The Rockets are doing well even without Howard

  • Published:

The Cavs arrived to Houston with both Irving (shoulder) and James (back) slightly injured and in question for the game tonight, but there is a real chance both will play

Although their style might not be too pleasing to the eye, the Houston Rockets score more than well. If they keep shooting three-pointers in the same rhythm they're on track to take down a couple of records in the NBA, including those for number of 3-point attempts and 3-pointers made, and a look at their ranking proves the tactic is paying off. They're currently third in the Western despite having Dwight Howard away for 26 games, and some other players injured as well.

The Rockets won their fourth game in a row last Friday, making a comeback against the Nets at home for a 102-98 final victory. The Nets held a +5 lead (95-90) with two and a half minutes to go in the game, but the Rockets won the rest of the match 12-3.

-The beauty of this team is in how great they handle problems, and this was another proof of that. We stayed relaxed and did the right things when we needed it most- said James Harden, who scored just 15 points (4/15), probably due to the right ankle injury sustained two nights before, but he had 12 assists instead.

It was Terrence Jones who carried the team this time, as he scored 26 points (11/16) 12 rebounds and one block in his 11th game after an almost 3 month break.

-He scored some rebound baskets, and did well in actions around the rim. He's looking good, and we definitely needed such a performance from him tonight- said coach McHale, praising his player, while Jones added:

-I still feel some problems from time to time, but I'm feeling very well on court. I'm trying to bring in some energy and I think it helps the team a lot.

The Rockets will need more of his good games since Dwight Howard's recovery is not in sight, and though they're doing rather well without him, they'd certainly like to have him back as soon as possible to tune in the team for the playoff. On the other hand, there is no point in pushing his comeback before his trouble-prone knee fully heals, though it's currently very doubtful whether that will happen without surgery, which he will probably have to undergo after the season ends.

Tonight the Toyota Center will welcome the Cleveland Cavaliers, who lost just 3 of their last 21 game. David Blatt's team put together a 4 game winning streak after the All-Star break in which they won by an average of 19.0 points, but on Friday they decided to rest Kyrie Irving and LeBron James, which cost them a 93-86 defeat against the Pacers.

Even without two of their starter players, one of which is the best player on the planet right now, the Cavs started off furiously. After a few minutes they held a 21-8 lead, but as the time went on the Pacers slowly took control of the game. At the end of the third period they took off to a 74-59 lead, and the Cavs only managed to save face in the rest of the match.

-In a match such as this one, with Kyrie and LeBron missing, we had to take open shots from the top of the key, as we lacked the penetration we usually have. We needed to make them too, but unfortunately didn't- said coach Blatt, whose team made 35.9% of their field attempts (9/31 three pointers).

Their most efficient player was J.R. Smith with 21 points (7/17), with Kevin Love right behind him with another 17 points (6/19) and ten rebounds. The only point guard left to the Cavs was Matthew Dellavedova (14+10+5), who did a very good job, but he simply lacks the athleticism and creativity of Irving to keep the offense as fluent as it usually is, and too much depended on him.

It's so far unclear if Irving will play tonight, and the same goes for LeBron James, who was expected to appear in Indianapolis up to an hour and a half before the match when coach Blatt told the press he will rest his best player due to back problems. James missed 11 games this season, nine of which because of back problems, and was not even on the bench this Friday.

-As you could see, he had some back problems on Thursday, so I decided to rest him- said coach Blatt, adding that he's hoping to get two of his best players to play on Sunday.
