Pittsburgh - Baltimore (17:30)

Steelers opening playoff without one of their best players

  • Published:

Leaving out the last duel (Steelers 47-23), these teams usually played low-productivity matches, especially in Pittsburgh. Since 2008, the Ravens averaged just 18.4 in Heinz Field, and at the same time they kept the Steelers down to 20.4 points in those seven games.

Despite a shaky start, the Pittsburgh Steelers got to the top of NFC North division, and reached the top thanks to great performances in the second part of the season, finishing it off with a win against the Bengals last week. That also secured them the home field advantage, which means a lot, especially in the playoff, where details often decide the winner.

- I think we're getting better with each passing week. The guys are playing very well and doing their jobs. We're getting a contribution from everyone- said Ben Roethlisberger, who has a 10-4 playoff score, and took the Steelers to the very top twice.

This season Big Ben set his career records in passing for touchdowns (32), percentage of completed passes (67.1), and passing yards won (309.5 yards per game). Antonio Brown became his prime target, and ended the regular season as the best on the team in catches (129) and yards won (1698). He became etched in the memory of the guys from Emerald City when he caught 11 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown in their last duel.

- We made a few mistakes, reacted poorly a few times. We don't want to make the same mistakes twice. We've been playing well across the entire field in the past few games, and confidence is high, which should help- said away team's cornerback, Rashaan Melvin.

The Steelers had fantastic offense throughout most of the season (27.3 points per game), and the main reason for that was Le'Veon Bell, who won 2215 yards combined through catches and rushes, scoring 11 touchdowns along the way. However, he injured his knee against the Bengals, and will miss tonight's game. It's almost impossible to convey how much his absence weakens the Steelers' offense, as they used his whenever possible, and the ironic part is that they fired LeGarrette Blount a few weeks ago, as he was unhappy with the amount of time he got. This means Josh Harris will be very busy tonight, and will be subbed for by newly arrived Ben Tate, for whom the Steelers are the third team he's been in this season, and rookie Dri Archer.

If the offense fails to deliver, which is likely, defense will be under a lot of pressure, and since they're not even close to what they were past season, they might crack.

To make things worse, their worst rivals are arriving to Heinz Field, and the Baltimore Ravens would almost trade an appearance in the Superbowl for a victory here tonight. John Harbaugh's team managed to get their sixth playoff appearance in seven years with a lot of luck, and will be playing away all their games on their way to the final.

- All we have to do is win our games. I believe we're a great away team, and sometimes you have to take the hard way to the goal. We're all at 0-0 now, it's a new season- said outer linebacker Terrell Suggs.

In order to have a realistic shot at winning, the Ravens will need more out of their quarterback Joe Flacco, who had only one 300+ yards game since the ninth week, but still ended the season with a career high 3986 yards won by passing.

- Once you're in the playoff anything can happen, but we don't want to look at it that way. I would not be surprised if we are still in there in three weeks- said the Ravens QB.

The away team's defense will be reinforced by Haloti Ngata, who missed four games for using illegal substances. His presence will make it even harder for Steelers to play rushing and give Big Ben problems. In his last duel against the Ravens he had six touchdown passes, but the absence of Bell completely changes the balance of power in the field.

The Ravens lost their last three away matches in Heinz Field, at least in the playoff, but tonight they have reason for optimism, as the Steelers are missing one of their most dangerous players.

- It's a big challenge. We're playing yet another game there, and we'd like to win one- said coach Harbaugh.

Leaving out the last duel (Steelers 47-23), these teams usually played low scoring matches, especially in Pittsburgh. Since 2008, the Ravens averaged just 18.4 in Heinz Field, and at the same time they kept the Steelers down to 20.4 points in those seven games.

Although playoffs are very tough to predict, it seems to me that the away team are rather underestimated here. I admit the Ravens did not look too good in the final part of the season despite the fact they often won, but that is of little importance for this match. I'm quite convinced they're stronger than the Steelers defensively, and since the home team will be missing their top running back, I would hazard to say that the away team are just as strong offensively. In my opinion Le'Veon Bell's injury significantly changes the balance of power here, although I did not see the Steelers as favorites to start with, regardless of the home ground advantage. Bell was in play in practically every down, especially since they let Blount go, and his absence simply must be felt. To those not familiar with the sport, it's practically as if Barcelona went to a derby against Real without Messi. Big Ben is a great quarterback, no doubt about it, and has had a great season, but his great numbers are mostly due to Le'Veon Bell's performance. When I consider it all together, this is at least a 50-50 game in my opinion (though I believe the away team will win), and in 11 of their last 13 duels the Baltimore guys won or got away with a defeat at under 4 points.
