in the championship as well. They'll meet in the opening, first round match, and are undoubtedly the most interesting match-up of the day, partly due to the events surrounding the teams, partly due to the teams' quality. Both teams have high hopes, aiming at least for the quarterfinal while quietly hoping for more, and a good start is crucial for them.

After losing in the qualifiers the Germans brought in defensive specialist Sigurdsson to take over the helm, and he immediately focused on defense. With all the injury problems Germany had with the perimeter lineup prior to this competition, defense is the only route for them that leads to a good result. They seemed to be doing very well in the preparation period, losing only the second match against Iceland and never conceding more than 25 points. They are highly motivated, both due to the fumbles lately and due to the way they got to Qatar.

- The fun time starts now. The guys are in good spirits and expect a lot. We've worked hard and had a long time to prepare, now we want to show what we can do and that we deserve to be here- said Oliver Roggisch.

The Polish selection share the same concept, but have a much better perimeter lineup. This will be a clash of two quality defenses, and the Germans will have their work cut out for them in trying to stop Bielecki, Lijewski, Jurecki... Sigurdsson will announce the two players he will leave out the day of the game, although he said he already decided who that will be. This German team is a blend of experience and youth.

- The guys are ready for the World Championship. These are professionals playing in the Bundesliga, the strongest league in the world. The first game will mean a lot in terms of getting confidence for the rest of the competition- said Sigurdsson, and added also:

- If our defense works and the goalies have a good day, anything can happen.

The Germans had several changes in the team compared to the qualifications, as injuries forced Sigurdsson to change the roster a bit. Poland had no such issues, Biegler can use practically the best available roster and they are hoping to make the extra step and get among the best four teams, something they haven't been able for the past few years. Tough defense, quality shooters, experience, and a tuned-in team are all elements the Polish team are trusting to carry them to success.

- We've landed in a tough group, with Russia and Argentina, the best teams from their groups. Denmark are a team that can always aim for the top. Group C is also interesting, the elimination round will be strong. It will be decided by how big of a toll the group stage took on the teams in terms of fatigue- said Biegler, and added:

- Individual quality is our forte, but we have to incorporate that into teamwork. The way we handle critical situations is important, but I believe we can beat anyone.

They ironed out the final form of the team at a tournament in Oviedo, where they did not impress, mostly due to them losing too easily against the weakened Norwegian team, with the other two matches ending positively, although they demolished the Hungarians only in the last ten minutes. We can see those matches ended at around 60 goals, but one would expect a different, tougher Poland in competitive games, similar to what we're used seeing from them.

They have a very tough group, and Biegler is quite aware they have to avoid the fourth position at all cost, as it leads to facing the French in the elimination round. A victory today would be a huge step towards one of the coveted top two positions.

- I'll do my best to beat the Germans for the third time- said Polish selector Biegler, German by origin.

The matches in June were already close, Poland won both but they could have gone either way. The impression is that Germany under Sigurdsson are a better, better tuned team, despite the legion of roster issues they face. Once again we can expect a very close match, with a touch of nervousness at the start of an important tournament such as this one.
