A battle for the third spot

  • Published:

Should they win today, the Cavs will replace the Bulls at third position in the East, and they've got cause for optimism, having won both previous duels this season

After a crisis period, the Chicago Bulls took advantage of a somewhat favorable schedule to stabilize and get the third spot in Eastern Conference, but the Ohio team are right behind them by half a win, with the Wizards and Bucks not far behind either. Tom Thibodeau's squad won their third game in a row on Tuesday, beating the Kings at home 104-86.

The Bulls controlled the match most of the time and had an 84-64 lead in the last period, and though the away team got within 13 points the Bulls were never in danger of losing.

- We've still got a long way to go, and everyone needs to be on the same page, improving with each new game, win or lose. We're taking it one game at a time- said Derrick Rose, who totaled 23 points (10/17) and seven assists.

Their most efficient player was the reborn Pau Gasol, with 26 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists. The Spaniard scored 32 double-double performances with the Bulls, including 13 in a row, and is now nine away from tying his career best (2010-2011 season).

- I'm playing the right way, fighting, trying to do whatever it takes for us to win. I think I'm performing at a high level and I want to continue doing so- said the power forward of the Bulls, who have a 23-6 score when he makes at least half of his shots.

Tony Snell played his career best on Tuesday, scoring 24 points with great 9/11 shooting from the field, including 4/6 for three points. Over his last ten games he averages 11.2 points with 50.6 percent shooting, after previously averaging just 2.4 points with 36.4% shooting from the field.

- I've been through this last year, this is not new to me. You never know when you'll have to step up, and it's up to me to be ready when that happens- says Snell.

He could once again have a bigger role tonight as Kirk Hinrich will likely miss his third game in a row, and the Bulls' top scorer Jimmy Butler (20.4) might be out as well, since he injured his shoulder against the Kings and sat out the second half.

Bulls have a 3-1 score with Butler off the court this season, and the loss was against the Cavaliers, who arrive to United Center in phenomenal form. They won 14 of their 15 games since January 15th, which is the best in the league, at least during that period. Last night they crushed the Heat at home 113-93, with yet another great performance by LeBron James, who scored 18 points (6/16), ten rebounds and seven assists against his former team.

- I'll always have fond memories when I see my guys, any of the teammates I won the title with or lost it, as we've been through a lot together. At the same time, we're trying to create something here and be better, we don't want to miss any chances- said the best player in the world today, who averaged 31.7 points in his last 17 games in Chicago.

James will have to pull hard once again if Kevin Love misses the game. He got hit in the eye in the third quarter and left the court afterwards, not returning later.

- It's OK, we'll see tomorrow. I got a strong hit from Chalmers, my vision was blurry for 20-30 minutes but it's back to normal now, so it's all right. I don't know how serious it is, but the eye did not react well in the first hour, so we'll see tomorrow- said the Cavs power forward. They've been limiting their opponents to just 93.9 points over their last 13 games, which is quite an improvement from their previous 100.7 points allowed on average, with 47.2% shooting.

The Cavs won both their previous duels with the Bulls this season, and the 108-94 victory a month ago carries more weight as both teams had similar rosters to the ones they have today. The possible absence of Butler on one side or Love on the other changes things drastically, so one should wait for the shooting practice for more info on their status.
