UNICS Kazan - Real Madrid (75:76)

Pedoulakis: Playing against them will be very difficult

  • Published:

Real are on a nine game winning streak, and though they are not as impressive as last season, they are undefeated in all competition. Kazan are struggling, as proved by just +15 in the three victories recorded in the VTB league (all at home and against the weaker Avtodor, Bisons and Zenit)

Although they have a very good score so far this season, UNICS are unimpressive in terms of performances. They scraped through in some of their matches, with VTB underdogs such as Avtodor and Bisons, and even Zenit, getting them against the wall, which all had to even up somewhere. UNICS came back empty-handed from a tough away match in Turkey, completely outplayed by Efes, with the final score nowhere near the real situation on the court as UNICS managed to climb back to -4 only in the final seconds, after losing by up to 16.

The weekend brought us another thriller finish in the VTB league. Zenit were a threat to the very end, while UNICS managed to keep their perfect score in the competition with a third home victory by +7. It's clear that the team are diminishing in form, as they had to time their form to the qualifying tournament in Belgium, thus peaking earlier than others, but Pedoulakis will have to find a way to get his team quickly back into their true rhythm. The coming days bring them three very important home matches, against Real and Sassari in the Euroleague, and against Lokomotiv from Krasnodar in the VTB league. The match against the Italians is perhaps the most important of those, as it's pretty realistic to expect that UNICS will go into the match with his direct competition for the next stage with a 0-2 score.

- Real Madrid are a great team, they've got excellent players and most of them have been together for a long time, which makes them even stronger. They play very quickly and the quality roster allows them to keep up the high tempo throughout the game. It will be very difficult playing against them, we'll have to be fully focused and give it all we've got in order to win the game- said Pedoulakis, aware of the difficulty of their task today.

The first condition for UNICS to parry Real here is to stop their transition and offensive potential of the Madrid team, not allowing them to get into their rhythm. If they don't achieve that, the Spanish will be impossible to stop. It's hard to deal with Real in a match with 80-90 points on each side, and the tall guys of the home team can expect a major battle considering the quality of players Real have under the rim.

- Definitely a big match, Real are both one of the favorites for the title and one of the best teams in the competition. We'll try to stay competitive as long as possible- added Nikos Zisis.

Although they put together their team rather late due to the WC and later arrival of Gustavo Ayon, Real are arriving to Russia without having lost a game, not only in the Euroleague, where they've played only one; they're undefeated overall. If we consider the moment they completed the roster as the starting point, Laso's players lined up nine victories since (three preparatory matches, two in the Supercup). This is not the Real from last season, who won by 20-30 or more points, but they are still winning. Last week they struggled against Žalgiris, losing for almost three periods. They did even worse against Joventut, where their defense did not do much, but they still managed to come back in a match where they were losing 76-67 after 35 minutes. It took them just four minutes to put together a 21-5 series, with KC Rivers scoring all of his 15 points in the last quarter (5 three-pointers). When the scoreboard showed 88-81 after 39 minutes, everyone was slowly getting ready to leave the Palacio de Deportes in Madrid, but Joventut had other plans. They managed to come back to 88-88 with 9 seconds to go, but this only allowed Felipe Reyes to be the hero in his 600th ACB league game.

- We have to be ready for Kazanj, as they're capable of scoring a lot with the talent they have, despite playing strong defense. We're familiar with Jerrells and Langford of Milan, James White is a solid player, Kaimakoglou was a starter in Greece, D'or Fisher played for us, they also have Zisis, Sanikidze... Overall, a team definitely worthy of the Euroleague and one of the really tough away matches of the group- warned coach Laso.

- It's a very long trip and it also coincides with our away match on Tenerife (Canarias on Sunday, author's note). They showed they never give up against Efes, managing to come back after the game seemed to be over when they were behind by 18. We have a lot of areas where we can improve.

The Russian team will on paper be an even bigger challenge than Žalgiris or Joventut, who gave Real a lot of trouble. Laso has all his players ready, he did not reveal who will be staying off the bench this time. It was Mejri against Žalgiris.

- We've been together for only 3-4 matches, we're still getting accustomed to one another, which is not an easy process and it will take us some time to reach our peak as a team. We are slowly improving and winning, which is the most important thing- added Rivers.

It will be intriguing to see the clashes of Llull and Sergio Rodriguez against Jerrells, as well as Rudy Fernandez against Langford, but on an overall level, and having in mind the previous matches they played this season, Kazan are still a class below here.

Kazan have not not playing well for a very long time now, not only the last few days. Efes beat them easily in Istanbul and their VTB league performances are not convincing. They're struggling with much weaker teams and when playing qualifying matches in Belgium, had to make comebacks in virtually every game. Granted, that proves character but their unconvincing defense game won't work against Real. We got used to Pedoulakis' very tough defense at Panathinaikos, but his players here are different than Panathinaikos'. He has Langford and Jerrells, two offense oriented players, at his disposal here. That is preventing Pedoulakis to put his defense plan in action the way he wants it. Real have had a few strange games home, but their defense can stop Kazan. This is the toughest challenge for Real since the Valencia and Barcelona games (Supercup). They won both of those, by 13 and 21 point and following poorer performances with Joventut and Zalgiris, the team will be keen on doing well today
