Houston - Miami (115:79)

The Rockets coming from their worst game of the season

  • Published:

Neither team are in great shape lately, and this primarily goes for Miami, who lost six of their last eight games

The Houston Rockets managed to play better with half their roster gone than now, when they have practically all their players healthy. The arrival of Smith, Brewer and Shved obviously messed up the chemistry of the Houston team, as they lost four of their last eight games and dropped down to fifth position in the Western conference. Kevin McHale's guys played what was perhaps their worst game this season in New Orleans last night, and were demolished 111-83.

The Rockets were 15 points behind by halftime, and when they started the third quarter with several mistakes, coach McHale benched his starters after just a minute and a half, clearly showing he will not tolerate such gameplay. None of the starters scored during that third period, and since the Pelicans took of to a 32 point lead the bench players covered almost the entire second half.

-We showed zero commitment, no focus at all. This was terrible. They came out and kicked our asses. It's obvious that we did not come here to play basketball after we missed nine layups in the first quarter alone. We were very bad- said coach McHale after the first game all season in which his team never held the lead.

The Rockets made just 39.8% of their shots from the field, including just 6/29 for three points, with 19 turnovers at the same time. Coupled with poor defending, this could not turn out good for them.

-We have to find a way to keep the energy alive throughout the game. We can't be negative when we mess up something, as all that negativity makes the situation even more difficult, so we have to stay positive. We just have to prepare for the next game- said Dwight Howard, who averages just 12 points and 6 rebounds in his last three games.

Since none of the starters got more than 26 minutes last night, the Rockets should have plenty of energy to play their signature game, especially on defense, which has been the basis of their success for the better part of this season.

Since they were supposed to end 2014 with seven consecutive home games and a final away match against Indiana, the Miami Heat leadership and players probably expected and hoped for a much better score than the one they achieved in the end. However, Eric Spoelstra's team utterly failed, having won just two of their last eight games and dropping to eight place in the conference.

After beating LeBron James and his Cavs with a great performance at home, Wade and the guys were a disappointment in the next three, losing them all. After close home defeats against Memphis and Orlando, the Pacers were also stronger than Miami on New Year's Eve, although the halftime score indicated things would end differently.

Miami managed to build up a 51-42 lead with a very good first half, and get that up to +10 points with a very good start in the third quarter. However, like many times before, Heat totally lost it in the second half of the third period and allowed the Pacers to turn the game around with a 17-2 run, a series Wade and the team could not recover from till the end.

- The third quarter has been our weakness all season long. We played very well in the first half, parried them at the start of the second, but then the completely took over- said Wade, while coach Spoelstra added:

- Our defeats throughout the past month were all due to periods of about eight minutes when we completely lost control of the game. We have to find a way to correct that.

Miami ended the game with 49.4% shooting, and were led by Wade with 20 (9/20) points and seven assists, while Bosh added 18 (7/14) points and eight rebounds.

Since they're in an unpleasant series after three consecutive defeats, Miami Heat are certainly not thrilled by the fact they'll be playing six of their next seven games away, first of which against Houston tonight.

- I don't believe in moral victories, you either won or lost. We have to start winning, since we can't even think of the playoff if we don't- said Wade.
