Ufa - Servette (0:3)

The Swiss team won the opening head-to-head game

  • Published:

Two teams that opened Spengler Cup are set to play the final today. The Swiss team did better in the opening, but the Russians displayed quality, which is to make this a very interesting game

Interestingly, the Cup will be closed by the two very teams that opened it - Ufa and Servette. The Swiss team opened that first game brilliantly, but Ufa proved just how good they are later on. Servette are the only undefeated team after playing a very close and dramatic game yesterday to beat Canada for a spot in the final. But, Ufa didn't have it any easier either.

Ufa were down two goals in the first quarter as they met Davos, but then got back in the game to justify their spot in KHL play off zone. Three consecutive goals saw them make a complete comeback, but Davos got back to end their momentum and to force a penalty shootout. Ufa did the penalties better and secured a spot in Spengler Cup final.

Ufa were the most motivated of the three KHL teams that participated in the tournament. Medvescak didn't have enough power, while Jokerit might have been saving their energy for KHL, we just don't know to what extent. Ufa will try and do their best today to win the tournament that will get them media attention all over the world, which is never a bad thing. They played yesterday afternoon, which is good since it gave them more time to recuperate compared to Servetten, who went straight to bed after the drama against Canada and will have almost no time to prepare for the final.

Servette had a 5-0 lead against Team Canada yesterday but not even that kind of goal-difference was enough for a cruise towards the win. They opened the game fiercely, took a 5-0 lead by half time, but then allowed Canada to score 4 straight goals. Loeffel then netted the key goal for Servetten to leave Canada two goals short. The Canadians soon scored another to get only one goal down but couldn't do more and lost 6-5 in the end.

They won the game on account of good offense performance, which was not the case in their previous games here. Servette have to be much more cautious against Ufa today since the opponents will know how to take advantage of any kind of loss of focus.

- I'm proud, I'm very proud with the guys, but that was one of the craziest games I saw. To knock out a team like Canada is not easy, but we reached the final for the second consecutive year and that makes us happy - coach McSorley said.

Schwenderer was on the goal yesterday, but Bays is set to return to goal-tending today. Schwenderer conceded 5 goals yesterday and it's not easy two play two back-to-back games. Goalies will be one of the key aspects of the final game. Both teams had great performances here and making any kind of predictions has already proved tough at this tournament. The only thing we should hope for is great hockey.
