Memphis - New Orleans (110:74)

Pelicans do quite well against the team from Elvis's city

  • Published:

New Orleans boys won six out of the last eight head-to-heads, including two out of three this season, and considering the hosts aren't in some excellent shape and are troubled by injuries, it shouldn't be surprising in case Pelicans win again

Although since February 25th the boys had a very modest 11-11 record, the Memphis Grizzlies are still the third team of the West Conference, and they're only one win away from the second-placed Rockets, with whom they're also fighting for the division title. They will have to snap out of it if they want to prevent going down the table:

- We'll continue to do what we usually do. We have to keep a better eye on the ball. In the last couple of days we've been working on what we're missing or what became a problem in the last five, six weeks. Before us is an important match in which we have to be ready to fight - said coach David Joerger.

On Saturday the Grizzlies were defeated for the fourth time in the last six matches, when the weakened Wizards defeated them with 92-83. Since the start it didn't go well for David Joerger's team who conceded in the first half 29 points, and although they tightened their defense in the second half, they didn't manage to pull off a win because of a very weak offense.

- Obviously it was a tough match because we also played the night before. I think they were stronger than us, but we fought, especially in the second half. We had too many turnovers and we missed a lot of shots. It's hard to win a match in which your three-pointer is 1-for-15 - commented coach Joerger whose team scores only 86.3 points in the last four defeats.

One of the players who was in the mood was Marc Gasol who scored 18 points (7-for-13) and 11 rebounds, and next to him the only two-digit shot was Mike Conley with 14 points (5-for-15). Zack Randolph remained at only six points (3-for-5).

Except for the match, the Grizzlies lost Jeff Green who had to leave the match in the second half because of back cramps, and he didn't return after that. So far there is no information about his status, and in case he doesn't play, (too) many minutes will be given to veteran Vince Carter, since probably Tony Allen also won't play; he missed the last four matches because of problems with his hamstring.

Memphis boys don't have too many space to relax since tonight they're hosting New Orleans Pelicans who are trying to get into their first playoffs since 2011. They took the destiny into their own hands last night when they beat Warriors (103-100) and by Spurs defeating Thunder, and they also have the tiebreaker above the OKC team.

- We don't think of this as a great win. We think of this as a good win. We know we're a good team. We have to see ourselves like that before others start paying attention to us. I think we made a huge step before a tough match we're up for on Wednesday - said Anthony Davis who scored 23 out of his 29 points (10-for-21) in the second half, next to 10 rebounds and four blocks.

After today's match the Pelicans will play against the Suns who are still in the fight for the eighth place thanks to maths. Then they're up for duels against the Rockets, Wolves and Spurs. The good news for them is that against those teams their record this season is 10-4.

- We want to continue to progress and build this. We want to continue collecting wins and make it to the playoffs - said Ryan Anderson who last night scored 12 points (5-for-15) and nine rebounds.

The Pelicans can build their optimism on the fact that they won six out of the last eight head-to-heads against the Memphis Boys who outplayed them in November with 93-81. But, Davis and others won in the following two meetings played in New Orleans (106-95, 95-89).
