Oldenburg's mood dampened by injuries - and a pilots' strike

Because of the strike, the German team had to take the bus instead of the plane. In it there was no back Stuckey who got injured on Saturday. This is Nymburk's fourth game in seven days, and today the offense part should dominate the court

The Eurocup, home league, VTB league and now the Eurocup again. Three different competitions, four matches in seven days. That's the life of the Czech champion Nymburk. They don't have it easy, but they get what they asked for. They lost by a thread in an away match against Nancy, but Svitavy and Saratov dealt with it in a positive way for them.

In Svitavy they were without their best players. Coach Kestutis Kemzura saved them for a match in the VTB league, and that showed to be a smart move. They beat Svitavy even with reserve players with almost no difficulty, and then they've trampled the Russians with their offense. The first quarter didn't go as was expected; they were losing with four points of difference, but up until half-time they've turned around the score in their favor. They started to pitch out from the 25th minute. They had a great advantage of +19 in 37th minute (92-73), but in the end they relaxed and received seven points in the last minute without scoring a single one.


- The match was difficult, as we expected it to be. Although Avtodor don't have big names in the draw, they played on a high level. We weren't very effective in the pick'n'roll defense in the first half-time, but we made some adjustments later on. We managed to take over, we did our rebound job better and we were good in the transitional defense. Avtodor still didn't give up and we had to try hard to keep the initiative and win - coach Kemzura commented on the match.


Benda was the best player of the match with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 9/10 shots from the game. Behind him was Washington with 20 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, followed by Rancik with 10 points and Simmons with 14. The last one also played the longest, a total of 36 minutes; the rest were under 30. Some of the strength was saved up for Oldenburg whom Nymburk will be waiting for in Prague. A lucky place, if you ask the people from the Czech club.


- We are returning to the hall where we were doing really well last season in the Eurocup. We played a couple of excellent matches with some of the greatest European teams. I'm not only appealing to our fans, but also to basketball lovers of Prague to come and support us on our way to a new victory - said Kemzura.


His team, not counting the match with Lokomotiva from Kuban, works very well in the offense. That is their trademark in a way, and the width of the team enables them to play on three fronts and not feel too much pressure. It would be even better if Kemura had Burns and Barton available, but they are injured and there is no information about the date of their return.


- Our teams is specific with scoring more points this season. Matches with 60 points are going to be a rarity, we will win the matches with our offense - shooting guard Welsh pointed out.


The away team are not arriving to the Czech Republic in the highest of spirits. Yesterday was dampened by the pilots' strike in Germany so they had to take a 10-hour trip by bus. An additional problem is Maurice Stuckey's injury, and he will surely miss this match. He was injured on Saturday in a clash against Tubingen. That was quite unlucky for Oldenburg because Stuckey slipped and fell, and the wing center Neanja Aleksandrov fell on his knee. He is also feeling the consequences, but might be on the court tonight.


Oldenburg didn't have too much trouble against Tubingen. They were slipping a bit at the halftime, but a good 5 to 6 minutes in the third quarter was enough to take the advantage. Their offense was very good. They scored 98 points with 12 three-pointers, but their defense was below expectations yet again- Artland scored over 90, Sevilla over 85 at the Eurocup opening, and now Tubingen with almost 90.


Center Adam Chubb showed an excellent form in the offense (16 points + 13 rebounds) and will surely be their number one option in today's match. Stuckey's absence means more minutes for Julius Jenkins who was a bit out of shape at the start of the season, and Ricky Paulding is still searching for himself.


- After we've lost the first match in the Eurocup against Sevilla, we want to show a good performance in Prague. This weekend we had a difficult match against Tubingen where we saw that we need more time to find the right pace. It's nice to see my players scoring 98 points, but the defense has to get better. Nymburk are familiar in European basketball, so we will have to focus - coach Sebastian Machowski pointed out.

- We have to fix our game in the defense, while our offense is solid. It's a bummer we will be short of one or two players.
