Galatasaray - Olympiacos (79:74)

The decimated Turkish side need a win for a Top 16 spot

  • Published:

Aradori and centers Aldemir, Vougioukas and Jawai already left the team. Galatasaray lost 5 out of the last 6 games and now play the most important 40 minutes of the season as they meet Olympiacos, who already secured top spot in the group

Everything will come down to these 40 minutes for Galatasaray, who need a win to advance to Euroleague Top 16 if Neptunas don't stun Valencia in Spain. Any other outcome is not good for Ataman's team. The fact Olympiacos already secured top spot in the group, which makes this game completely irrelevant for them is good for the Turks. But, the never-ending rivalry between the Turks and the Greeks will make Olympiacos very motivated to do well here.

Galatasaray will need to play their best game this season, which doesn't seem like an easy task, given their performances over the past few weeks.

They lost 5 out of the last 6 games, both in the Turkish league and Euroleague, home and away. The tough financial situation and discontent by some players don't make things any better.

Galatasaray were defeated to Telekom and Trabzon in the Turkish championship (both teams out of the playoff zone), to Neptunas in Euroleague by 10 points last week, to Laboral Kutxa in the last home game. They need to perform a small miracle today or play Eurocup for the rest of the season.

Aradori and centers Aldemir, Vougioukas, and Jawai already left the team and only Patrick Young joined so far to take over the center position, together with Galatasaray's veteran Gonlum. Erceg is there to help as well, but he never really liked playing in the key.

Galatasaray's defense stepped up last week against Trabzon, but Olympiacos call for the best defense performance this season. Pocius and Micov need to start doing better and get back in shape after recovering from injuries. Ataman would create tactical plans for opponents' point guard in the previous seasons and we need to wait and see what he will come up with for Spanoulis, who will probably be guarded by Guler in attempt to give Arroyo a break. But Arroyo thrives on these kind of games and will defitneily do his very best.

Olympiacos opened the group stage of this season's Euroleague brilliantly and kept the good game going to secure top spot in the group last week when they beat Crvena Zvezda. They didn't record a win only in Vitoria and this game is not relevant for them result-wise. It doesn't matter if they win or lose by 1 or 20 points, but Turkish team, especially Galatasaray, provide the Greeks with a lot of motivation.

Olympiacos have only one more game to do after this one - the great Greek derby match with Panathinakos, which they need to win to stay in the race for the best spot ahead of the playoffs. Olympiacos beat Panonios easily on Monday, playing particularly good defense to limit the opponent to only 17 points in the first 20 minutes. The offense wasn't doing as brilliantly which meant the defense had to step up in order for them to win easily in the end.

- We knew it would be a tough task since Panonios acquired some new players. They had trouble scoring from the start so we increased the point-difference as the game advanced. We were focused the whole time, except in the opening of the last quarter when we missed some shots - Sferopolous said and added:

- We're slowly getting where we want to be. We always need to do well and try hard. The defense is generally doing well, but the offense depends on the mood of the day. We had 24 assists, which is good as it proves we're on the right track.

The first game with Galatasaray was one of best defense performances Olympiacos had in Euroleague this season. The Turks could not cope with the pressure which is becoming Olympiacos' greatest weapon. They will try and use it today to record a win. Olympicaos limited them to 67 and 54 points last season.

- The game is not relevant result-wise, but it's definitely important. We want to keep the good games going and keep on making progress - Sferopulous said and Lafayette added:

- This is the last game of the first Euroleague stage and we already secured top spot. But it doesn't mean anything. We want to play a good game in Turkey and stay cautious the entire 40 minutes. Everything will start with defense, as it always does.

Olympiacos can't count on Printezis, Papapetrou, and Mantzaris.

For Galatasaray everything stops in these 40 minutes; they have to win this and hope that Neptunas will be defeated in Spain. It's true they mainly went over this margin so far in this part of the competition, but with a couple of players leaving they have a very narrow rotation and they can win this only with a good defense. They made a step forward against Trabzon, played a match at 142 points, but still lost in the end... They played with only seven players. They will rely on them again today, and there should be no rushing around. They didn't have offense solutions against Olympiacos this nor last season, they have a hard time coping with the pressure of the Greek team and in all three head-to-head matches they remained at 67 points or less... This margin may be under the influence of the fact that for Olympiacos this match doesn't mean much, but they will go for the maximum. The Turkish-Greek rivalry is huge, and besides that, this is their final match and check before the big Greek derby against Panathinaikos in ten days. Last week's match against Zvezda also had no greater meaning, it was a brotherly duel which ended on 123 points... Sferopoulos put the most pressure on the defense since his arrival. Olympiacos look more impressive in that part, and in today's match preview they also point out that is going to be their starting point. On Monday they pushed Panioios on 17 points in the first part, and played a match of 130 points... On the other hand, their offense struggles in away matches, not once did they score over 82 points in 40 minutes. The first head-to-head ended at 159 points, but was determined long before the end. I think today we'll see a match similar to the ones from previous season, which ended at 126 and 145 points...
