Sacramento - L.A. Lakers (108:101)

The Kings looking for their first victory under new leadership

  • Published:

The Lakers beat the Kings in six of their last seven duels. Bryant was missing in five of those, and seemed a bit tired in the last game he played, against Thunder

When they lost Cousins over three weeks ago due to illness, it was clear that the Kings were in for a rough ride till their best player recovers. His recovery took some time unfortunately, and the Kings had to play 10 matches without their center, losing eight. The casualty for that was coach Malone, who was replaced by Corbin, listed as a temporary solution. Although a change of coaches usually brings a positive shock, Sacramento did not experience one. Under their new leadership, the Kings lost their first game to Oklahoma, and then the next one to Bucks, despite Cousins coming back in that game.

Although Cousins' return gave them domination under the rim, proven by them outscoring the Bucks 48-26 from the paint, the Kings struggled to defend their perimeter. This resulted in Bucks making 13 three point shots, 10 of those in the first half, which forced Corbin to change his setup. By fielding a smaller  lineup the Kings were able to defend the perimeter much better in the second half, but at the cost of 21 turnovers, leading to 17 points by the Bucks.

- They made 13 three point shots in the end, while they had about 75% three pointers made in the first half. We parried them much better in the second half, but they surprised us at the start. We had to lower our lineup and adjust- commented Corbin.
The fact Cousins had a great comeback match did not help the Kings in the end. He ended the match at 27 points (8/12) and 11 rebounds, missing a shot for the victory, while great performances were also seen by McLemore with 22 (8/10) and Gay with 20 (9/15) points and nine rebounds.

Since their defeat against the Bucks occurred back on Thursday night, the Kings had plenty of time to rest and prepare to face the Lakers, who beat them at the Staples 10 days ago led by Bryant (32pts) and started their five loss streak. The last two came under their new coach, Corbin, who is trying to speed up the tempo of his team's game.

- It's been a tough week for the entire team. We have to clear our heads and try to give it our best shot- added the Kings coach.

After ending their three game losing streak with three consecutive victories, the LA Lakers are back in a negative series once again. After a decisive away defeat at Indiana ended their winning streak, the OKC Thunder were also better than Bryant and the crew on Friday night.

In a game where the away Thunder were missing Durant, the Lakers were behind by two points at halftime, but this grew to nine at the end of the third quarter with 73-82. However, coach Scott's team played very well in the final 12 minutes and things might have turned out differently if Bryant made the shot for the win, or had a better night all around.

In a match where the Lakers had a decent shooting percentage of 48.2%, Bryant ended up with just nine points (3/15) and eight assists and rebounds each.

- I just did not feel my legs tonight, it was frustrating. I already had that happen to me in some earlier matches. I'll have to start doing something else to get the rest I need -commented Bryant, with coach Scot also voicing his thoughts:

- It's just fatigue building up. I assumed this might happen after the Wednesday practice session. He went full throttle in practice to motivate his teammates, but that might have cost us in the end.

Apart from Bryant failing in the scoring department, after just 13 minutes on court the Lakers also lost Young, who had scored 11 points up to that moment. He got ejected after Adams provoked him. The one to get the best out of the whole situation for the Lakers was Davis, with 18 points (8/10), while Price (5/8) and Boozer (6/12) both added another 14.

After a close home defeat against Oklahoma, the Lakers will face the Kings tonight, a team they beat in six of their last seven duels. Although Bryant was missing in five of those won games, to succeed today they'll need a good performance by Kobe. The Lakers will also need to solidify their defense, which might struggle against Cousins, while Gay also did well against the LA team, averaging 28.7 points in their last three duels.
