Unicaja having injury struggles

  • Published:

Plaza can't count on Markovic and Green, while Granger and Vasquez had problems with injuries as well, which will cause a lot of changes in home team's lineup

Unicaja played a great games with Barcelona over the weekend. The score was 114-110, which is something you don't get to see often in Europe, not even after the overtime. It was a great in regulation time that could have easily finished with either team winning. Unicaja's coach Plaza concluded the same after the match:

- I can't be unhappy when my team loses to Barcelona away, but I am sorry because we had a great chance and played a great game. At least the spectators enjoyed it.

Plaza is normally not the kind of a coach too concerned with the spectators enjoying or not. He's the pragmatic type who values wins more than anything else, which is why I don't expect his team to set off in a crazy fast pace. I expect a lot of muscle work on their part and Plaza should be able to count on Granger helping in it. Granger missed the last game in Barcelona. His defending of home team's point guards might prove to be the key segment of this game.

- Milano are the kind of a team that has two top-quality level at each position. They have former NBA players, the players who participated at Euroleague Final Four, and we definitely have respect for them, especially now when we're hit by injuries this badly.

Fran Vasquez is dealing with some sort of a stomach flu, but should be on the team today, unlike point guard Markovic and power forward Green:

- Injuries are causing us massive problems. I will have to do a great deal of reshuffling today. Stedannson will be at one, Kuzminskas will have to be the shooter, while Vasquez has to take over at four. It's a lot of changes and I don't know how everything will turn out.

The situation is not easy and Unicaja are for a very tough challenge. Power and rhythm will not be their strong suit in breaking the opponents now that the injury list is this long.

Milano have a very tough away game ahead. It's not only tough but important as well, given their position in the table. They are 0-2, not having put up a fight in either of the games so far. After the bad defeat to Novgorod by 20 goals home, Milano went to Greece to meet Olympiacos. The stood up to the home team in the first period (18-13), but one quarter is not enough. They lost the other three 68-39 for the final 81-58 defeat. Only captain Gentile recorded double digits (12p) while the rest of the team did nothing. Olympiacos' defense destroyed them, while Milano's offense doesn't seem to be doing good, despite having top-quality players such as Gentile, Brooks, and Kleiz at their disposal.

The championship win over Pistoia that followed helped with the atmosphere a bit. Not everything went smoothly in that game, with Milano seeming surprised by Pistoia's good game. The home team even took a 10-point lead at one point, but Milano managed to take control again to record a 79-73 win. Gentile scored team-best 25 points (7-for-12) and added 9 rebounds, while Ragland finished with 19.

Moose's absence saw Gentile and Brook start the game together for the first time this season. Good news is, Moos is back and will be at Banchi's disposal today. It's a very good defense player and Milano don't really have a proper substitute for him.

- We are playing the top table team in Spain, but just like us, they are looking to record their first Top 16 win. They're a compete team, with talent and athleticism, and assertiveness in defense. Playing at their arena is tough. Fierceness, balance, and cohesion will be the key aspects of such a demanding game - Banchi said.
