L.A. Lakers - Chicago (123:118)

The Lakers' coach: We're going through a difficult period

  • Published:

The LA team are on a nine game losing streak, scoring just 88.9 points on average in those, and can hardly expect much against the Bulls, who've beaten them in six of the last seven head-to-head matches

The Los Angeles Lakers have definitely seen better days. After a terrible last season marked by many injuries, they hoped for a better run this season, but it soon became clear that they're sentenced to another bottom-feeding season. They lost Steve Nash in preseason, and their most talented player too, Julius Randel, in the first game. Stubborn Kobe Bryant tried to drag the team to playoff alone, but it quickly became clear that that isn't going to happen as injuries started plaguing him again, forcing him to miss games. What everyone feared happened last Wednesday, when the Lakers' star player injured his right shoulder, which means he'll miss the rest of the season.

The Lakers suffered their ninth defeat in a row on Tuesday, losing 98-82 to Wizards at home. It seemed that Byron Scott's team could get a surprise win, as they held a 19 point lead midway through the second period, but the away team slowly chipped away at their lead and won the game in the finish. This ended the Lakers' streak of 33 consecutive victories in matches where they had at least a 19 point lead.

- We have to remain calm. We're aware that we're going through a tough period, the water's up to our neck, but we have to keep swimming, things will get better. The Lakers will once again be a championship team one day- said coach Scott, whose team is on the longest losing streak since the 1993/94 season.

One of the rare bright spots was Wayne Ellington, who exploded scoring 28 points (12/20) in his best performance this season, adding three rebounds, assists and steals as well.

- I decided to go out and be aggressive, we're a team that has to be hungry- said the Lakers shooting guard, who's been averaging 16.0 points and 54.2% shooting over his last four games, which is a huge leap from 7.3 and 44.3% he had in the first 33 games.

The Lakers have averaged a measly 88.9 points per game during their negative series and tonight they might be deprived of one of their top players, Nick Young, who missed the Wizards game due to ankle issues, and since he did not attend practice yesterday his appearance in this match is questionable at best.

The Chicago Bulls, who've been less then impressive themselves over the past month, will try to take advantage of the problems Lakers have had. They opened their six game away tour with a great victory in Oakland, ending the Warriors' 19 game home winning streak with a 113-111 victory after an extra five minutes.

-Anyone would get momentum and the feeling you can beat anyone after you win in such a way- said Derrick Rose, who scored 30 points (13/33) but also had 11 turnovers.

Pau Gasol played a very solid part in the third win out of their last four games for the Bulls, scoring 18 points (7/12) with 16 rebounds and eight assists. Joakim Noah also did well, with 18 points (7/12), 15 rebounds and six assists. The two of them also take the most credit for limiting one of the best offenses in the league to just 42.5% shooting from the field with utter domination in the rebounds segment (61-48).

-I think we have a fighting team that never gives up, you don't choose to play like this. This is something to pay attention to- says Gasol, who is currently averaging 18.3 points and 11.9 rebounds.

The Bulls won even without their leading scorer Jimmy Butler (20.1), who could miss the Lakers game too due to illness. His team beat the Lakers in six of the last seven games they played, including three in a row. Gasol met his former team on Christmas for the first time, when he led the Bulls to a 113-93 victory with a 23 point and 13 rebounds performance-

- It's obviously an emotional game playing against the team you spent so much time in- said the brilliant Spaniard, who won two titles with the Lakers.
